View her house...
After Maud’s death in 1970 and that of her husband,
Everett Lewis, nine years later, the lovingly painted
home that had served as Maud’s primary canvas began
to deteriorate. In reaction, a group of concerned citizens
from the Digby area started the Maud Lewis Painted
House Society; their only goal was to save this valued
landmark. The cost of such an ambitious undetaking
proved to be too much for the dedicated group and,
in 1984 the house was sold to the Province of Nova
Scotia. The delicate process of conservation and
restoration began in 1996, and the fully restored
house now holds a place of honour on permanent
display at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
her art...
Maud Lewis began her artistic career by hand-drawing
Christmas cards that she sold to her husband’s customers
as he sold fish door to door. After success with this,
she started painting on various other surfaces such as
plank boards, cookie sheets, and eventually on every
available surface in their tiny home. Her work is typically
characterized by bright colours. All of Maud’s paintings
are quite small in scale and her technique consisted of first
drawing an outline and then applying paint directly out of
the tube, never mixing colours.
