LOUDOUN FREE CLINIC
Annual Report to the Community
July 1, 2011—June 30, 2012
2012 Highlights
July 1, 2011—June 30, 2012
“If the Clinic had not been here, I would
have had nowhere to go. I would have
really suffered. The Clinic saved my life.”
- Zachary, an
LFC patient
The Loudoun Free Clinic is a non-profit organization serving as a gateway to care for low-income,
uninsured adults in Loudoun County.
For ten years we have provided compassionate, expert medical care to those who are most in need.
FY12 Highlights

We cared for 1,251 patients during a record-breaking
3,793 in-clinic medical visits (a 31% increase over
last year).
We distributed 13,938 prescriptions valued at
almost $1.8 million to our patients.
Our volunteers set a 10-year record with over 6,463
hours of service this year valued at more than
$197,550.
We delivered $6 in medical care for every $1
spent.

Kaiser Permanente donated a full-time provider
to LFC through the Kaiser Community Ambassador
Program. The program matches skilled clinicians,
including nurse practitioners and physician assistants,
with selected safety net health clinics.
“I’m so appreciative of the care I’ve received,
and so grateful.
The community is the true hero in this story.
This work Thanks can’t be done to without the support the community.”
partners, in 2012 we provided $3.5 million in medical
of our volunteers and community and
corporate
services to at-risk residents.
- Barbara, an
LFC patient

Quest Diagnostics championed LFC with a tremendous
partnership. Beginning in June 2012, Quest began
handling all laboratory work for LFC patients
at no cost.
We received a $50,000 grant from Kaiser
Permanente to begin the process of implementing
electronic medical records, which will result in the
use of evidence-based treatment protocols, increased
workflow efficiency, and enhanced data collection for
reliable, more meaningful reporting.

We implemented a Diabetic Management program
based on nationally accepted standards of care. The
database being utilized gives providers a consistent way
to follow patients’ health indicators and to adjust care
as specified.
2012 Highlights
Message From The Chairman & Executive Director
Patrick “Red” McCabe, MBA
Chairman of the Board
Debra Townsend, RN
Executive Director
FY 2012 saw poverty dramatically increase in Loudoun County, and the Clinic was suddenly deluged with a rapidly
expanding at-risk patient base in a stubbornly contracting economy. To combat that alarming trend, the Clinic’s Board of Directors,
staff and volunteers participated with us in assessing and implementing strategies to re-engineer the manner in which
we achieve our mission of mercy.
Focus on Costs: We embarked on a successful cost reduction and corporate sponsorship campaign. The best example
of that strategy is Quest Diagnostics. We approached Quest and asked that all Clinic lab costs be donated in-kind.
Quest explored our Clinic, interviewed our leadership, and eliminated $100,000 of annual diagnostic expenses. Quest became
a major corporate donor overnight.
Fundraising Expansion: Based on current economic conditions and increasing patient levels, we understood that
a single annual fundraising Gala would no longer be sufficient. The “Seasons of Care” initiative was launched, designed to
increase both the awareness of our mission and the level of fundraising. In addition to our annual black tie Gala, the Clinic
will now host seasonal events each year. Each seasonal event will have a decidedly different appeal and approach to our donors.
To further enhance donation levels, all future events will contain both “Ask Cards” and “Giving Trees” for ad hoc donations,
providing an additional outlet for our attendees and their guests to express their support for our mission.
Operating Efficiency: Studying the manner in which our Clinic operated, several infrastructure changes were
made, increasing operational efficiencies and reducing costs. These changes also provided more command and control authority
to our seasoned and experienced senior managers and health care professionals. A new focus on teamwork was also
launched within the Clinic. All of this was done to ensure a patient-centric, cost effective clinic. These changes were made to
amplify the message to our donors that we are always searching for ways to use donated funds most prudently.
Brand Awareness: To increase brand awareness of the Loudoun Free Clinic, we embarked on an active campaign
to have our executives and managers seek out and spread our mission to new business, philanthropic, community and medical
leaders, both in and out of Loudoun County. We believe this new “friend raising” initiative will yield important life saving benefits.
Call to Action: We felt that the Clinic would benefit from a more direct and intentional request for help from other
like-minded and kindhearted people. To achieve that goal, we prominently featured our new call to action, “Make Us Your
Mission” on all of our business, marketing and fundraising collateral. Initial performance trends on this new call to action
are positive from a donor, volunteer and staff perspective.
By the Numbers: In FY2012, the Clinic provided the following free medical services without a single penny
from Federal tax payers:
Performed over 3,790 in clinic medical visits
Distributed 13,938 prescriptions valued at almost $1.8M
Provided Loudoun County approximately $3.5M of medical services
Donated over 6,400 hours of service through its 200+ volunteers
Delivered $6 of medical care for every $1 spent
New Year, New Challenges: FY2013 is trending to be more difficult and less forgiving to our Loudoun brothers
and sisters most at risk. We appreciate and take strength from our Board, Staff, Volunteers and Donors. With your support
there is no doubt that we are up to the task of treating illness, restoring health and hope, and prevailing against poverty. We
sincerely thank each of you for standing with us shoulder to shoulder, while you generously “Make Us Your Mission.”
Our Impact
“For years, no doctor ever took the time to figure
out what was wrong. No one noticed the
blockage until I came to the Free Clinic.”
- Suzanne, an
LFC patient
When Suzanne came to the Loudoun Free Clinic, she had no idea her life was about to change. Until a few years
ago, Suzanne had health insurance and a full-time job. Then in 2005 Suzanne received the heartbreaking news
that her mom had cancer. Devastated, she took time off work to help care for her mom. She was let go not long
after, and lost her health insurance. For the next few years Suzanne cared for her mom while struggling with
health issues of her own. High blood pressure and seizures from a car accident years earlier landed Suzanne in
the hospital over and over, until she could no longer afford to provide for her own medical care. Without any
other option, Suzanne finally came to the Loudoun Free Clinic.
During Suzanne’s first visit, the providers at LFC made an alarming discovery: An abnormal sound in the artery
leading from her heart to her brain. She was sent immediately for an ultrasound, which confirmed our worst
fear. Suzanne had a serious blockage that prevented blood from getting to her brain, leaving her at risk of stroke
and even death. The Clinic Staff reacted quickly, reaching out to Dr. Russell McDow and Dr. Brita Kriss, two of
our dedicated volunteer specialists in the field. Drs. McDow and Kriss confirmed the diagnosis and scheduled
Suzanne for immediate surgery to remove the blockage and repair the artery.
Thanks to the quick action and generosity of our volunteers and community partners, Suzanne had a successful
surgery and is well on the road to recovery. “If it weren’t for Drs. McDow and Kriss, there could have been a
very different outcome, “ said Pati Nicholson, the LFC Physician Assistant who first discovered the blockage.
“Suzanne was in significant danger, and our volunteer doctors literally saved her life.”
LFC was able to provide Suzanne’s medical care through the generosity of volunteers, our medical referral
network and our in-kind and financial donors. Without the Clinic and its supporters, Suzanne could have lost
her life. Her story is a reminder to all of us that every single person has the ability to make a difference.
Our Impact
“I never thought in a million years that this would happen.”
For his entire adult life, Andrew Nicoletti lived everyone’s dream. He worked as a corporate accountant, made plenty
of money, and never had health problems. Then, for the first time in his life, he found himself in the hospital with
a life threatening bacterial infection. He was hospitalized for two and a half months. When he was released he
found himself without a job, and without health insurance.
The economic crash of 2008 made it very difficult for Andrew to find steady work, and it ultimately cost him everything.
He lost his savings and his house. He had to declare bankruptcy. He had nothing left and nowhere to turn
when he noticed a spot on his back that had been causing pain. The spot turned out to be skin cancer.
Andrew had surgery to remove the cancer, but without insurance or income he couldn’t afford follow-up care. For
Andrew, coming to the Free Clinic was a last resort.
“I never thought in a million years that this would happen.”
Many of our patients come to us when they have nowhere else to go, after they have been living with illness for
weeks, months or even years. Andrew was no exception. Without health insurance or the money to pay for a doctor’s
visit out of pocket, he was forced to ignore dangerous symptoms until they couldn’t be ignored any longer.
Although Andrew first came to us for wound care after his surgery, he was actually very sick. Andrew was diagnosed
with diabetes, hypertension, anemia and hypothyroidism.
The years of pain and struggle took a big toll on Andrew. He battled depression, and there were times when he
thought about ending his life. The Free Clinic wasn’t about to let that happen. The staff and volunteers rallied
around Andrew and pushed him to fight. We scheduled him for weekly visits to get the diabetes under control, sent
him to podiatrists, ophthalmologists and wound care, and made sure all his treatments, medications and labs were
handled at no cost. Everyone at the Free Clinic fought for Andrew, and he made a stunning turnaround.
Thanks to everyone involved, Andrew is getting healthy. He has a future. He is a true story of hope and a tribute to
what your support can do for those in need.
“If it wasn’t for the Clinic, I’d be dead. They
never gave up on me. They pushed me to get
better. I had nothing, and I couldn’t have
done it on my own.
They saved my life, and I am so grateful.”
- Andrew, an LFC patient
Volunteers
July 1, 2011—June 30, 2012
“Our patients are heroes—they are
surviving with nothing.
We are here to empower them and help
them get back on their feet.”
- Mistafa, an
LFC volunteer
Mistafa Hafid , a volunteer at LFC, knows better than anyone how much of an
impact a Free Clinic can make on someone in need.
Mistafa’s family emigrated to the US from Iraq in 2001. His parents made the difficult decision to move the family because, like any
parents, they wanted their children to have a better life—something they couldn’t have in Iraq. When they came to the US they had
nowhere to go, and for years they lived on the streets, struggling to make ends meet. Then Mistafa’s youngest sister, 7 months, got
very sick. They had no choice but to take her to a Free Clinic. Thanks to the efforts of the team at that Clinic she recovered, and the
Hafid family was able to move on. They qualified for food stamps and section 8 housing, and ultimately were able to find work.
Mistafa’s dad worked two jobs, working overnight as a dispatcher and during the day as a delivery driver. His mom took on as much
work as she could, working in foster care, as a math tutor, and as a substitute for local public schools. They worked hard and saved,
dreaming of buying a house for their family and sending their kids to school. In 2006 their hard work was rewarded, and the Hafids
were able to buy a home in Loudoun. Mistafa went on to graduate from Virginia Tech and pursue a graduate degree, his younger
brother is now a first-year medical student and both sisters are excelling in school.
The Hafid children may have had very different lives if it weren’t for the support the family received in the last few years. They are
an example of how even a small amount of help can make a world of difference.
Mistafa came to volunteer at the Free Clinic because he knows firsthand how much of an impact a Free Clinic can make. He is applying
to medical school and plans to work as a doctor treating underserved populations. He is passionate about this mission, and
knows that a Free Clinic is often enough to help someone get back on their feet and make a better life.
“People have a misconception about Free Clinic patients. There are some out there that think our patients are lazy, or different, but
it’s not true. Most of the time our patients are here through no fault of their own, because bad things can happen to anyone. Our
patients are heroes. They’re surviving with nothing, and we are here to empower them and help them get back on their feet”

New Clinic Update
After ten years in our current home, the
Loudoun Free Clinic will soon relocate to a
4,986 sq. ft. space in the Leesburg medical
complex of Inova Loudoun Hospital. The
new space, generously donated by Inova
Loudoun Hospital, is nearly 40% larger than
our current facility and will allow us to provide
care to an increased roster of patients
while expanding our current services.
The building initiative requires unprecedented
support from the community, and LFC is
proud to offer naming opportunities to help
support this critical move. Naming a space
within the Clinic is a wonderful way to pay
tribute to a loved one while supporting LFC’s
mission. If you are interested in being a part
of LFC’s future by naming a space, please call
Katherine Gatewood at 703-779-5418 or
email kgatewood@loudounfreeclinic.org.
