It is difficult to describe my emotions as I prepare to go
from fulltime pastor to half-time. It seems like such a short time
ago that Margi and I and “the kids” came to St. Peter to begin
ministering with you. The last twenty-four years seem to have
passed in the blink of an eye! What a perfect definition Paul
gives in his letter to the Philippians when he says,
“In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because
of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.”
You and I have truly partnered in the Gospel “from the first day” as Paul says, and
for you and me that day would specifically be Sept.1, 1988. I am truly glad that our ministry
together is in no way coming to a conclusion. Because of continued good health and
also because you have called Pastor Mark to be your new Senior Pastor, I look forward to
many years of partnering together with you in ministry. I suppose now that I’m your new
half-time Pastor it will not be a conclusion but a half-conclusion?
As our congregational family approaches the time of “Calling Two NEW Pastors”,
our Pastoral Transition Team has been meeting to work out the details. They have been in
contact with staff from our Northern Illinois District to make sure everything is done (as the
Bible says) decently and in good order.
First their work and plans will be given to the Church Board for analysis, they will
bring everything to a Congregational Voters Meeting sometime later in July. They will (as
required by the Constitution) give two notices to the congregation before that meeting, to
give everyone an opportunity to be present. Then, pending voter approval of the official
call documents themselves, the congregation will hold an installation service as Pastor
Mark and I would be installed into our new “calls” on Sunday, August 5 during the regular
morning service. We are happy to have Circuit Counselor, Rev. David Andermann, to do
the preaching and the installation that morning.
If you would like to contact any of the Pastoral Transition Team, they are:
Book ReMarks
A book I pulled from the shelf
out of curiosity is the Book of the
Month for July. This oldie,
(published in 1930) is entitled,
“Light in the Dark Belt.”
It is the autobiography of Rose
Young, born in 1890 into the
African-American community of
Alabama. The abject poverty and illiteracy of her people
tugged at her heart and she set out, just she and her Lord,
to do something about it; namely to start a school. White
benefactors supported her, but it was not until she garnered
the support of the Lutheran Church, that good
things began to happen. Bad things happened too. Black
pastors resented the Lutherans and stirred up much trouble
for Rosa.
Despite persecution, ill health, and little money she persevered.
I found the history of Alabama, and Lutheranism
in the early 20 th century as a background to the inspiring
story of one of God’s faithful, to be interesting reading.
Perhaps you will too.
