Introduction:<br />
If you work with children and adolescents, are<br />
<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> child development research,<br />
psychoanalytic ideas and would like to develop<br />
your observational skills, then this <strong>in</strong>troductory<br />
course might be of <strong>in</strong>terest to you.<br />
<strong>Introductory</strong> Course Details:<br />
From 6 th June 2013 we are offer<strong>in</strong>g a five week<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g session between 1.45pm and 6pm on<br />
Thursdays <strong>in</strong> the Academic Department <strong>in</strong> Mulberry<br />
House Alder Hey Hospital.<br />
There is a maximum <strong>in</strong>take of 5 applicants for the<br />
course and each sem<strong>in</strong>ar is led by an experienced<br />
Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist.<br />
The course consists of three sem<strong>in</strong>ars 1¼ hours <strong>in</strong><br />
each of the five days, based on the Tavistock<br />
<strong>Psychoanalytic</strong> <strong>Observational</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> model.<br />
The course is relevant to anyone work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
children, young people and their families <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g;<br />
teachers, psychologists, and child and adolescent<br />
psychiatrists, social workers, residential workers and<br />
occupational therapists, nurses, nursery nurses and<br />
allied professional discipl<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
Postgraduate <strong>Psychoanalytic</strong><br />
<strong>Observational</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> at Alder Hey:<br />
The Masters/PG Diploma <strong>in</strong> psychoanalytic<br />
observational studies (M7L) <strong>in</strong> <strong>Liverpool</strong> is offered by<br />
NSCAP <strong>in</strong> partnership with the Tavistock and Portman<br />
NHS Foundation Trust and the University of East<br />
London with support from the Education Centre,<br />
Alder Hey. The programme has been successful s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

This will <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
Theory Sem<strong>in</strong>ar (Child Development Research<br />
and Key Applied <strong>Psychoanalytic</strong> Papers)<br />
This is a read<strong>in</strong>g sem<strong>in</strong>ar with all participants<br />
expected to read theoretical papers and contribute to<br />
a group discussion<br />
Young Child Observation Sem<strong>in</strong>ar<br />
Participants will be supported to organise arrang<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
one-off observation of a young child between the<br />
ages of 2-4 years for one hour. This is then written up<br />
<strong>in</strong> as much detail as possible after the observation for<br />
presentation to the sem<strong>in</strong>ar group.<br />
Work Discussion Sem<strong>in</strong>ar<br />
Participants will br<strong>in</strong>g observational material from<br />
their work sett<strong>in</strong>g for group discussion<br />
We will accept applications on a first come first<br />
served basis but aim to run this short course regularly<br />
so will operate a wait<strong>in</strong>g list if you are not successful<br />
<strong>in</strong> ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a place this time round.<br />
There will be a prelim<strong>in</strong>ary meet<strong>in</strong>g for all students to<br />
discuss course requirements for the different<br />
sem<strong>in</strong>ars.<br />
All successful applicants will be required to provide a<br />
current valid enhanced DBS disclosure.<br />

We are able to offer this course at a substantially<br />
reduced fee thank to fund<strong>in</strong>g from the Health<br />
Education North West, which is the local Education<br />
and Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Board (LETB) for the region.<br />
