‘Vauban fortifications’ in <strong>Briançon</strong> and Mont-Dauphin onto the UNESCO World Heritage List in July<br />

Occupying a key position for Alpine commerce, the town has se<strong>en</strong> economic, political and strategic developm<strong>en</strong>t on both a national and international scale.<br />
> Crossroads of commerce and ideas<br />
�e birth of the town can be dated to the first quarter of<br />
the 13th c<strong>en</strong>tury and refer<strong>en</strong>ces to the ‘bourg’. �e<br />
Dauphin sought to stimulate trade in the town by<br />
granting his subjects certain political and economic<br />
concessions. �ese privileges gave <strong>Briançon</strong> commerce an<br />
international dim<strong>en</strong>sion, while the establishm<strong>en</strong>t of the<br />
Papacy in Avignon at the beginning of the 14th c<strong>en</strong>tury<br />
saw increased commercial traffic via the Durance valley.<br />
Merchants came from across France, the Comtat<br />
V<strong>en</strong>aissin (the region around Avignon), Italy, Flanders,<br />
Germany and Spain. �e Great <strong>Briançon</strong> Fair was held in<br />
September and could last up to 15 days.<br />
> A strong religious pres<strong>en</strong>ce<br />
�e rise of the Wald<strong>en</strong>sians in the Middle Ages prompted<br />
the Catholic Church to wage a campaign of evangelism<br />
and repression. �is led to the construction of numerous<br />
religious buildings. A Franciscan monastery was built at<br />
the <strong>en</strong>d of the 14th c<strong>en</strong>tury. Monks played an active role<br />
in the town, building the Chapelle des Pénit<strong>en</strong>ts Noirs in<br />
the 16th c<strong>en</strong>tury.<br />
�e town’s medieval church with its elegant tapering spire<br />
was razed to the ground in the 18th c<strong>en</strong>tury to make way<br />
for the ramparts and a collegiate church was built within<br />
the town walls. A new monastery for the Récollets<br />
(Franciscan) monks, army chaplains, was built in the 18th<br />
c<strong>en</strong>tury and Ursuline nuns took charge of the education<br />
of girls.<br />
> Military life<br />
Located at the foot of the Col du Montg<strong>en</strong>èvre, <strong>Briançon</strong><br />
has be<strong>en</strong> a def<strong>en</strong>ded settlem<strong>en</strong>t since the Gallo-Roman<br />
period. �e kings of France stayed here several times<br />
during the wars with Italy and the arrival of troops in the<br />
town o�<strong>en</strong> le� its inhabitants financially ruined. Its<br />
military pres<strong>en</strong>ce swelled with the construction of<br />
def<strong>en</strong>sive walls in the 18th c<strong>en</strong>tury and there could be as<br />
many as 6000 m<strong>en</strong> garrisoned here in times of conflict.<br />
�e creation of a ‘snow regim<strong>en</strong>t’ at the <strong>en</strong>d of the 19th<br />
c<strong>en</strong>tury had a great effect on <strong>Briançon</strong> life and in 1994<br />
the 159th Régim<strong>en</strong>t d’Infanterie Alpine was replaced by<br />
the C<strong>en</strong>tre National d’Aguerrissem<strong>en</strong>t <strong>en</strong> Montagne.<br />
> �e Industrial Revolution<br />
�e establishm<strong>en</strong>t of a factory in the lower town gave a<br />
huge boost to the economy of the <strong>Briançon</strong> region. �e<br />
Schappe factory processed waste silk and brought the<br />
Industrial Revolution to <strong>Briançon</strong>. It precipitated a<br />
period of great social and economic change and<br />
urbanisation to the town. With this came the birth of the<br />
Quartier Sainte-Catherine as a new middle class c<strong>en</strong>tre<br />
of industry and commerce. �e factory provided<br />
employm<strong>en</strong>t for betwe<strong>en</strong> 700 and 1400 workers for<br />
almost a c<strong>en</strong>tury. �e a�ermath of the First World War<br />
and the arrival of synthetic silk meant the factory was<br />
forced to close its doors for the last time in 1933.<br />
> �e birth of tourism and<br />
the developm<strong>en</strong>t of mountain cures<br />
�e new activity known as tourism spread through the<br />
<strong>Briançon</strong> region in the second half of the 19th c<strong>en</strong>tury.<br />
�anks to the growing popularity of winter and summer<br />
sports and the staging of the world’s first international ski<br />
competition in Montg<strong>en</strong>èvre in 1907, the reputation of<br />
the greater <strong>Briançon</strong> area was attracting increasing<br />
numbers of visitors. As well as tourism, mountain cures<br />
were another source of income and <strong>Briançon</strong>’s dry,<br />
healthy climate and sunshine meant that in July 1914 it<br />
established itself as a ‘health resort’. Yet it was not until<br />
the 1930s and the construction of the sanatoriums that a<br />
true health-promotion policy was put in place.<br />

If you want to find out all about <strong>Briançon</strong>, this is the tour for<br />
you. Stroll through the picturesque streets with one of our<br />
guide-lecturers and learn about the town's rich history and<br />
unusual civic architecture, its religious buildings (the<br />
Collégiale and Franciscan church) and Vauban's fortifications.<br />
> Fort des Salettes<br />
You reach this small redoubt at the <strong>en</strong>d of the 20-minute walk<br />
through woodland. Vauban designed the Salettes as a means<br />
of prev<strong>en</strong>ting the <strong>en</strong>emy from occupying positions<br />
overlooking the town. It was built betwe<strong>en</strong> 1709 and 1712<br />
and was made into a fort under the July Monarchy.<br />
> Fort des Têtes<br />
�e hub of the 18th c<strong>en</strong>tury fortifications, the fort gets its<br />
name from the rocky plateau on which it was built.<br />
It covers an area one and half times the size of the upper town.<br />
Having crossed the heavily def<strong>en</strong>ded bastioned fort, you<br />
explore the buildings that were ess<strong>en</strong>tial for the life of the<br />
garrison.<br />
> �e Sainte-Catherine silk industry<br />
Explore the landscaping of the La Schappe park as well as the<br />
history of an unusual industry devoted to the processing of<br />
waste silk. Silk production employed over 1000 workers for<br />
nearly a c<strong>en</strong>tury, leaving an industrial legacy that is still visible<br />

Cervières<br />
At the foot of the Col d’Izoard is the small and unspoilt village of Cervières with its two<br />
churches, including the church of St Michel that dates �om the 15th c<strong>en</strong>tury. On the<br />
Italian border and right next to the Queyras National Park, this is an auth<strong>en</strong>tic mountain<br />
region where agriculture remains part of everyday life and visitors can see farm animals<br />
while also catching a glimpse of marmots and chamois. Take a journey through time and<br />
visit a family house dating �om the 18th c<strong>en</strong>tury that is now a museum.<br />

Puy Saint André<br />
The commune of Puy Saint André stretches �om the Durance to the summit of La<br />
Condamine (2941m). Explore the charming hamlet of Pierrefeu nestling at the foot<br />
of the mountain, discover the delightful village of Puy Chalvin, the mountain pastures<br />
at Les Combes, the Partias Nature Reserve adjoining the Chauvet li� system with its<br />
�i<strong>en</strong>dly visitor c<strong>en</strong>tre and mountain restaurant, easily accessible �om the top of the<br />
Prorel gondola.<br />

Villard Saint Pancrace<br />
This traditional village is down river �om <strong>Briançon</strong>, betwe<strong>en</strong> the banks of<br />
the Durance and the Queyras mountains. What was once a mining and<br />
farming community has preserved its traditional houses, sundials, and listed<br />
chapels and churches.<br />
�e peaks of Peyre Eyraute and Mélézin, and the Croix de Bretagne Fort<br />
dominate the village and the slopes here offer great hikes and picnic spots, with<br />
forest roads and tracks winding their way through the Bois des Ayes (nature<br />
