superior genetics for other key traits
such as survival or body size.”

pressure from surrounding properties.
Nearly all whitetail bucks are capable of
producing a respectable set of antlers given
time and appropriate nutrition. While it
may take longer for some bucks to reach a
harvestable status than others, aggressive
removal of “inferior” young bucks simply
reduces the number of bucks available in
future years.
If the property under management is several
thousand acres or larger (or high-fenced)
and your goal is to produce fully mature
bucks with high-scoring antlers, removal
of bucks with undesirable antler traits may
be justifiable.In most cases, these removals
cannot be justified from a genetic standpoint.
In these situations, most bucks are removed
because they have reached their prime (5
1/2 to 7 1/2 years of age) and do not possess
the desired antler size or quality or are past
their prime (8 1/2+) and are not likely to
produce a larger set of antlers in the future.
In either case, these bucks probably already
contributed genetically to the herd, so
removing them would have little impact on
herd genetics. Many “over the hill” bucks
may have been tremendous bucks in earlier
years and actually have superior genetics to
those left in the herd.
Now that you are thoroughly confused, let’s
look at some other groups of bucks that
could be considered for removal under most
deer management programs. These include
piebald bucks, “velvet bucks,” bucks with
serious antler or body injuries, or those
exhibiting symptoms of disease or severe
malnutrition. Of these, only the piebald
condition is related to genetics. The removal
of bucks in the remaining categories should
only be considered for population reduction
purposes or to put a sick or injured animal
out of its misery.
Piebald deer are the result of a rare
combination of recessive genes inherited
from both parents. These animals typically
have large patches of white on their coat
and often have skeletal deformities such
as a deformed spine, malformed legs, or
a humped or “Roman” nose. Because the
piebald condition is relatively rare (less than
1 percent in most areas), it is not generally
considered a management concern. If these
animals become relatively common within a
particular herd, they should be removed.
Velvet bucks are another category of bucks
that could be removed. These are bucks that
remain in velvet throughout the year and
never shed their antlers. A common cause
of velvet bucks is an absence or inadequate
supply of testosterone (needed for antler
hardening and velvet shedding) caused by
damage to or loss of the testes. Another
related condition is called cryptorchidism,
where the testes fail to descend into the
scrotal sac and remain in the abdomen. The
high body temperatures in the abdomen
prevent normal testosterone production.
