BEYOND THE FIELD Dear Readers: I hope this letter finds you in good health and enjoying summer. Over the last year I have been repeatedly asked about the possibility of a new outdoor athletic facility here at Buffalo State College. I thought I’d use this space to keep you abreast of what’s been taking place – both locally and in Albany – relating to this very exciting issue. As you may know, President Muriel A. Howard and Vice President for Student Affairs Hal D. Payne have been very active in seeking a new outdoor stadium. I am pleased to report that their efforts, as well as the efforts of many others, have been rewarded. This past fiscal year (2006 – 07) the State Legislature approved a $4 million appropriation for the Study and Design Phase of a new multi-use stadium. Once that money was secured, the SUNY Construction Fund began an extensive national search for a firm to meet this objective. The interview process to select the firm for the Study and Design Phase took place in January. We are hopeful the selection process is completed sometime over the summer. Once completed meetings with the firm, Buffalo State College and the Buffalo Public Schools would begin. It is anticipated that the Study and Design Phase will take approximately one year from its inception. Meanwhile, interested parties are working toward securing from the State the actual construction dollars necessary for the facility so that work can begin once the Study and Design Phase is complete. Actual construction of the facility is expected to last 18 to 24 months. While the news is indeed exciting, our work continues to ensure that the actual construction dollars will be made available by the State Legislature and approved by the Governor. Our lobbying efforts, combined with a delegation of supportive Western New York legislators, have certainly begun the overall process through the Study and Design Phase. With your continued help and encouragement I am confident we will realize our vision of a new outdoor athletic facility for Buffalo and Buffalo State College. Sincerely, Jerry S. SEASONS IN THE BOOKS MEN’S BASKETBALL Made its 27th SUNYAC playoff appearance in 28 years...Finished 12-13 overall and 7-9 in conference play...Bubba Wood led the Bengals with 12.6 points-per-game and 108 assists...Dion Mozelle averaged 11.7 points and 5.8 rebounds-pergame...No. 7 seed in SUNYAC tournament, lost 82-72 at No. 2 and eventual champion Plattsburgh in quarterfi nals... 1,000 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Finished 7-18 overall and 4-12 in SUNYAC action...Jacey Brooks led the team as a Second Team All- SUNYAC selection and averaged 14.4 points and 6.1 rebounds-pergame...Darnika Moseley had 12.8 points and 8.2 boards-per-contest... On Jan. 9 at Cortland, both Brooks and Moseley scored the 1,000th point of their respective careers. Moseley went on to fi nish her career ranked 8th on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,078, and Jacey fi nished fourth in school history with 1,219 points... WOMEN’S HOCKEY Improved by two wins from a year ago, fi nishing 7-15-1 overall and 5-9 in ECAC West play under fi rst-year Head Coach Rob Burke...Juniors Shannon Anesetti and Mary Cohen were both named second team all-conference...Anesetti posted a 2.49 GAA and a .924 save percentage, and Cohen tallied seven points from the blue line... Melissa Jeckovich fi nished as the leading scorer with 10 points... Shannon Anesetti On Feb. 9, the Bengals defeated Cortland, 72-69, in the Sports Arena, as Buffalo State joined select company with win No. 1,000 since the program turned varsity in 1926...Buffalo State is 1,002-684 (.594) with 17 SUNYAC titles and 18 NCAA Playoff appearances... Randy Smith led the Bengals to the 1970 Final Four and is the school’s all-time leading scorer (1,712) and rebounder (1,049). Jacey Brooks Darnika Moseley SWIMMING & DIVING Men’s and women’s team both had winning records in the same season for the fi rst time...Men were 4-3 and placed seventh of nine at the SUNYAC Championships...Women were 4-3-1 and also fi nished seventh at the conference meet... Freshman Miranda Warner set a new school record in the 100 back and joined Caitlin Morsch, Megan Farrell and Karli Bender on the record-setting 200 medley relay team...Eric Hastings was second team All-SUNYAC, placing third in the 1,650 free.... WOMEN’S LACROSSE Opened the season by matching a school record with sevenconsecutive victories...Also matched a program best with 10 total wins, fi nishing 10-5 overall and 2-5 in SUNYAC play...Freshman Stephanie Georgopoulos and junior Shantel Ackley led the Bengals with 48 and 47 points respectively...Juniors Ashley Parker and Katie Lyons were both recognized as second team All- SUNYAC... Dick Bihr led Buffalo State to 449 victories from 1979 until 2005. Eric Hastings Leah Bernal, a senior elementary education major, won the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student-Excellence. The Chancellor’s Award is the highest award bestowed by SUNY upon a student, recognizing model students who have integrated academic excellence and extracurricular involvement.
