OBJECTIVES<br />

• Provide training for teachers or other youth workers<br />

on “<strong>Take</strong> A <strong>St<strong>and</strong></strong>” curriculum<br />

• Work with school district to implement “<strong>Take</strong> A<br />

<strong>St<strong>and</strong></strong>” into the classroom as a curriculum<br />

enrichment activity<br />

• Provide support to the school for the program<br />

through processing evaluations, developing<br />

summaries of evaluations, recognition of participants<br />

<strong>and</strong> teachers, <strong>and</strong> more!

LEGISLATION (2005)<br />

• House Bill 283<br />

• Discipline Management Program to include<br />

prevention of <strong>and</strong> education concerning<br />

unwanted physical or verbal aggression, sexual<br />

harassment, <strong>and</strong> other forms of bullying in school,<br />

on school grounds, <strong>and</strong> in school vehicles


LEGISLATION (2005)<br />

• House Bill 121<br />

• Each school district shall adopt <strong>and</strong> implement a<br />

dating violence policy to be included in the district<br />

improvement plan. Implementation can be<br />

through safety planning, enforcement of<br />

protective orders, school-based alternatives to<br />

protective orders, training for teachers <strong>and</strong><br />

administrators, counseling for affected students,<br />

<strong>and</strong> awareness education for students <strong>and</strong><br />

parents.


LEGISLATION (2005)<br />

• Senate Bill 136<br />

– Establishes a curriculum within the <strong>Texas</strong><br />

School Safety Center to educate students<br />

about the dangers associated with social<br />

networking sites such as MySpace.Com.<br />

"This will arm students with the information<br />

they need to protect themselves against<br />

online predators," Senator Nelson said.


2011 LEGISLATION<br />

• SB 407 – Requires the <strong>Texas</strong> School Safety Center to develop<br />

programs that address “sexting” (sexually explicit material or<br />

photos sent by text message), <strong>and</strong> better responses to<br />

incidents of bullying <strong>and</strong> “cyberbullying” (bullying through<br />

the Internet).<br />

• SB 471 <strong>and</strong> HB 1942 – Starting in 2012-2013 – Exp<strong>and</strong>s the<br />

requirements on school districts to address bullying <strong>and</strong><br />

harassment, such as parental notification, programs for<br />

students <strong>and</strong> staff, providing counseling to bullies <strong>and</strong> victims<br />

<strong>and</strong> protecting those who report bullying. Charter schools<br />

also are required to adopt a policy on sexual abuse starting<br />

this year. .<br />

2011 LEGISLATION<br />

• HB 1942 – Exp<strong>and</strong>s the definition of bullying<br />

<strong>and</strong> allows school districts to transfer the bully<br />

to another classroom or campus within the<br />

district.<br />

• HB 1386 – Requires the development of<br />

intervention <strong>and</strong> prevention programs to<br />

train school staff to recognize potential suicide<br />

victims, to include those students targeted by<br />

bullies.<br />
