SEE IT hERE fIRST!
for 45 years, the Chicago International Film Festival has brought you the brightest
and boldest new films and filmmakers—from Slumdog Millionaire and Reservoir Dogs
to Martin Scorsese, Fassbinder, Wenders, and Herzog—first. Did you hang out to chat
with The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky last year? Or listen to Kevin Smith crack
the audience up for an hour after Zack and Miri Make a Porno? Maybe you saw
Rachel Weisz or Viggo Mortensen, or Jada Pinkett Smith at her directorial debut?
Were you sitting near Quentin Tarantino when we premiered his smash Inglourious
Basterds at our Summer Gala? Or getting an advance look at the year’s hottest films
at our exclusive Cinema/Chicago Member screenings (p. 41)? Feel free to brag.
So what can you expect to see this year? The most anticipated films and the stars you
love (Uma Thurman, Martin Landau, and Willem Dafoe to name a few), sure, but the real
fun of the Festival is pushing your boundaries and discovering something new with us….
Opening Night: Motherhood
Directed by katherine Dieckmann
Uma Thurman shines in this charming,
high-energy comedy as a beleaguered
Manhattanite just trying to survive another
day of madness raising two young kids
(and a husband and best friend) in the
most frenzied city in the world. Between
planning little Clare’s birthday party,
navigating a neighborhood under siege
by tourists and film crews, and dealing
with the neuroses of every other frazzled
mom on the playground, can Eliza find
the time to chase her own aspirations as
a writer? Anthony Edwards and Minnie
Driver round out this sharp-witted cast.
Festival Centerpiece: Precious Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire
Directed by lee Daniels
Set in Harlem in 1987, Precious: Based on
the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire is the story of a
16-year-old African American girl born into a
life no one would want. Claireece “Precious”
Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) is pregnant for the
second time by her absent father. At home,
she must wait hand and foot on her abusive
and poisonously angry mother (Mo’Nique).
School is a place of chaos, and Precious
has reached the ninth grade with an awful
secret: She can neither read nor write.
Precious may sometimes be down, but
she is never out. Winner of three awards at
Sundance, Precious is a vibrant, honest and
resoundingly hopeful film about the human
capacity to grow and overcome.
From the edgy to the tender, these bold gay-themed films
fearlessly exhibit new artistic perspectives on sexuality.
Without the battlefield cook, there is
no war—because without the cook,
there is no food. Using the field kitchen
POLITIST, ADJECTIV
Director: Corneliu Porumboiu
From the writer/director of the internationally
acclaimed 12:08 East of Bucharest comes
an austere cop drama that says a lot
by doing a little. Young inspector Cristi’s
conscience is keeping him from sending
a kid to jail for seven years on a dopesmoking
charge, but his by-the-book boss
has other ideas about the definition of
‘police.’ Affirming Porumboiu as a singular
new talent, Police, Adjective is already the
winner of two top awards at Cannes.
This strangely hypnotic tale follows a young
man’s quest for love through the seediest
spots in contemporary Mexico City. Named
best gay-themed feature at Berlin, the film
creates a deeply sensual atmosphere by
blending intense eroticism and arresting
monochrome visuals. For art film lovers, the
rewards are worth the challenge.
Director: Péter Gárdos
For the rambunctious seventh graders at
an early-20th-century boarding school,
the preferred extracurricular activity is
playing increasingly outrageous pranks
on one brainy classmate. The lax Father
Zoltan thinks boys will be boys, but
when stern young Father Weigl begins
to implement his own secret plan to
curb the kids’ “anarchic activity,” he
unwittingly sets the entire school on a
tragic course.
The irony of disease, drug addictions,
Director: Julian Jarrold
The moody, haunting first film of a trilogy
the audience in an investigation by
Eddie Dunford, a newspaper crime
correspondent. While reporting on the
John Woo puts his singular stamp on the art of war in this Chinese box office smash.
Based on the classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Red Cliff
dramatizes the scandals, spies, and romance surrounding the epic battle that
signaled the end of the third-century Han Dynasty. Spectacularly choreographed
martial arts and heroic combat show the struggle of the southern alliance as they
face off against the massive invading forces from the north, led by a corrupt prime
Nine years after the conviction and
imprisonment of a suspected child
murderer, the disturbingly familiar
disappearance of a new victim sends
deep tremors through the life of
policeman Maurice Jobson. Through
this new disappearance, the sadeyed,
subdued Jobson is forced to
come to terms with—and atone for—
the role he has played in the police
department’s unsavory past practices.
