14. CONSTRAINTS<br />

Like any other package of practices, the <strong>sewage</strong>-fed fish farming suffers from<br />

constraints related to environmental, legal, financial and social factors.<br />

14.1 Environmental contstraints<br />

Sewage water utilization in agriculture and aquaculture has certain inherent<br />

draw-back. They are more pronounced where raw <strong>sewage</strong> is directly utilised by the<br />

fish farmers for raising carps. Such practices may cause fish mortality due to following<br />

reasons :<br />

(a) Sudden increase in organic load of the pond and subsequent depletion of<br />

dissolved oxygen.<br />

(b) Rise in atmospheric temperature ca<strong>using</strong> increased rate of bilogical degradation<br />

of the putricible organic material and subsequent depletion of dissolved<br />

oxygen ..<br />

(c) Lowering photosynthetic actIvIty through prolonged cluody day causmg<br />

depletion of dissolved oxygen.<br />
