TROPHIES GALORE: Laxey’s players and management pose with all of Manx football’s major trophies — the league
championship, FA Cup, Railway Cup, Hospital Cup and Charity Shield — at the end of an amazing season
Miners hit rich
seam of form
There’s no stopping Laxey as they complete Grand Slam
THE 2005-06 season was all about one
club. Laxey completely dominated
Manx football as they swept to a
magnificent Grand Slam of major honours.
The Miners remained undefeated
throughout the campaign to claim their
place in the history books alongside Peel,
Gymns and St Mary’s.
The club’s clean sweep of trophies started
in rather unspectacular fashion last
August when they defeated St George’s on
penalties after a drab 0-0 draw in the
Charity Shield.
But it soon became apparent that management
duo Steve Moran and Paul
Bridson had assembled a formidable
squad.
Laxey showed power, pace and quality as
they brushed aside allcomers to secure the
league title, Railway Cup, FA Cup and
Hospital Cup.
Teenage striker Chris Brown underlined
his talent by capturing the Golden Boot as
OSA Division One’s leading marksman and
there were important contributions from
players such as Mark Blair, Keith Brown,
Ross Williamson, Neil Brogan and Rob
Sorby.
Expectations had been building in the
Glen Road camp before the big kick-off last
summer — but nobody could have predicted
the amazing success that lay ahead.
In fact, most local pundits quizzed in the
Manx Independent’s annual poll tipped St
George’s to maintain their stranglehold on
the championship.
However, the Geordies were hit by
injuries and fell short of their own high
standards to finish as runners-up to Laxey
in the league and two Cup competitions.
Peel and St Mary’s also threatened to
mount sustained title challenges, but
could not match the leaders’ relentless
pace in the closing stages.
The 2005-06 season also witnessed the
end of one of the proudest records in local
football.
Castletown MFC had never plied their
trade outside of the top division — but the
spectre of relegation loomed large for Gary
Sansbury’s side from day one.
The southerners eventually succumbed
to the inevitable and were joined — somewhat
surprisingly — by Old Boys.
The youngsters from Blackberry Lane
had been tipped to continue their impressive
progress, but were pipped by Marown
in the battle for survival.
In CFS Division Two, the promotion race
looked wide open with several clubs capable
of finishing in the top two.
However, Union Mills quickly emerged
as the team to beat and they duly wrapped
up the championship along with the Paul
Henry Gold Cup.
Braddan, bolstered by some good signings,
put together a consistent sequence of
results to clinch the second promotion
spot ahead of teams such as the Police,
Colby and Michael United.
Colby had the consolation of lifting the
GH Corlett Woods Cup, while Pulrose
demonstrated their potential by reaching
the FA Cup Final before becoming another
of Laxey’s many victims.
National
heroes
THE Isle of Man national football team
enjoyed one of the most significant
achievements in its history earlier this
year.
A superb run in the National League
System Cup culminated in victory over
Cambridgeshire in the final.
As the tournament winners, Kevin
Manning’s side secured the right to
represent the English Football
Association in Europe. The squad will
travel to Prague in April next year to
compete against the other qualifying
nations in the UEFA Regions Cup.
It marks a remarkable
accomplishment for the Isle of Man who
had to defeat several English county
sides before lifting the NLS Cup.
Celebrations were in full flow in May
when skipper Nigel Shimmin held aloft
the prestigious trophy.
On the lookout for Manx football’s ‘Mr Consistent’
ISLE of Man Newspapers is on the lookout for
Manx football’s most consistent players.
The idea is to highlight individuals who put
in excellent performances for their clubs on a
weekly basis.
Football author and statistician Eric Clague
has assembled a group of independent
observers to watch every league fixture in
OSA Division One this season.
Points will be awarded to the top five players
in each match on a sliding scale.
Those points will then be totted up to
produce a monthly table along with a running
total for the season.
That is just one of the new projects being
launched for 2006-07.
A football microsite has also been
introduced, accessed via our website
iomtoday.co.im
We are aiming to provide comprehensive
coverage for the new season and will be
initially concentrating on the senior men’s
game, providing fixtures, results, previews and
reports.
Coverage of the junior and women’s games
will develop as the season progresses, along
with the chance to vote in our website polls
(suggestions welcome) and to log your
comments in our guestbook (coming soon).
to retain title
LAXEY (champions 2005-06) will kick-off as
the undisputed kings of Manx football after
their Grand Slam success.
And the bad news for their rivals is that
Steve Moran’s side are stronger and hungrier
than ever.
The depth of the squad was one of the key
factors in their phenomenal run. And while
there has been little transfer activity at Glen
Road, the availability of Ollie Theobald and
Carl Barks will increase competition for places.
And a strong backbone featuring Mark Blair,
Ross Williamson Keith Brown, Johnny Callow
and Chris Brown will ensure Laxey remain
red-hot favourites.
Our prediction Title challengers
In terms of their first 11, few teams can
compete with a ST GEORGE’S (2nd) lineup
boasting a host of Island internationals.
But injuries were Geordies’ undoing last
campaign and a repeat of those problems
could shatter the club’s title aspirations.
A relatively quiet summer has seen few
transfers, although the acquisitions of James
McStay and Martin Torr have strengthened
the squad.
If players such as Jonny Myers, Calum
Morrissey and Chris Bass Jr can stay fit, St
George’s will be in the mix come May.
Our prediction Title challengers
PEEL (3rd) look capable of challenging
Laxey’s status as the Island’s dominant force.
The return of Nick Hurt is the obvious highlight
of the club’s summer recruitments and
his presence should add about 20 goals.
Juan Killip’s arrival will further boost the
attacking options, while Chris Cain is set to
make his comeback from a long-term injury.
The team is packed with Island internationals
such as Kevin Megson, Nigel Shimmin,
Rob Cottier, Daniel Lace and Marc Kelly so
there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic.
Our prediction Title challengers
Perenially there or thereabouts, ST
MARY’S (4th) enter the 06-07 campaign
bullish about their title prospects after an
impressive pre-season.
Striker Stephen Glover has departed for old
club Corinthians, but in former Marown striker
Martin Reilly the Saints has a more than
capable replacement.
If manager Peter Roberts can field his
strongest side on a consistent basis St Mary’s
could have a say in the title race.
ST JOHN’S (5th) will be determined to
consolidate their top-flight status — but may
be hard pressed to repeat last season’s excellent
finishing position of fifth.
Manager Andrew Dooley will have to perform
a certain amount of rebuilding after the
departures of Nick Hurt, John Roberts, Paul
Corlett, Mark Tully and Michael Quine.
On a more positive note Phil Mayers, Jack
Walton and young goalkeeper Jay Gandy
should make a good impact.
The nucleus of the team remains intact and
St John’s boast a solid spine in Nick Leung,
Johnny Holland and Liam Harrison.
Our prediction Bottom half
Last season’s top-six finish marked a genuine
improvement for Alan Cowley’s DOU-
GLAS ROYAL (6th).
Despite losing the services of Dean Gough
and James McStay, the Noble’s Park outfit
should be even better equipped this time
round after securing the services of Gavin
Gawne and goalkeeper Will Mitchell.
Assistant manager Mark Kelly will bring a
wealth of experience and could be the perfect
foil to Alan Cowley. And as long as they stay
clear of injury, Royal could shock a few teams.
Our prediction Mid table
GYMNS (7th) will start the new campaign
full of confidence after making an encouraging
return to top-flight football.
The Tromode side initially struggled to
adapt to life in division one, but turned the
corner in impressive style. And there is a
growing feeling they can push on to challenge
for a top-six slot.
Kieron Iveagh has boosted his squad
through the additions of Mark Connor, Ben
Carling and Gareth Gawne.
Ciaran McNulty and Neil Teare formed one
of the best strike partnerships in Manx football
and their goals will again be crucial.
Our prediction Top half
Following Castletown’s relegation to
Division Two, the onus is on RUSHEN (8th)
to restore some southern pride.
And the prospects of William Ward’s men
doing just that have been buoyed by a some
decent signings from neighbouring clubs.
If newcomers such as Tom Strivens, Aaron
Hawley, Chris McKenna and Noel Gill can gel
with the established players, Rushen could
have a say on the destination of honours.
Our prediction Top half
Young players will be given a chance to
shine at Ballacloan in what promises to be a
season of transition for RAMSEY (9th).
The club has been dealt a blow on the transfer
front, with Darren Jones, James Sayle,
Mark Hignett, Stephen Oates, Jogger Leece
and Andy Cleator all leaving.
William
Ward
RUSHEN
1, Laxey
2, Peel
3, St George’s
4, St Mary’s
R, Marown
R, Braddan
And with promising youngsters such as
Liam Perry, Lewis Qualtrough, Sam Critchley,
Paul Rowley, Matty Kelly and Robbie Collister
heading to university in September resources
will be stretched to the limit.
New signing John Roberts is a big plus and
will form the spine of the team with Andy
Perry, Ashley Webster, Tony Corlett, Steve
Cleator and Barry Sharpe.
Our prediction Fighting the drop
The one predictable thing about AYRE
(10th) last season was their unpredictability.
But the arrival of new manager Andy
Hudgeon has coincided with an influx of new
players.
James Sayle, Mark Hignett, Conal Hughes
and Darren Jones are all decent acquisitions
and should help propel the Tangerines further
up the table, despite the loss of marksman
Martin Torr to St George’s.
Mark Teare is also back after not featuring
last term and is as good as a new signing.
Our prediction Top half
Marown (11th) could face an uphill battle
to avoid becoming embroiled in another
scrap for survival.
After staying up by the narrowest of margins,
manager Paul Morley is hoping his side
can kick on towards mid-table respectability.
But they will have to do so without the services
of Martin Reilly and Juan Killip.
There is still plenty of talent and experience
at the club with a lot of the responsibility
falling on individuals such as Lee Cain, Paul
Bratty, Stephen Thatcher and Mark Dunn.
Our prediction Fighting the drop
The top team in Division Two for the bulk of
last season, no one can deny that UNION
MILLS (promoted champions) were worthy
winners of promotion.
Derek Cowley’s side’s strongest assets are up
front where Steven Quine has forged a formidable
partnership with David Thommeny.
But while Mills should have no problems
scoring goals they could have problems keeping
them out.
Our prediction Fighting the drop
Most pundits’ prediction to go straight back
to Division Two, it could be an arduous campaign
for BRADDAN (promoted).
Most frustrating for the Victoria Road side
has been the lack of transfer activity with the
only significant summer signings being
Matthew Palmer and Chris Jones.
There is some light at the end of the tunnel,
however, in the guise of David Kinrade who
scored more than 40 goals last season.
Our prediction Fighting the drop
