BEYOND THE FIELD
Dear Readers:
I hope this letter finds you in good health and enjoying summer. Over the last year I have been repeatedly asked about the
possibility of a new outdoor athletic facility here at Buffalo State College. I thought I’d use this space to keep you abreast of what’s
been taking place – both locally and in Albany – relating to this very exciting issue.
As you may know, President Muriel A. Howard and Vice President for Student Affairs Hal D. Payne have been very active in
seeking a new outdoor stadium. I am pleased to report that their efforts, as well as the efforts of many others, have been rewarded.
This past fiscal year (2006 – 07) the State Legislature approved a $4 million appropriation for the Study and Design Phase of
a new multi-use stadium. Once that money was secured, the SUNY Construction Fund began an extensive national search for a firm
to meet this objective. The interview process to select the firm for the Study and Design Phase took place in January. We are hopeful
the selection process is completed sometime over the summer. Once completed meetings with the firm, Buffalo State College and the
Buffalo Public Schools would begin.
It is anticipated that the Study and Design Phase will take approximately one year from its inception. Meanwhile, interested
parties are working toward securing from the State the actual construction dollars necessary for the facility so that work can begin
once the Study and Design Phase is complete. Actual construction of the facility is expected to last 18 to 24 months.
While the news is indeed exciting, our work continues to ensure that the actual construction dollars will be made available
by the State Legislature and approved by the Governor. Our lobbying efforts, combined with a delegation of supportive Western New
York legislators, have certainly begun the overall process through the Study and Design Phase. With your continued help and encouragement
I am confident we will realize our vision of a new outdoor athletic facility for Buffalo and Buffalo State College.

Eric Hastings
Leah Bernal, a senior elementary education
major, won the SUNY Chancellor’s Award
for Student-Excellence. The Chancellor’s
Award is the highest award bestowed by
SUNY upon a student, recognizing model
students who have integrated academic
excellence and extracurricular involvement.
Bernal ranks third in school history with 106
career points.

PICKING UP THE PACE
TRACK & FIELD ATTAINS NATIONAL PROMINENCE...
Buffalo State jumped in the express lane this season as it
continued to travel the road to national prominence as the Bengals
featured five All-American performances, including two national
titles, and had individuals compete in nine NCAA Championship
events.
Under the guidance of New York State Women’s Coach of the
Year Eugene Lewis, Buffalo State posted dramatic improvements
in team results at the state and conference level as well. The men’s
team was fifth at both indoor championship meets and place fourth
at each of the outdoor meets. The women were fourth at each of
the indoor meets and were third and fifth at the outdoor SUNYAC
and New York State meets respectively.
Willie Hordge led the nationally recognized athletes as a threetime
All-American and a two-time national champion. After fi nishing
tied for fourth in the 55-meter dash at the indoor NCAA meet, the
junior capture national titles in the 100 and 200-meter dash events
at the outdoor championship. He was also a four-time SUNYAC
Champion, three-time State champ, and was named the SUNYAC
and New York State Outdoor Runner of the Year.
Junior Mario Hicks dominated the indoor circuit in the 55-meter
hurdles, winning SUNYAC and State titles, and earned All-America
honors, placing second at the NCAA meet. He also won the
SUNYAC and State outdoor titles in the 110-meter hurdles as was
part of the 4x100 meter relay teams that captured victories at each
meet.
Junior Jenelle Orosz was the other Bengal to gain national
recognition, becoming the first-ever Buffalo State female track and
fi eld All-American after placing sixth in the indoor high jump. She
also won SUNYAC and State indoor titles in the same event.
Freshman Toya Edwards was the most decorated Buffalo State
athlete. In all, she won five SUNYAC and six State Championships
and was named the indoor New York State Runner of the Year and
outdoor Runner and Rookie of the Year. She also competed at the
indoor NCAA Championships in the 55-meter dash (9th) and the
outdoor 200-meter dash.
Sophomore Lavonne Barfield joined Edwards, Tiffany Aaron
and Chelsea Prophet to win the outdoor 4x100-meter relay
SUNYAC and State Championships and set a New York State
record. Barfield also won the indoor State long jump title and
competed at the outdoor NCAA Championships in the same event.
Tenisha Jones was also impressive as a freshman, winning
outdoor SUNYAC and State triple jump crowns and competed at
the NCAA Championships. Fellow freshman Candace Aaron
also exploded onto the scene, competing at the NCAA Intdoor
Championships in the hammer throw.
