At Oasis Oldham we are... February 2014 | Issue 18
striving for
excellence
Hello &
Welcome
Dear Parents, Carers
and Partners
We are heading into Spring,
the daffodils are starting
to appear and everything
generally seems brighter.
That is certainly the case for
us at Oasis Academy Oldham.
In this issue you will read about the continued
success of our students in early entry exams,
these results came on the back drop of the
publication of the official league tables, which
places us in the top 4% nationally for improved
GCSE results.
Other news to share is the ongoing sporting
success and outstanding dance show as well as
seeing some fantastic year 10 girls graduate from
the Girls Out Loud Programme after just one-year
of Big Sister mentoring.
Finally there has been much in the national news
about behaviour in schools and what punishments
should be used. For me, behaviour in school
is not just about boundaries and sanctions, it is
also about nurturing and developing a strong
love of learning in young people, and probably
most importantly those who don’t always see the
relevance of going to school. As you will see from
this edition there are lots of great students here,
who show daily that they love what they do.
Thank you for your ongoing
support. As always, please give
us your feedback.
Exam results are in...
In November, the government
made changes to the examination
system which at the time caused
confusion, frustration and many
sleepless nights. Despite this,
we, as an academy, decided that
sitting exams in November was
still the best for our students.
In January, the results were in
and we were proved to be right.
Our students have achieved
exceptionally well and this puts
them on track to beat last year’s results!
To celebrate, and to give Year 11 the
chance to experience what the final result
day in August will be like, we held a
special assembly. All Year 11’s were given
an envelope with their results in (just like
August), then with a countdown, all 270
students opened their results together.
There were some tears, but mostly
shouting, screaming and laughing.
Students and teachers
celebrate great results
So far Year 11’s have made themselves
proud and with the continued hard work
in the run up to the summer examinations,
they will feel that sense of joy and
achievement once again in August.
Well done to our
Year 11 students
English Early
Entry Success
Year 11 students had cause for
celebration on Friday 24th January
with the arrival of the early entry
GCSE English Language results. 107
students were entered for the
examination, which took place in
November. Of those who took the exam,
a fantastic 86% achieved a higher grade
pass. 17 students achieved a grade A.
Congratulations and well done to all of
the students on their success.
OUR GIRLS
lead by example
Aspirations
Dreams
The Girls Out Loud programme has entered its second year at the
Academy and once again our Year 9 girls rose to the occasion.
They had the privilege of hearing life stories from a group of
fantastic women in all walks of life, from Barristers to Shoe
Designers, from Singer Songwriters to Radio DJ’s and many more.
The aim of the programme is to raise the aspirations of the girls in
our Academy and show them how they can follow their dreams and
have the career of their choice if they just stick at it and work hard.
Confidence
Hard Work
The girls are then asked if they would like to have a ‘Big Sister’
mentor from GOL and 20 lucky girls will be selected to participate
and become ‘Little Sisters’. Our current Year 10 ‘Little Sisters’
attended a graduate ceremony in Oldham and they spoke at
the event telling the students how it had helped them with their
confidence in school.
ME To we
Me to We is an innovative social
enterprise that offers socially
conscious and environmentally
friendly life changing experiences.
A selection of workshops were
delivered to both Oasis Oldham
and Oasis Limeside student on
Thursday 16th January. As a result
these inspiring workshops will now
enable our students to research their
chosen issue (Year 6 trafficking, Year
7 Abuse) and then put together a
project which is to be carried out in
their own time.
This could be fundraising or raising
awareness. As a result of their
projects they will be eligible for a
ticket to the We Day at Wembley
Stadium - no voluntary work, no
ticket. The students earn their way to
We Day.
For more information about the We
Day visit check out their website
The Anti-Bullying Poster
judged by Mr Hayes.
The winning entries are
as follows:
7HD - ENDEAVOUR
2nd. Sophia Haughton-Smart
DANCE
Year 11 BTEC
show
The show in full flow...
On Thursday 23rd January Oasis Academy held
the Year 11 BTEC Dance show in the auditorium.
It was a very successful evening and was well
attended by family, friends, teachers, Academy
Council members, and students.
Over the last few months Year 11 BTEC Dance
pupils have been working hard preparing for
the show, particularly as their planning and
preparations form part of their assessment.
Food technology
It has been another busy start to the year in Food Technology.
The Year 11 students have been working hard on their coursework
projects, and made some fantastic high quality dishes. They are
always making us proud, so well done, and keep up the good
work Year 11.
Children in Need, was a great fundraising event for Food
Technology. We held a huge cake sale in the Agora to raise
money. As always, our food staff worked really hard in
preparing, baking, and decorating the cakes. The sale was a
great success and the students were really supportive.
£234 raised
The Year 11 BTEC Dance cast
Pupils undertook production roles such as
choreographers, directors, designers and many
more, often multi-tasking. This gave a realistic
experience of how a professional company
works, particularly if the company is small.
The Year 11 students auditioned around
50 dancers from other year groups and
choreographed some routines of their own to
be included within the show. They gave up a lot
of their own time in order to teach these routines
to the performers. They also stayed behind after
school to practice their own routines which they
were assessed on during the show.
All students who performed in the show were
a credit to the Academy and should be really
proud of their achievements.
Designer
of the
Month
The cakes sold out by the end of break time and we raised a fantastic £234.
Straight As
at Book Club.
With the results of the English Language exams
for our Year 11 members, also came lots of
celebration at our recent Book Club meeting.
All of our Year 11 members; Jasmine Akhtar,
Sarah-Jane James, Zoe James, Jennifer Lowe,
Rohima Nasrin and Mariam Parveen did fantastic
in their exams in which they all achieved grade
As! Aided by the skills they had acquired at book
club to thoroughly understand complex texts and
to then make inferences about these texts, they
all felt confident in their ability to achieve well.
Well done girls, keep up the good work!
Book club members read together...
Book Club is open to all students Friday
3:20pm– 4:20pm in room 0.11 with
Review
Football
Congratulations to our U13 (Year 7 &
8) girls football team, not only are they
currently leading the way in the Oldham
Schools U13’s tournament but they
represented Oldham Athletic in the
N Power area finals, held at Barnsley FC.
The girls displayed excellent determination
and demonstrated a great team spirit to
finish 4th in their group. Well done to both
Amy Fielding and Maeva Kamden (both
in Year 7) who were jointly nominated
as player of the tournament in Barnsley.
Cross Country
Well done to our girls cross country team who
achieved their best ever results in the Oldham
Schools competition held in December 2013.
The senior team (year 10 and 11) captained by
Ellie Donohoe finished 1st in their age group
beating close competition from Bluecoat and
Crompton House (previously the only 2 names
on the trophy). The year 7 team finished 2nd in
their age group behind Crompton House. The
overall girls team finished 4th in the borough,
only 3 points behind Saddleworth. Watch this
space for a top 3 finish in 2014.
Ellie Donohoe (year 11), Jessica Axon (year 10),
Amelia Donohoe (year 9) and Jessica Makin
(year 7) along with Dwight McNeal (year 9) and
Kyle Anderson (year 10) from the boys team,
all had top 10 finishes and were invited to
represent Oldham in the Greater Manchester
Cross Country Championships in February 2014.
Well done and good luck to all those involved.
