Mission Statement:
Parents United is a non-profit consortium of 16
Waukesha County special education departments
that have united to provide an educational community
service. The mission of the group is to present
timely and informative information, in a neutral
forum, for parents and professionals who work with
children. The lectures and presentations offered
each school year provide essential links, knowledge
and networking to the entire community for the
ultimate benefit of our students.
History:
Parents United began as a consortium of four
Waukesha County school districts in 2002-03
(Arrowhead, Kettle Moraine, Oconomowoc and
Pewaukee). Since that time, the districts of Hamilton,
Hartland/Lakeside, Lake Country, Menomonee Falls,
Merton, Mukwonago, Muskego/Norway, North Lake,
Richmond, Stone Bank, Swallow and Waukesha
have joined in providing high quality speakers on a
wide variety of educational topics. Open to parents
and professionals, the programs are held at the
Holiday Inn Conference Center in Pewaukee and are
offered both during the day and in the evening.
Programs are developed based on input from the
Special Education and Pupil Services directors
from the sixteen districts. The consortium hires a
part-time coordinator to arrange speakers, promote
the programs and oversee all activities. Edie Scott
is in her tenth year coordinating the activities
of Parents United. In 2009, Parents United
received a Wisconsin Council of Administrators of
Special Services (WCASS) Award for outstanding
contributions in the field of special education in
Southeastern Wisconsin.
Each year, more than 600 parents and professionals
attend the 2 1/2 hour sessions. Parents United
accommodates people from both outside agencies
and non-member districts, and considers this a
public service on behalf of all who are concerned
with special needs children.
What our past attendees are saying . . .
“What outstanding seminars based on current
issues that deal with special education!”
Gayle Best, L.D. Teacher
Horizon School, Pewaukee
“The topics presented through the Parents United
Consortium are always relevant and helpful.
The presenters are very knowledgeable and very
approachable. You can tell there is a common
goal of finding new and better ways to help our
children.”
Christy Herden, Parent
North Lake School District
“As an attendee of programs sponsored by Parents
United for many years, I’m continally impressed
with the quality of the presenters, variety of
programs, and the timely topics addressed. Much
of this success is due to the dedicated efforts
of Edie Scott, who has a special gift for finding
qualified, engaging presenters to share information
on pertinent topics. What a great resource for
families and educators!”
Sandy Mayernick, Tutor
“Parents United has been very beneficial for me
as a parent and professional. The programs are
loaded with prevailing and pertinent information
that informs, teaches and provides practical handson
tools to better understand and work with
children. I would recommend Parents United to all
who wish to remain current, positive and active in
meeting the needs of children of all ages.”
