ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT September 23, 2005 ART EXHIBIT HONORING WOMEN’S CANCER JOURNEY COMES TO UNION STATION Union Station, Washington, D.C. will mark the next stop for a distinctive art exhibit, Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Woman’s Cancer Journey. The exhibit has been traveling the world for nine months. The exhibition, showcasing hundreds of pieces of art created by those touched by cancer, coincides with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month® (October). It includes entries from several greater-D.C.-area residents. Oncology on Canvas began as an international art competition for women diagnosed with cancer, their family, friends, and healthcare providers. The competition invited them to use art to express their struggles and successes in battling this disease. Oncology on Canvas attracted more than 400 submissions from 23 countries and culminated in a showing at London’s Royal College of Art in December 2004, marking the beginning of the world tour. The exhibit which runs from September 26 through October 16, 2005 can be viewed in the West Hall of Union Station located at 50 Massachusetts Avenue N.E., Washington, D.C. (Admission is free.) Oncology on Canvas is presented by Eli Lilly and Company, a world leader in cancer research and treatment, in partnership with the Maryland-based National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship and the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University. Eli Lilly and Company originally created the competition to recognize women diagnosed with cancer who have used art as a powerful emotional outlet, and to inspire others toward self-discovery and self-expression.
