Arts and the <strong>City</strong><br />

After four years raising over<br />

$2million to repair, expand and<br />

restore the building, the Anna<br />

Templeton Centre for Craft, Art and<br />

Design was reopened in <strong>2007</strong>. The<br />

building was originally constructed<br />

in 1849 to house Newfoundland’s<br />

first commercial bank. The building<br />

was donated to the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>.John’s<br />

in 1985 who in turn leased it to the<br />

Anna Templeton Centre. The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>St</strong>.John’s contributed $850,000 to the<br />

renovation project. The federal<br />

government also contributed to the<br />

project through the Cultural Spaces<br />

Canada program administered by Canadian Heritage. The Anna<br />

Templeton Centre enhances the downtown, is an excellent example<br />

<strong>of</strong> adaptive reuse <strong>of</strong> a heritage building, and plays a significant role<br />

in the quality <strong>of</strong> life for residents and visitors.<br />

<strong>City</strong> Murals<br />

The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. John’s added another beautiful mural to its collection<br />

in <strong>2007</strong>. Created by local artists Derek Holmes and April Norman,<br />

the mural is located on the side <strong>of</strong> the building at 61 Hamilton<br />

Avenue (as you enter from Water <strong>St</strong>reet). The mural depicts a quiet<br />

rural setting. The <strong>City</strong> commissions muralists as part <strong>of</strong> its <strong>City</strong> as<br />

Canvas program. Murals beautify the <strong>City</strong>, invest in the local arts<br />

community, and engage the public with art.<br />

<strong>City</strong> Grants<br />

The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>St</strong>. John’s awarded over<br />

$1.4 million in grants as follows:<br />
