Itinerary
Monday, Sept. 10: Departure. Today we depart our
home cities bound for Slovenia. Kollander can assist with
flight arrangements.
Tuesday, Sept. 11: Arrival
in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Upon arrival to Ljubljana’s
“Brnik” Airport, our group
will be met and transferred
to our hotel. Tonight enjoy
a special “Welcome”
dinner at local restaurant
near the famous Ljubljana
castle. (D)
Wednesday, Sept. 12: Ljubljana. Following breakfast,
our entire day is dedicated to enjoying Ljubljana, the
capital of Slovenia. We’ll begin with a morning walking
tour of the city, guided by our tour director. Visit the most
significant sights of the old city centre: the picturesque
central open-air market and the Three Bridges, both
designed by famous architect Joze Plecnik, Baroque
Town Hall, Robba’s Fountain and the Parliament. The
rest of this first full day is at leisure to explore more of
this fabulous city. Choose from a variety of restaurants,
or grab a seat at one of the lively cafe-bars lining the
Ljubljanica River! (B)
Thursday, Sept. 13: Excursion to Maribor and Ptuj.
After breakfast, our day is devoted to the Štajerska region.
Our first stop takes us to Slovenia’s second largest city,
Maribor, nestled in the foothills of Pohorje. We’ll sightsee
the majestic Gothic Cathedral, the lively main square and
discover the legends of the Franciscan Church. We will
make our way to the picturesque Town Square and visit
the romantic and legendary waterfront area known as
the Lent river bank to see the Old Vine House. To make
our visit here complete, we visit the Maribor underground
cellar to taste their delicious wines. Later it’s a short drive
through gorgeous countryside to the ancient Roman city
of Ptuj (pronounced pit-ooey). Ptuj is the oldest town in
Slovenia and charms even the most demanding visitors
with its fascinating history, and inviting cobblestone
streets. Upon arrival we will visit Ptuj castle and walk
through its remarkable medieval centre. We will end our
day with early dinner at local restaurant in Ptuj and travel
back to Ljubljana for overnight. (B, WT, D)
Friday, Sept. 14: Excursion to Dolenjska region.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and morning in Ljubljana. This
afternoon we board our coach and travel to Novo Mesto
to ride a wooden raft on the Krka River. While aboard,
our group will enjoy
entertainment and a
typical light lunch of
barley soup with a
glass of the famous
local wine, Cvicek.
After the ride, we
continue to Matjaž’s
Cottage - a 150-yearold
cottage, where
the whole family, wearing the national dress of Dolenjska
region. They will serve us a local specialty - “tarragon
cellar will follow. We end our day with a multimedia
presentation, “The Cviček Story”, and sample the
ingredients of Cviček along with a snack of buckwheat
bread with walnuts and home-made cheese. Return to
Ljubljana for overnight (B, L)
Saturday, Sept. 15: Ljubljana – Postojna – Lipica
– Portorož. Following breakfast, we depart Ljubljana
and make our first stop in Postojna. It has taken millions
of years for the clear waters of the River Pivka to create
t h i s u n d e rground
labyrinth of passages,
caverns and great
halls, decorated with
dripstones, translucent
curtains and pillars of
fascinating shapes
and colors. After a
ride by electrical train to the heart of the cave system,
experienced guides will accompany you on a walk through
the delicately-lit fairytale-like underground world. Next our
group travels to a local wine cellar to enjoy prosciutto and
vino! This afternoon we stop in the picturesque village of
Lipica, where for more than 400 years, beautiful, white
horses called “Lipizzaners” have been bred. A local guide
shows us around the estate – touring the stables and
pointing out different methods of the breeding and training
of these noble animals. We board our coach for check-in
at our hotel in Portorož and enjoy a free evening to try one
of the many seaside restaurants. You may also wish to
visit one of the casinos, or nightclubs! (B, WT)
Sunday, Sept. 16: Portorož. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast
and morning in Portorož, and bask in the views of the
Adriatic Sea! In the early afternoon, we depart for the
coastal city of Piran where we begin with lunch at a local
restaurant and afterwards, take in the sights. Piran
is tucked in between
the sea and a partly
preserved town wall
with seven mighty
towers - a symbol of the
past power and pride
of the city. The central
square boasts eminent
historical palaces, and
the birth house of the
famous composer Tartini. We walk up to the Church of
St. George to admire the ancient architecture and the
outstanding view of the town’s buildings, red roofs with
characteristic chimneys, and the stunning backdrop of the
bay. Returning through a maze of cobblestoned streets
and picturesque squares, we reach the main promenade,
and ending at the lighthouse. We return to Potrorož for
dinner on our own and a free evening. (B, L)
Monday, Sept. 17: Portorož – Bled. Following breakfast,
we have a late morning departure from Portorož to Bled.
Along the way we stop for lunch at local tourist farm,
and continue to Bled. Lake Bled is a jewel, pure and
simple. Nestled between two great mountain ranges -- the
Karavanke and the Julian Alps, which tumble into Slovenia
from Austria and Italy. Enjoy the remainder of the day in
this peaceful town. Take time to stroll and discover one
of the many local dinner venues along the lake. (B, L)
Tuesday, Sept. 18: Lake Bled. After breakfast, we
board a traditional
gondola, called
‘pletna’ and smoothly
glide over the lake
to visit Slovenia’s
only island. High
above the island sits
the Church of the
Assumption where
we will have an
opportunity to ring
the mysterious wishing bell. We return to the mainland for
a ride around the lake to the medieval castle perched high
on a cliff. Built over a thousand years ago, it was once
the unconquerable property of the Bishops of Brixen. We
will end our tour of Bled enjoying a cup of coffee or tea
and taste the famous Bled cream-cake. This evening we
enjoy an authentic Slovenian dinner and folklore show at
a local gostilna. (B, D)
Wednesday, Sept. 19: Bohinj Following breakfast, we
travel from Bled to the pristine valley of Lake Bohinj. The
largest Slovenian glacier lake lies in a tranquil valley in
Triglav National Park. We drive along the scenic lakeside
road and continue with a pleasant 20-minute hike
to the beautiful Savica Waterfall, which thunders down
the steep cliffs of Komarča, and allows us a rewarding
view of the lake. We will visit the Sheppard museum and
taste local cheeses.
Enjoy some time
to relax in Bohinj
(optional cable car
to Vogel available).
The remainder of
our day is at leisure
until our “Farewell”
dinner tonight at the
famous Avsenik Gostilna. Owned by Slovenian maestro
Slavko Avsenik, we will enjoy a delicious dinner and of
course, local music! (B, D)
Thursday, Sept. 20: Depart Ljubljana.Following
