Careers Brief - <strong>English</strong> DipHE<br />

Overview<br />

The DipHE <strong>in</strong> <strong>English</strong> offers you the opportunity for progression onto an Honours degree<br />

programme and direct job entry, although the advantages of be<strong>in</strong>g an Honours graduate can<br />

be significant for many careers.<br />

<strong>English</strong> graduates go <strong>in</strong>to a wide variety of occupations. The excellent written and verbal<br />

skills you can develop on your course, <strong>in</strong> addition to other employability skills (such as<br />

organis<strong>in</strong>g, teamwork<strong>in</strong>g, IT, work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dependently and to deadl<strong>in</strong>es) are of value to most<br />

employers.<br />

Further Study<br />

On successful completion of the DipHE, you may enter the f<strong>in</strong>al year of the BA (Hons)<br />

<strong>English</strong> at the University of W<strong>in</strong>chester to achieve an Honours degree. Go to<br />

Admissions Service). Use the university/college l<strong>in</strong>ks for course details. Entry po<strong>in</strong>t could<br />

depend on the overlap between courses, your grades and experience but could be the f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

year.


You will need to use UCAS to apply for courses. Contact the Course Tutor of your chosen<br />

course to f<strong>in</strong>d out your position, before you make your formal application.<br />

Alternatively, you could consider 'topp<strong>in</strong>g up' your DipHE to Honours through distance<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g with the Open University. You could be awarded up to 240 credits and then only<br />

need 120 credits of OU study at level 3, to achieve an Honours degree. This would also give<br />

you the opportunity to take up employment. Go to www.open.ac.uk/ to search<br />

undergraduate courses and credit transfer.<br />

With a good Honours degree (First or 2.1), you may progress onto an appropriate higher level<br />

Masters and/or PhD doctorate. This could be to develop your area of study to a more <strong>in</strong>depth<br />

academic level or ga<strong>in</strong> other specialist tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
