requirement set by the Teachers Law, holding zhuanke<br />

Students learn about social morality <strong>and</strong> general politics, with a focus on “five loves”: love for the motherl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

people, labour, science <strong>and</strong> socialism.<br />

Students learn 2,500 common Chinese characters, M<strong>and</strong>arin Chinese, <strong>and</strong> the pinyin (Chinese romanization)<br />

system <strong>and</strong> the use of general dictionaries.<br />

Students learn the arithmetic of whole numbers, fractions <strong>and</strong> decimals, basic geometric forms, simple<br />

algebraic formulas, the abacus, logical <strong>and</strong> spatial thinking, <strong>and</strong> the application of mathematics to simple<br />

practical problems.<br />

Students acquire a basic underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> knowledge of social phenomena <strong>and</strong> the history, geography <strong>and</strong><br />

society of <strong>China</strong> <strong>and</strong> the world, learn to observe <strong>and</strong> adapt to social life <strong>and</strong> are educated in patriotism <strong>and</strong> the<br />

law.<br />

Students study common natural objects <strong>and</strong> phenomena <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong> how humans use, transform, protect <strong>and</strong><br />

explore Nature. They learn to make scientific observations, apply science to practical use <strong>and</strong> reject superstitions.<br />

Students acquire basic knowledge of physical education, hygiene <strong>and</strong> healthcare, develop skills in physical<br />

education, cultivate habits of exercise <strong>and</strong> hygiene <strong>and</strong> are trained in discipline, unity <strong>and</strong> endurance.<br />

Students learn Chinese musical masterpieces, gain some exposure to music of other countries <strong>and</strong> acquire basic<br />

knowledge of musical theory <strong>and</strong> performance.<br />

Students are exposed to excellent examples of fine art from <strong>China</strong> <strong>and</strong> other countries <strong>and</strong> acquire basic<br />

knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills of fine art.<br />
