Experim entation is recom m ended, and you 

can alw ays tap an extra h ole in th e crank for 

th e pivot assem bly closer to th e m otor, if it 

becom es necessary to restrict m ovem ent. 

For attach m ent to th e m otor sh aft, you 

w i lneed to dri ltw o h oles in th e crank arm , 

spaced to accept both legs of your sm a lUbolt. 

It is im portant to m ak e sure th at w h en 

th e bolt is attach ed to th e m otor sh aft, th e 

alum inum does not drag against th e platform 

m em bers. Th e clam p attach es as sh ow n at 

righ t. 

Note th at th e alum inum stock is tw isted 

9 0 degrees so th at th e w ide dim ension of th e 

end h olding th e pivot assem bly is para lelto 

th e ground. Use a vise and Vise Grip pliers to 

do th is. You w i lfind th at th e bar bends 

relatively easily.

Th e Fram e 

Th e structure of th e m otor platform is 

constructed from th e 1-inch angled 

alum inum stock m entioned previously. Th e 

finish ed platform is q uite rigid, and can 

h andle a substantialam ount of w eigh t. Th e 

tw o 4-foot sections of th is stock sh ould be 

cut up as fo low s: Cut one 20-inch section 

from each bar. Cut 2 14-inch length s from 

th e rem ains of th e first bar, and a 16-inch and 

12-inch section from th e rem ains of th e 

second. Th e 'leftover segm ents' are sh ow n 

above, m inus th e tw o 20-inch sections th at 

w i lform th e m otor m ount. 

Th e m otor m ounts, as sh ow n below , to 

th e tw o 20-inch parts. Th e 16-inch front 

m em ber and 12-inch rear m em ber are sh ow n

& M anuevers w ere a resounding success! 

W e h ad eigh teen people (off and on) 

cam ping and playing w ith us. W e learned 

a lot about Lazer Tag (th ank s Ch ief!) and 

about w h at to do and not to do w h en 

arranging cam ping for so m any people. 

I w ould lik e to tak e th is opportunity to 

th ank Nancy Begin and h er M om Cynth ia 

for th e site. It w as rem ote, but sti lw ith in 

m ost ce lcoverage! W e h ad a w onderful 

tim e and it w ould not h ave been possible 

w ith out th ese tw o. Robin, I understand,

It seem s as if Autum n is upon us. Th e 

w eath er is getting ch i ly, no m ore pool 

parties, so ... let's plan on doing som e

board gam es, card gam es, etc. I 

understand th at th e Science and 

Engineering officers also h ave a bunch of 

Star Trek gam es, sounds lik e a gam e day

Greetings from Edgar Station! 

Sum m er h as fina ly com e and gone, 

tak ing th e blistering h eat, and soon I' lbe 

able to com plain again about freezing m y 

tailoff as I w alk th e 150 m eters to th e 

m ess h a l. So far, alth ough th ere h ave 

been a few big fires, w e h aven't seen th e 

sam e sort of h uge fires w e saw last year. 

Upon reflection, m aybe it's sim ply 

because so m uch burned last year th at 

th ere w asn't th at m uch th at could be set 

aligh t th is year. 

For now , tem peratures are m oderate, 

th e w ildlife is busy preparing for th e 

w inter, and th e local farm ers are 

preparing th em selves for th e h arvest. Th e 

river near m y q uarters is q uite low now , 

in spite of h eavy rains a few days ago, 

and can easily be w aded across, if you 

don't m ind getting a bit ch i led. After a l, 

th e m ountains th at river springs from 

aren't th at far aw ay, and snow m elt, by 

definition, is not too w arm . 

O n th e good new s side of th ings, in 

addition to th e surprise announcem ent of 

m y prom otion to E8 in last m onth 's 

Com m Link , I found th at I h ave been

bum ped an additionalgrade to M aster 

Gunnery Sergeant (E9 ). I am touch ed and 

h onored at being prom oted to th e h igh est 

enlisted grade, especia ly since I w as 

content to rem ain a GSGT. Th e rank of 

Gunnery Sergeant (and M aster Gunny) is 

iconic to th e M arines, and I w i ldo m y 

best to carry on in th e best traditions of 

th at proud rank . O f course, th at m eans I 

rea ly need to get a set of Class A's now , 

even if th ere's no place to w ear th em h ere 

at Edgar Station. 

I w ish I h ad been able to attend th e 

M arine M uster, but m y duties k ept m e 

h ere. I appreciated being able to see 

pictures of th e event, th ough . Th e 

accom odations look ed a bit on th e rough 

and prim itive side, w h ich m eans I'd feel 

lik e I never left th is place. From th e 

pictures, it look s lik e our M arines h ave 

tak en Boats' (CPO Sturgeon) lesson to 

h eart, and rem em bered th at w ith th e 

practice 'taggers', you h ide th e w eapon, 

th en yourself. It did strik e m e as odd, 

th ough . I saw severalpictures of people 

doing th eir levelbest to 'blend in', w h ile 

carrying a brigh tly colored 'tagger' th at 

practica ly glow s in th e dark . Sti l, it 

look ed lik e fun, and I h ope m y duties w i l

rem ain fu ly operational th rough m ore 

conventional m eans, and Prigal and I 

h ave been search ing th rough th e local 

forces to form a unit to use th em . Given 

th e q uality of th ose forces, it's been a 

rough job, Th e oth er day, Prigalstorm ed 

into m y office, and proclaim ed "Gunny, I 

sw ear, som etim es w ork ing w ith th ese 

idiots, I feel lik e I'm trying to m ak e 

diam onds out of cow m anure."

getting a bit nervous. Prigaljust look s

H ow ever, just th is m orning, w e received 

w ord to expect a delivery from New 

M across (h om e of th e SFM C M ech a 

R& D facility) next w eek . Now in 

addition to being nervous, I'm curious. 

O n th e bad new s side of th ings, Ensign 

Kendra took a sh uttle out for a test fligh t 

tw o w eek s ago, and never returned. Th e 

Caitians launch ed a series of th orough 

search sw eeps for h er, but so far h ave 

found no sign of h er or h er sh uttle. 

Everyone at Edgar Station is h oping for 

th e best, but fearing for th e w orst, 

especia ly since w e w ould expect an 

accident to leave som e debris or oth er 

trace of h er sh uttle. Even Prigalseem s 

disturbed and dow ncast. I ask ed h im if h e 

th ough t w h oever w as beh ind th e Ph alanx 

sh ipm ent m igh t h ave h ad som eth ing to do 

w ith it, and h e said "Not even th ey w ould 

risk annoying a Caitian figh ter sq uadron,

Ensign Kendra is currently listed as 

"M IA", and h ope is fading. Added to th e 

disappearance of th e USS C.M . Russe l, I 

find m yself regretting m y jok es about

Prigalout of trouble. W e're a long w ay 

from th e nearest Starfleet sh ip h ere, and 

th e station ch ief is understandably 

w orried. Prigaland I h ave been w ork ing 

on furth er upgrading th e station's defense 

and detection system s, and I w i l be 

m eeting w ith localofficials in th e next 

few days. 

I h ave recently resum ed m y studies 

th rough SFM C TRACO M (Training 

Com m and), and w ould lik e to tak e th is 

tim e to encourage a lM arines to continue 

th eir studies. Currently, I am w ork ing on 

m y final papers for m y Infantry and 

M ech a courses of study, and w i lpublish 

th em h ere w h en th ey are done and 

graded. Th e courses offered th rough 

TRACO M are genera ly painless, and 

h elp round out your appreciation for th e 

back ground of th e Corps. W e a lk now in

Before reporting for h is assignm ent w ith VM F- 

1 at Quantico, Virginia, h e took advantage of h is 

30-day to return h om e, and reconcile w ith h is 

w ife H elene, w h o becam e pregnant w ith th eir 

second ch ild. In th ose days M arine aviators w ere 

req uired to be bach elors; Greg's fam ily w as a 

secret th at h e k ept from th e brass, but h e brough t 

th em w ith h im to Virginia, insta ling th em q uietly 

in nearby Frederick sburg. H e flew F4B-4 biplanes 

during 19 37, tak ing part in routine training, an air 

sh ow dubbed th e "A lAm erican Air M aneuvers," 

and a fleet exercise in Puerto Rico. 

In M arch of 19 38, VM F-1 aviators excited 

took possession of th e latest, h ottest Grum m an 

figh ters, th e F3F-2s, th e last biplane figh ters used 

by US air forces. Pow ered by W righ t-Cyclone 

engines of 9 50 h orsepow er, th e fat-be lied aircraft 

w ere fast and rugged. In July, h e m oved to 

Ph iladelph ia, to attend th e M arine Corps' Basic 

Sch oolfor ten m onth s. Apparently not m otivated 

by th e "ground-pounder" curriculum , Boyington 

h ere evidenced th e w eak nesses th at w ould h aunt 

h im : excessive drink ing, borrow ing m oney (and 

not repaying it), figh ting, and poor official 

perform ance. 

H is irresponsibility, h is debts, and h is 

difficulties w ith th e Corps continued to m ount 

th rough out 19 39 and 19 40, w h en h e flew w ith 

VM F-2, stationed at San Diego. O ne m em orable, 

drunk en nigh t, h e tried to sw im across San Diego 

Bay, and w ound up nak ed and exh austed in th e 

Navy's Sh ore Patroloffice. Despite h is problem s 

on th e ground, it w as during th ese days of 19 40, 

flying w ith VM F-2, th at Boyington first began to 

be noticed as a top-notch pilot. W h atever h is oth er 

issues, h e could out-dogfigh t alm ost anyone. Back 

at Pensacola in January, 19 41, h is problem s 

m ounted - h e deck ed a superior officer in a figh t 

over a girl(not h is w ife), and h is creditors sough t 

officialh elp from th e M arine Corps. Greg's career 

w as a h opeless m ess by late 19 41. 

Flying Tigers

Anxious to h elp th e Ch inese in th eir w ar against 

Japan, th e U.S. governm ent arranged to supply 

figh ter planes and pilots to Ch ina, under th e cover 

of th e CentralAircraft M anufacturing Com pany 

(CAM CO ). CAM CO recruiters visited US 

m ilitary aviation bases look ing for volunteers. As 

Bruce Gam ble described it in Black Sh eep O ne: 

Th e pilots w e re volunte e rs only in th e se nse 

th at th e y w i lingly quit th e ir pe ace tim e job w ith 

th e m ilitary; oth e rw ise th e y w e re h andsom e ly

U.S. m ilitary service, in Greg's case, h is superiors

H e sh ipped out of San Francisco on 

Septem ber 24, 19 41, in th e Bosch fontein, of th e 

Dutch Java Line. After dock ing at Rangoon, th e 

AVG fliers arrived at th eir base at Toungoo on 

Novem ber 13. H e flew severalm issions during 

th e defense of Burm a. After Burm a fe l, h e 

returned to Kunm ing, and flew from th ere until 

th e Flying Tigers w ere incorporated into th e

After I w rote m y article on earth q uak e safety 

it occurred to m e th at if th e pow er w ent out after 

an earth q uak e, m y apartm ent's sm ok e detector 

w ould stop w ork ing. I decided to buy a battery 

pow ered one to use in case th at h appened. In fact, 

I bough t m ore th an one. O ne w as to put out in th e 

h a lw ay in case a fire started th ere, and anoth er 

w as for in th e apartm ent itself. I h ad been 

th ink ing th at h aving just one sm ok e detector in 

th e m iddle of m y apartm ent w as adeq uate, but it 

seem s th at I w as w rong about th at. Th e 

instructions th at cam e w ith one of m y new sm ok e 

detectors said th at you sh ould h ave one in every



bedroom and on every level. I only h ave one 

bedroom , but I decided th at it w ould be a good 

idea to put sm ok e detectors in th ree locations in 

m y apartm ent. I also bough t a rescue ladder so 

th at I can escape from m y balcony to th e ground if 

th ere is a fire in th e h a lw ay. It consists of tw o 

long ch ains w ith rungs betw een th em , attach ed to 

an anch or th at I can h ang from th e balcony's 

railing or th e w a lunderneath a w indow . 

As it turns out, th ere is m ore th an one k ind of 

sm ok e detector. O ne type, ca led ionization, is 

best at detecting particles of sm ok e created by 

fires th at are already burning. But th ere is anoth er 

type, ca led ph oto-electric, w h ich is better at 

detecting th e sm ok e created by a sm oldering fire, 

possibly h ours before open flam e erupts. I h ave 

decided to buy both types for m y apartm ent. I am 

going to try to get detectors th at m ak e a different 

alarm sound so th at if one goes off I w i lbe able 

to te lif it is a sm oldering fire and I can get m y 25 

pound fire extinguish er and attem pt to find it after 

ca ling th e fire departm ent. But th e directions th at 

cam e w ith th e sm ok e detector th at I bough t said if 

it goes off you sh ould get out as q uick ly as 

possible. It said th at you sh ouldn't even stop to get 

dressed - just get out. 

W h at I did w as learn h ow to tie a running 

k not, w h ich I used on ropes to fasten an arm y 

surplus generalpurpose strap to m y cat carrier. 

W h en I am sleeping I use a bungee cord to h old 

an extra pair of sh oes and m y cloth es w ith m y 

w a let and oth er item s th at I carry in th em on top 

of th e carrier. So th e idea is to put th e cat and ce l 

ph one in th e carrier, put th e strap over m y 

sh oulder, w alk out, pu lth e fire alarm , ca lth e fire 

departm ent, and th en get dressed. A fire m ay cut 

pow er to th e ligh ts so I h ave a h ead lam p 

flash ligh t th at I w i lstrap on to be able to see h ow 

to get out if th ere is a fire. 

I've h eard of a couple of instances of th e 

lith ium -ion (Li-ion) batteries in laptops catch ing 

on fire. Ce lph ones also use th is type of battery. 

Alth ough I've never h eard about a ce lph one 

catch ing fire, I bough t a fire safe to k eep m ine in 

w h en I am at h om e. Th ere is a sm ok e detector 

sitting righ t next to it in th e safe, and if it goes off 

th e plan is to close and lock th e safe and carry it 

outside, so th at it doesn't set fire to m y apartm ent 

building, causing m y neigh bors to loose 

everyth ing th at th ey ow n. 

H ow to recognize a h eart attack 

As it turns out, your risk of a h eart attack is 

greater if you h ave oth er h ealth conditions:

- Diabe te s: 1.8 tim e s as gre at. 

- H igh ch ole ste rol: 2.3 tim e s as gre at.

by insufficient blood flow th rough th e veins of th e 

legs, w h ich can result in a blood clot. 

Th ere are tw o th ings th at you can do to avoid 

econom y class syndrom e. Every h our w h ile 

flying, driving, or sitting for anoth er reason, you 

sh ould get up and w alk for th ree m inutes to force 

circulation of th e th e blood out of th e veins of th e 

legs. I've been told th at if I can't w alk , "w riting" 

th e letters of th e alph abet in th e air w ith your toes 

w ork s alm ost as w e l. Th is is w orth doing. I can 

te l you th is because I h ave econom y class 

syndrom e and I h ave to w ear special (and 

extrem ely expensive) sock s and I also h ave to do 

th ese exercises every w ak ing h our. In fact, th at is 

one of th e reasons th at I h aven't been com ing to 

Th erm opylae m eetings. Both of th e m eetings th at 

I cam e to distracted m e so m uch th at I forgot to 

w alk for h ours. I could h ave gotten additional 

blood clots from th is. It's even possible th at one of 

th em could dislodge and travel to m y lungs, 

causing pulm onary edem a, w h ich recently k i led a 

form er Congressional Representative from 

W ash ington (Jennifer Dunn). I'd lik e to com e to 

th e m eetings, but as you can see, it w ould be very 

dangerous for m e. It w ould be a good idea to ask 

your doctor about econom y class syndrom e th e 

next tim e you see th em .

Som ebody tried to break into m y m oth er's 

h ouse w h ile sh e w as gone. It h appened about a 

w eek after sh e insta led double-paned w indow s to 

save on energy costs. Th e attem pted burglar
