NMR TUBE GLASS FORMULATIONS 

Depending on your application requirements, you can choose between our “Select Series” or “Standard Series” 

NMR tubes. Both types are manufactured using state-of-the-art technology to maintain total quality in meeting 

stringent concentricity and camber specifications. Below you will find a brief description of the two types of glass 

materials commonly used in making NMR tubes, and important physical characteristics to consider when 

choosing a sample tube for an experiment. 

“Select Series” NMR tubes are manufactured out of 

ASTM Type 1 Class A glass, commonly referred to as 

Pyrex® 7740 (Corning), Duran® (Schott Glas), or 

Kimax® KG-33 (Kimble) glass. Key properties that make 

this glass type desirable for NMR are its high degree of 

thermal shock resistance and low expansion coefficient. 

This allows for a greater margin of safety from breakage 

when used in variable temperature applications and 

freeze/thaw cycling, or under any other application 

where large temperature variations are required in the 

experiment. Each NMR tube is checked for concentricity 

and camber specifications utilizing the latest computer 

technology. 

STANDARD SERIES 

“Standard Series” NMR tubes are manufactured out of 

ASTM Type 1 Class B glass, commonly referred to as N- 

51A. Applications that are suited for using this type of 

glass are routine NMR where samples are run under room 

temperatures with no thermal gradients. It is therefore 

not recommended to fuse this glass with standard 

vacuum manifolds and the like, since these are generally 

made out of Type 1 Class A glass. Each NMR tube is 

checked for concentricity and camber specifications 

utilizing the latest computer technology.

TUBES 

SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED 

FOR HIGH-RESOLUTION NMR 

Norell has added a new line of ASTM Type 1 Class A 

borosilicate glass NMR tube, compatible with Pyrex®, 

Duran® and Kimax® to our full line of products 

specifically designed for high-resolution NMR. Our new 

tubes are manufactured using a Norell-developed stateof-the-art 

process to meet exacting specifications for 

camber and concentricity. 

Whether you are spinning or non-spinning, doing 

structure determination of small molecules or 

determining the 3-D structure of a membrane protein, 

our new line of NMR tubes offer unsurpassed 

performance, reproducibility and reliability over all other 

brands. 

You will immediately notice improved resolution when 

calculating j-coupling constants or when acquiring data 

close to your spectrometer’s noise level. Improved 

shimming times and peak symmetry go without 

question, equating to shorter analysis times and 

improved sample throughput. Of course, with our new 

tubes, there are no worries with freeze/thaw degassing 

or high-temperature studies.

Typical absorbance (ABS) is between 0.5
