Lesson Plan Template: Phrasal Verbs for the Holidays
Context: What kind of teaching situation/school setting is the lesson based on
Class profile: Group of 20 adult immigrant ESL students from Washington D.C., Age: Mid 20s
to 50s, Level: Intermediate, Curriculum: Open: Design authentic materials
Learner Needs: What do the learners need/want to learn
Learners want to learn to express themselves and understand English better through learning
and practicing grammar, idioms, listening (accents, fast speakers, phone calls, television),
reading, slang, speaking, study skills, verbs, vocabulary, and writing.
Objectives/Aims: What will your students know or be able to do as a result of this lesson
Students will understand what phrasal verbs are and how they work. Students will be able to
identify and use common phrasal verbs.
Assumptions: What are you assuming in terms of student background knowledge
This lesson assumes that students have experienced and perhaps used phrasal verbs before, even
if they were not familiar with what they were called or exactly how they are used.
Language Analysis: What new grammar and vocabulary will this lesson target
This lesson will provide an overview of and an opportunity to identify and practice use of
common phrasal verbs. Targeted phrasal verbs will be those that might be used around the
holidays.
Anticipated Problems and Solutions: What could go wrong What backup plans do you
have
Some students might need more assistance initially with phrasal verbs, especially on the first
exercise. To accommodate, I have provided a reference table on the back. Pacing is, as always,
a concern, but I believe the activities have been pared down enough to allow adequate time.
Materials: What materials will you use How will you adapt them
There is a Power Point and a student packet. The student packet has been adapted with a
reference table and modeling/examples have been provided. The clip for the listening exercise
has limited speech and will be viewed twice.
Timing/Sequencing: How much time will you need
Length of class is 50 minutes (to allow for certificates at the end of class).
Assessment: How will you measure what your students can do
Students will be assessed through completion of the worksheet, development of two sentences
using phrasal verbs, and sharing one sentence about their past or future holiday plans using one
of the phrasal verbs covered during the lesson.
