Introduction:
If you work with children and adolescents, are
interested in child development research,
psychoanalytic ideas and would like to develop
your observational skills, then this introductory
course might be of interest to you.
Introductory Course Details:
From 6 th June 2013 we are offering a five week
training session between 1.45pm and 6pm on
Thursdays in the Academic Department in Mulberry
House Alder Hey Hospital.
There is a maximum intake of 5 applicants for the
course and each seminar is led by an experienced
Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist.
The course consists of three seminars 1¼ hours in
each of the five days, based on the Tavistock
Psychoanalytic Observational Studies model.
The course is relevant to anyone working with
children, young people and their families including;
teachers, psychologists, and child and adolescent
psychiatrists, social workers, residential workers and
occupational therapists, nurses, nursery nurses and
allied professional disciplines.
Postgraduate Psychoanalytic
Observational Studies at Alder Hey:
The Masters/PG Diploma in psychoanalytic
observational studies (M7L) in Liverpool is offered by
NSCAP in partnership with the Tavistock and Portman
NHS Foundation Trust and the University of East
London with support from the Education Centre,
Alder Hey. The programme has been successful since

This will include:
Theory Seminar (Child Development Research
and Key Applied Psychoanalytic Papers)
This is a reading seminar with all participants
expected to read theoretical papers and contribute to
a group discussion
Young Child Observation Seminar
Participants will be supported to organise arranging a
one-off observation of a young child between the
ages of 2-4 years for one hour. This is then written up
in as much detail as possible after the observation for
presentation to the seminar group.
Work Discussion Seminar
Participants will bring observational material from
their work setting for group discussion
We will accept applications on a first come first
served basis but aim to run this short course regularly
so will operate a waiting list if you are not successful
in gaining a place this time round.
There will be a preliminary meeting for all students to
discuss course requirements for the different
seminars.
All successful applicants will be required to provide a
current valid enhanced DBS disclosure.
Funding
We are able to offer this course at a substantially
reduced fee thank to funding from the Health
Education North West, which is the local Education
and Training Board (LETB) for the region.
