Getting from Candles to Groundhogs:
Last week we celebrated the tradition of Ground Hog Day. Many of
you may not know that this originated from Catholic traditions.
Candlemas is one our oldest feast days. It is also known as the Presentation
of Jesus at the Temple, Feast of the Purification of the Virgin,
and the Meeting of the Lord. When, per custom, Mary presented
the baby Jesus at the temple, the priest Simeon prayed that Jesus was
“...a light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people
Israel...” Christ was the “light” of the world.
By the 11th century the custom had developed in the West of blessing
candles on the Feast of the Presentation. The candles were then
lit, and a procession took place through the darkened church while
the Canticle of Simeon was sung. This became known as Candlemas.
During the last quarter of the Fourth Century, the Roman Church designated
February 2nd the Feast of the Presentation and Candlemas.
It became the custom for clergy to bless candles and distribute them
to the people in the dark of Winter. A lighted candle was placed in
each window of the home.
For the early Christians in Europe, superstition held that if the weather
was sunny on Candlemas Day, February 2nd, the second half of
Winter (6 more weeks) would be stormy and cold. This tradition was
brought to the United States by the Germans in Pennsylvania and became
Ground Hog Day.
Another tradition...
We will be doing a blessing at all masses this weekend in honor of the
Feast of St. Blaise. Please read the Liturgy Notes in this Bulletin which
explain the significance of St. Blaise and the remarkable stories that
led to this feast day.
“Pilgrims in a Pilgrim Church”
The experience of a JOURNEY can be seen in the Catholic tradition
as a mystical compass for seeking and arriving towards a goal. It can
MOntHLy FOOD DrIVe
Loaves and Fishes goal is simple - to feed the hungry. Each week over
50 families from Summit and its surrounding towns rely on Loaves
and Fishes to help with their weekly grocery needs. No one is ever
turned away and our numbers are growing. We attempt to supply
dietary staples and a few extras to help make the week a little easier.
We rely on food and monetary donations from local groups and
our parish families. The generosity of St Teresa’s parishioners has
allowed us to help many. Any and all donations are welcome- a can of
soup, stew or tuna , a case of tomato sauce or cereal. We will begin
a monthly food drive - collecting groceries the first Sunday of each
month. We ask you only to bring your donation to the vestibule of
the church. Every item will be stocked on our shelves, packed by our
STEWARDShIP
“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted
place, where he prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go on to the nearby
villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I
come.’” - Mark 1:35, 38
Through today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship.
Jesus gives His time to doing all that God wishes - healing the
sick and preaching. Yet Jesus also makes time to be alone in prayer.
It is only through prayer, through spending time with God, that any of
us can find the strength to do all that God wishes us to do. Be sure to
find time this week to be with God.
Liturgy Notes
Story of Saint Blaise
There is a great tradition surrounding the devotion to Saint Blaise,
much of which may be legend. We do know that he was born in Armenia
and was a physician probably from a wealthy family before he
became Bishop in his episcopal city of Sebastea. He was martyred
there in 316. The legendary Acts of St. Blaise were written 400 years
later which contains stories of his life and faith. Blaise was a good
bishop, working hard to encourage the spiritual and physical health of
his people. Although the Edict of Toleration (311), granting freedom
of worship in the Roman Empire, was already five years old, persecution
still raged in Armenia. Blaise was apparently forced to flee to
Mount Argeus in the back country. There people came to him for spiritual
advice and healing. The governor of Cappadocia, Agricola, was
sent by the Roman Emperor Licinius to persecute the Christians. One
day hunters were sent out to capture wild animals for their games in
the arena. They came upon the cave of St. Blaise and found wolves,
tigers, bears, and lions waiting for Blaise to finish his prayers. Blaise
was arrested, and they attempted to make him renounce his faith and
sacrifice to pagan idols.
During his imprisonment he was said to have cured a child who had a
fish bone caught in his throat. From this came the tradition of invoking
St. Blaise for maladies of the throat.
He was tortured to deny his faith. Once he was suspended from a
tree, and his flesh torn with iron combs or rakes. From this story English
wool combers, who used similar iron combs, took Blaise as their
patron saint. Blaise was thrown into a lake. He walked upon the water
and invited his persecutors to join him there. He said that they could
then show the power of the gods they were urging him to honor. The
pagans took up the challenge and were all drowned. Blaise was told
by an angel to return to dry land to receive martyrdom, and he was
beheaded on the shore under Agricola’s order.
It does not matter that some of these stories may seem the stuff of
legend: they teach us lessons. You might want to meditate upon
these yourself or talk about them with your children. They teach us
to persevere in times of distress and that with God’s help we can get
through anything. Our tradition of the blessing of throats may bring
physical and spiritual healing. We also learn that we are stewards of
those wild creatures and must protect them and their environment
from harm.
DIA SANTO/FIESTA ORACION Y/O HISTORIA
Febrero Lourdes tes puntos:
