Auction Cattlelogue
Welcome to the Battle!
Are You Ready To Rumble
It is time to Battle for Cattle! After months of
exhibition, the cows are finally ready for auction.
CowParade North Carolina was an exciting event
for our region and state. Eighty cow canvases
were whimsically transformed by regional artists
and placed on display at universities, museums,
store fronts, outdoor malls, restaurants, banks
and entertainment venues throughout Raleigh,
Durham, Chapel Hill and beyond the Triangle
in cities such as Fayetteville, Garner, Greenville,
Knightdale and Wilmington. We are proud to have
been the host state for this free, family-friendly
event which captured the hearts of people in
North Carolina.
The CowParade North Carolina live auction
is for a worthy cause—North Carolina Children’s
Hospital. Every year more than 70,000 patients
throughout the state are treated at the Children’s
Hospital, and millions more benefit from the
Hospital’s research and outreach to community
hospitals and pediatricians. With your help we
can raise a lot of mooolah for the health and wellbeing
of our children through the sale of these
cow masterpieces.
Show your love by displaying a cow in your
home or vacation abode. Bring smiles to the faces
of your employees, clients and the public by placing
one in your business or office. A cow can also be enjoyed in your sunroom, garden or around your pool.
Finally, cows can also be donated to your favorite town, school, charity, park or institution.
Thank you for attending the auction and for joining us in support of North Carolina’s children.
Sincerely,
About CowParade North Carolina
CowParade, the world’s largest public art event
stampeded through the Triangle, fall of 2012. Cow-
Parade North Carolina 2012 was presented by Wells
Fargo and featured 80 life-size cow sculptures, all
whimsically transformed by regional artists, professional
and amateur. The stylized cows grazed in
high-trafficked public places throughout greater
Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh.
Cows were displayed in streets, storefronts and
other public places, a virtual free outdoor museum
of cows. The life-sized bovines are approximately 8
feet long and 5 feet high. After transformation, the
artist-rendered cows were given fanciful names fitting
of their designs; including Alexander Moo-lian
Bowvine, Cow House, Sock Mookey, CowBot, and
Nesting Cow-dinal
CowParade North Carolina 2012 presented by
Lot #14. Lotus Cow
Artist: Georges Le Chevallier. Sponsor: Quintiles. The Lotus Cow
Maasai were stunning. The jewelry in every photo originally caught our eyes, but that was only the beginning. The
fabrics, the intricate beadwork, their kind smiling faces, were all our inspiration. When we discovered through
some research the importance of cows in their culture, it was decided we would create a Moo Sai Warrior Cow.
Lot #18. Night-N-Day
Artist: Helen Seebold. Sponsor: CowParade North Carolina. “My
artistic body of work is greatly inspired by nature and ancient
cultures and I have combined these two influences to create
“Night-N-Day.” Drawing from the influences of Chinese brush
painting and Ukiyo-e, the Japanese term for “floating world.”
I have created a sunrise scene on one side of the cow and a
crescent-moon night scene on the other. A stylistic, shadowed
tree weaves through the sun and moon beams over a body of
water to create a contrast of vibrant colors and texture that I
hope will intrigue the viewer.”—Helen Seebold
map of North Carolina that indicates various landmarks, sites
raised and continue to call home.”— Earle Kluttz-Thompson and
Raines Thompson
Lot #21. Patches
Artist: Aiden Kenny. Sponsor: Wells Fargo. “The patchwork design
represents traditional country/farm life as both the gentle cow
and an old patchwork quilt were things commonly seen on a
farm in the past. Hopefully, we will continue to see them on
farms in the future as we go back to healthy, natural, farming
and humane animal care methods.”— Aiden Kenny
Lot #22. Sea Cow
Artist: Matt O’Neal. Sponsor: Reelin’ for Research. North Carolina
and for the table is the mahi mahi or dolphin. They roam the
pelagic zone with other predators such as marlin and sailfish
in search of tasty morsels like the flying fish that can leap out
Lot #24.
The Cow is Greener on the Other Side
Artist: Warren Anthony Hicks. Sponsor: Johnson Lexus of Durham.
“I’m an abstract painter and saw the cow as a 3d canvas. I knew
it would be a challenge moving from 2d to 3d. It’s the same as a
belt maker switching to shoes, which both come from cows.”
Artists: Earle Kluttz-Thompson and Raines Thompson
of Kluttz-Thompson Designs. Sponsor: Wells Fargo.
“This design is based on “Rameses,” the unc mascot
which, as alumni, is especially near and dear to our
the learning experience for a pair of mural painters.”—
Earle Kluttz-Thompson and Raines Thompson
Lot #26. North Cowolina State Woof
Artist: Mary Stone Lamb. Sponsor: Wells Fargo. This
cow mirrors his hero, Mr. Wuf, by wearing a red
academic bent. In the transition from cow to wolf,
the cow’s horns were removed and a bushy tail
added, the hooves were traded for hairy paws and
the ears transplanted.
Lot #28. Moo Devil
Artist: Margaret Sink. Sponsor: KBR Building Group.
center of the cow and his idea of a field of
fixed stars attached to an immovable sphere
for the rest. I strove to combine science and art
as a reminder of the blinding beauty that surrounds
us all.”—Beth Hallyburton
Lot #41 Inside and Outside the Beltway
Artist: Teresa Prichard. Sponsor: Wells Fargo. “The Belted Galloway
cow was inspired by trips to Fearington Village in Pittsboro
when my children were younger. I wanted to represent the
three distinct geographical areas of North Carolina.”
Lot #42 La Catrina*
Artist: Jenn Hales. Sponsor: Howard Merrell and Partners. La
covered in bones and flowers.
Lot #39. Lady Carolina Bloo
Artist: Paula MacLeod. Sponsor: UNC Health Care/Rex Healthcare. This is a cow made for N.C. Children’s Hospital using
materials donated from Vietri ceramics. It features iconic unc symbols and colors. Over 160 hours worth of work went
into this masterpiece and it is accented with special “hidden” figures taken from Vietri patterns. A truly one-of-a-kind
piece, special to our region!
Lot #43 Dogwood Blossum
Artist: Amy Veatch. Sponsor: Wells Fargo. She is covered with
dogwood blossoms and leaves, her background is a blue sky.
The artist loves dogwood trees and flowers and imagined the
design first as a blanket of roses on a winning racehorse, then
translated that to the cow.
Lot #44 Moonhay
Artist: Rhea Ormond. Sponsor: The Dairy Farm Families of North
Carolina. “Monet has always been one of my favorite artists. I
went to France to study his color theories. I decided to paint
hayrolls in Monet’s style on the cow with the focus being light
and color.”—Rhea Ormond
Aguiar of CAN Decorative Painting, drawing provided
by Molly California. Sponsor: Quintiles. “The
Mootallic Cow—we love this finish. This is all
yet creating a very clean, professional look that
highlights (literally) our creativity and skill.”
Lot #49. Bovine in Black and White
Artist: Hilary Clement. Sponsor: CowParade North Carolina. Black
vines elegantly wrapping around a white cow, this design was
inspired by china figurines.
Lot #50. Bull Durham
Artist: Rachel Campbell. Sponsor: Golden Belt. Stylized depictions
of Durham’s downtown skyline on both sides of the cow,
which in fact is transformed into a small bull, complete with
nose ring.
Lot #46. Birtha*
Artist: Andria Linn. Sponsor: The People. Designed from an original painting by Andria Linn entitled “Welcome To This
World,” Birtha is about life, love, rebirth and giving. She is wrapped in flowers that have “spirits” bursting out in an array of
colors and energy. There are cocoons entwined in life branches of cherry blossoms that symbolize newness and expectation
for what life’s challenges bring us. The overall representation Birtha brings us is refreshment and joy for life. This cow’s
sponsorship was completely funded by donations raised by the artists through 64 “Birtha backers”—this makes her the first
cow in CowParade history to be sponsored by a group of individuals rather than a company or organization.
Lot #47. Bearden Bovine
Artist: Jim Hunt. Sponsor: Curtis Media Group. “My inspiration
for the Bearden Bovine comes from the artwork of North
Carolina-born artist, Romare Bearden, along with my own
personal love of colour. Bearden’s artwork of collage and mixed
media was a leading artistic concept in the Harlem Renaissance
movement.”—Jim Hunt
Lot #48. Belt-Less Galloway Mechanicow
Artist: Lynn Marie Wartski. Sponsor: CowParade North Carolina.
Gear-driven, steam powered mechanical “steampunk” cow. The
name is a play on the Belted Galloway cow breed, also known
as “Oreo Cookie Cows.” This cow has magnificent accents of
glass and metal.
Lot #51 Grace’s Cow
Artist: Greg Carter. Sponsor: The News & Observer. “A big doodle for Grace. Creativity is play when we are children.
Somehow, somewhere, we lose the ability to play, and with it, the access to our creativity. Many of us freely give up
both for fear of how we might be perceived by the world at large. Others extinguish it when they are introduced to the
“adult skills” of judgement, suppression and intolerance. Still others fear it for the “impulsive” or “uncontrolled” labels
that they have learned to associate with the “creative person.” Creativity, and its embodiment in play, is none of these. It
should be judged only for the fruit that it bears: the delight of the unexpected.”—Greg Cartel
Lot #52. The Milky Way
Artist: Jenn Hales. Sponsor: Johnson Lexus of Raleigh. Our galaxy
spins around as a cow jumps over the moon.
Lot #53. St. Augustine Monster
Artist: Jamie Wolcott. Sponsor: Quick Moves Inc. In 1896, a giant
octopus washed up on shore in St. Augustine Florida. The
remains of the octopus measured nearly 42 feet in length and
weighed 5 tons. They called it the St. Augustine Monster. Here,
the St. Augustine Monster rises from the waves, taking hold of
a hapless schooner…dragging it into the briny deep.
Lot #58. ConfettiCow
Artist: Debbie Martz. Sponsor: Wells Fargo. “Confetti Cow is
the ultimate in fun! She is covered with an iridescent purple
zebra pattern. Her contrasting confetti stripes are created from
crayon shavings. I felt inspired to create this cow design when
I rediscovered a favorite bookmark I made with my children
many years ago by sandwiching crayon shavings between clear
packing tape. This happy memory of creating with my children
and my ultimate love of purple and zebras came together in one
“udderly” fantastic cow.”— Debbie Martz
Lot #59. The Dreamer
Artist: Scott Harris. Sponsor: Law Offices of James Scott Farrin. This
bandana wearing Bessy is a born and bred city cow, although
it’s now dreaming of the wide open spaces of the homeland.
Through art, the Dreamer has decided to begin the journey
away from all the steel and glass of the city and look for greener
pastures.
Lot #54. Show Me the Moo-lah
Artist: Julia Freifeld. Sponsor: Wells Fargo. This cow was on display
at Wells Fargo in downtown Raleigh on Fayetteville Street.
The cow comes in two pieces and is installed in such a way that
it gives the appearance of a cow jumping through a window.
This design really attracts attention and would be a great addition
to a bank, real estate business, restaurant or other retail
establishment. As an added bonus, the installation is included.
Lot #55. Penny,
The Amazing Coin Converting Cow
Artist: Debbie Martz. Sponsor: Wells Fargo. In this economy,
Penny may be our best bet for compound interest. When coins
are dropped into Penny, she miraculously converts spare change
into dollars which she will dispense at your leisure. A large
wooden coin appears to be entering the slot painted on her
back. She is so focused on her job that dollar signs are reflected
in her green eyes.
Lot #60. The 80th Cow
Artist: Erick Davis. Sponsor: CowParade North Carolina. The
artist, who has created several public and residential mosaics
in Chapel Hill and Carrboro including the Fire Dragon
Egg at Jessee’s Café, the mosaic boulders at Brier Chapel
