Owner and proprietor Richard Reagan is himself legally blind, and he helps all his customers personally. Richard, who suffers from retinal degeneration, splits his time between Highland Park (Mondays and Thursdays) and Skokie locations. Like Richard, most of his customers are previously sighted. They like to see first hand what’s best for them.” Appointments are not necessary. “My goal is to have people leave my store in better shape than when they came in. They can be happier and maintain their lifestyles. I like to feel that I’ve helped.” Richard started his business in 2003. Before that, he spent more than 30 years with his family’s short-haul trucking business. “My father founded the company, and I grew it from eight to 47 trucks,” Richard says. “We had as many as 72 employees and handled non-perishable goods, making 300 to 400 deliveries a day in the six counties around Chicago.” After retiring four years ago, he went into the business of helping others to see more easily. Eye Can See Clearly’s product line includes magnifiers to enlarge images, both video (50x) and hand held (14x). Electronic magnifiers allow users to adjust the type font and background colors for their greatest comfort. He offers calculators and computer keyboards with large keys and displays, black measuring cups with white markings, voice-activated cell phones, talking medical monitors, clocks, watches, pedometers and thermometers, games and other devices. “We offer the low-vision customer over 250 high-quality products to help maximize their daily lifestyle and independence.” He gives tips on setting up individuals’ environments to maximize their vision. He notes, for example, that with lighting, diminishing glare is more helpful than increasing wattage. Update from Crossroads area The new retail and office center on Skokie Valley Road between Anton’s Fruit Ranch and Fuddruckers is being turned over to its tenants in late August with stores expected to be ready for business in October. Project manager Scott Emalfarb says there will be five businesses on the ground floor, with the southern-most 2,000-square-foot space available as we go to press. The other stores, going north, will be Body Empowered Fitness (www.bodyinpower.com); Green Dry Cleaner, the only environmentalist dry cleaner in the Chicago area; Day Spa, which will offer massages, facials, beauty products, manicures and pedicures; and Jimmy John’s gourmet sandwiches (www.jimmyjohns.com). On the second floor in the condominium offices—a growing trend in office space—will be, from south to north: • Perlmark Realty Corporation, a residential real estate investment, development and management firm involved primarily in the acquisition, development and operation of multi-family rental communities throughout the United States. • Pepper Development Services, an international construction and development consultant who has worked with the Trump Organization and other developers around the world. • Dr. Kathy Jean, an expanding periodontist practice. • Kelsey and Jo Orthodontics, a long-standing child- and familyoriented orthodontics practice moving to Highland Park. • Burack and Co., developers of houses, apartment buildings, office towers, retail space, hotels and mixed-use projects nationwide.
