PICKING UP THE PACE<br />
TRACK & FIELD ATTAINS NATIONAL PROMINENCE...<br />
<strong>Buffalo</strong> <strong>State</strong> jumped in the express lane this season as it<br />
continued to travel the road to national prominence as the Bengals<br />
featured five All-American performances, including two national<br />
titles, and had individuals compete in nine NCAA Championship<br />
events.<br />
Under the guidance of New York <strong>State</strong> Women’s Coach of the<br />
Year Eugene Lewis, <strong>Buffalo</strong> <strong>State</strong> posted dramatic improvements<br />
in team results at the state and conference level as well. The men’s<br />
team was fifth at both indoor championship meets and place fourth<br />
at each of the outdoor meets. The women were fourth at each of<br />
the indoor meets and were third and fifth at the outdoor SUNYAC<br />
and New York <strong>State</strong> meets respectively.<br />
Willie Hordge led the nationally recognized athletes as a threetime<br />
All-American and a two-time national champion. After fi nishing<br />
tied for fourth in the 55-meter dash at the indoor NCAA meet, the<br />
junior capture national titles in the 100 and 200-meter dash events<br />
at the outdoor championship. He was also a four-time SUNYAC<br />
Champion, three-time <strong>State</strong> champ, and was named the SUNYAC<br />
and New York <strong>State</strong> Outdoor Runner of the Year.<br />
Junior Mario Hicks dominated the indoor circuit in the 55-meter<br />
hurdles, winning SUNYAC and <strong>State</strong> titles, and earned All-America<br />
honors, placing second at the NCAA meet. He also won the<br />
SUNYAC and <strong>State</strong> outdoor titles in the 110-meter hurdles as was<br />
part of the 4x100 meter relay teams that captured victories at each<br />
meet.<br />
Junior Jenelle Orosz was the other Bengal to gain national<br />
recognition, becoming the first-ever <strong>Buffalo</strong> <strong>State</strong> female track and<br />
fi eld All-American after placing sixth in the indoor high jump. She<br />
also won SUNYAC and <strong>State</strong> indoor titles in the same event.<br />
Freshman Toya Edwards was the most decorated <strong>Buffalo</strong> <strong>State</strong><br />
athlete. In all, she won five SUNYAC and six <strong>State</strong> Championships<br />
and was named the indoor New York <strong>State</strong> Runner of the Year and<br />
outdoor Runner and Rookie of the Year. She also competed at the<br />
indoor NCAA Championships in the 55-meter dash (9th) and the<br />
outdoor 200-meter dash.<br />
Sophomore Lavonne Barfield joined Edwards, Tiffany Aaron<br />
and Chelsea Prophet to win the outdoor 4x100-meter relay<br />
SUNYAC and <strong>State</strong> Championships and set a New York <strong>State</strong><br />
record. Barfield also won the indoor <strong>State</strong> long jump title and<br />
competed at the outdoor NCAA Championships in the same event.<br />
Tenisha Jones was also impressive as a freshman, winning<br />
outdoor SUNYAC and <strong>State</strong> triple jump crowns and competed at<br />
the NCAA Championships. Fellow freshman Candace Aaron<br />
also exploded onto the scene, competing at the NCAA Intdoor<br />
Championships in the hammer throw.<br />
