Professor of Music History <strong>in</strong><br />

the Yale Department of Music,<br />

where he has taught s<strong>in</strong>ce 1999.<br />

He is a popular lecturer with the<br />

AYA educational travel program,<br />

and as on past AYA trips, jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

him on this tour will be his wife,<br />

Barbara. Professor Hepokoski is a<br />

specialist <strong>in</strong> operatic, symphonic,<br />

and chamber music from the<br />

eighteenth to the twentieth centuries,<br />

Professor James Hepokoski. with particular expertise <strong>in</strong> musical<br />

style and its political and cultural<br />

implications. He is the author or coauthor of seven books<br />

and dozens of essays on a variety of topics and has also<br />

given several lectures at L<strong>in</strong>coln Center and Carnegie Hall.<br />

At Yale he teaches a generous selection of music courses,<br />

among which are a much-praised survey of European music<br />

history as well as numerous sem<strong>in</strong>ars rang<strong>in</strong>g from Mozart<br />

and Beethoven to American Music, 1920s Blues, and Cole<br />

Porter songs. Students have remarked on his lively and<br />

enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g lectures, which illum<strong>in</strong>ate central aesthetic and<br />

historical po<strong>in</strong>ts embedded <strong>in</strong> the classical repertory. In<br />

2010 he was awarded Yale College’s Sidonie Miskim<strong>in</strong><br />

Clauss Prize for Teach<strong>in</strong>g Excellence <strong>in</strong> the Humanities. For<br />

this program, his presentations will provide a look at<br />

Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi’s works and <strong>in</strong>fluence:<br />
