Upcoming MCA and GRAD Tests
Testing information was mailed home in late March to the parents/guardians of students in grades 7-12,
regarding some important accountability testing that will be taking place in the upcoming weeks. Please take
a close look at these dates and try to avoid scheduling appointments during your student’s testing sessions.
The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCAs) and alternate assessments (MCA-Modified and Minnesota
Test of Academic Skills (MTAS)) are the state tests that help districts measure student progress toward
Minnesota's academic standards and also meet the requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education
Act (ESEA). Most students take the MCA, but students who receive special education services and meet
eligibility requirements may take one of the alternate assessments instead. The list below gives the assessments
available for each subject with applicable grades given in parentheses.
Upcoming Assessments
Reading: MCA (grades 7, 8, 10) or MCA-Modified (grades 7, 8, 10) or MTAS (grades 7, 8,10)
Suckers for Solace for the Children Fundraiser!
Solace for the Children is an organization of volunteers that provides medical and dental care to needy children
all over the world. They are committed to providing care to children in need, wherever they are. This
outreach effort includes Afghanistan, where many children bear the effects of living in a war-torn
environment, with little medical help or educational opportunities available.
During Trimester 2 of this year, several students in the high school Language Arts classes read the novel
The Kite Runner, which takes place in Afghanistan; this prompted a group of Language Arts and ESL
teachers to ask how we could involve these readers in a tangible way and make them feel connected to the
characters and events in the novel. We also wanted to utilize a past connection we have with one of South
St. Paul High School’s former Packers, Husnia Alokozay, who is originally from Afghanistan. Husnia spent
one year attending school here through P.E.C.A (Partnership for the Education of Children in Afghanistan),
and her involvement was invaluable to the fundraiser.
Students liked the idea of selling suckers to raise money to provide materials for an educational resource
room for women and children in Afghanistan. They made posters advertising the sucker sales, wrote and
read daily announcements to inform other students about the sales, sold suckers during lunches, and
participated in a Skype meeting with Husnia and Patsy Wilson, of Solace for the Children, based in North
Carolina.
Overall, our students raised $518 selling
suckers! The Solace team decided that
this money would be used to pay for a new
computer for the resource room, a great
legacy to the brave women and children of
Afghanistan. The secondary students and
staff felt thrilled to have taken part in the
sales and excited that their efforts will
provide material support for women and
children trying to get an education in
Afghanistan. We sincerely believe that all
the participants in this fundraiser will heed
Husnia’s advice to think about what we
truly “need” versus what we merely “want”
and that access to an education is never
something to take for granted.
SSP Seniors Selected for
MSU Bachelor of fine Arts Musical Theater Program
Congratulations to Jeff Libby and Claire Clausen who auditioned and were selected into the MSU-Mankato Bachelor
of Fine Arts (BFA) Musical Theater program. Both will receive an $1100 Talent Grant and will be in the running to be
cast in lead roles for the 2013-2014 Musical Theater performances.
“The BFA degree programs offer a concentration in theatre study to a limited number of highly motivated and talented
students. The BFA student will pursue one of three areas of concentration: Acting, Musical Theatre or Design/
Technology. Admission to all BFA programs is highly competitive and limited in terms of student enrollment to insure
the individual attention necessary for effective professional training.”
This is an extraordinary achievement as a Freshman! Congratulations to both of them!
Key Club Keeps Busy Serving Others
The South Saint Paul Key Club has been very busy this year helping others. The student organization decided to
prioritize service this year, and they have been following through. This fall, the Key Club painted faces at Halloween on
Marie where they loved working with the children. They also held a can drive for Neighbors Inc. in the fall and were
proud to drop off 771 pounds of food from the secondary building! The Key Club was just starting to get fired up and
continued their service in the winter by volunteering at the Kiwanis Santa Breakfast, and making cookies and cards to
send to troops overseas in Afghanistan. After winter break, the Key Club started to get fired up about Pennies for Patients,
a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Students started by holding a Valentine’s Day Silent Auction
for the staff at the high school where they raised $215.00! Next, they wanted to get the student body involved and set
up coin jars at lunch where students could put money in a teacher’s jar. The teachers had agreed to do something funny
if their jar had the most money. This activity raised $161.50 and got Mr. Getzlaff to dress up as a leprechaun for a day.
In total, the Key Club was able to raise $376.50 for Pennies for Patients!
The students are so excited and proud of the work they are doing to help others around them.
They are starting to pick their spring activities and hope to impact even more people this year. It
is amazing the powerful things our students can do!

COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGES
COLLEGE AND CAREER NEWS – SPRING 2013
Diane Barse, College and Career Advisor
dbarse@sspps.org/651-306-3654
There has been a gigantic upswing in the number of students choosing to begin their post-secondary education at one
of the numerous Minnesota Community Colleges and Technical Colleges. There are a variety of reasons given for the
growing popularity of these schools. One big reason is relatively low tuition and of equal importance is the
specialized training they provide in a number of high demand fields (ex. Nursing, Computer Technology, Criminal
Justice).
Another attractive feature of these schools is their open admissions policy. Students do not have to take the ACT or
SAT for admission. Applicants must submit their high school transcripts or GED and take an assessment test the
schools administer in areas such as Math and English. These assessments are used by the school to place the
student in the proper course sequence.
Transferring from a community or technical school to a four year college or university is becoming more commonplace.
It is recommended that if this is the chosen route, the student should check with the four year school in which they have
an interest. It is important to understand what the transfer process involves; what academic standards must be met for
their academic work to transfer and what, if any, coursework would not transfer.
More information about Community Colleges and Technical Colleges can be found at www.mnscu.edu . Advance
planning information related to transferring to 4 year schools can be found at www.transfer.org .
SPRING 2013
What parents and students should be thinking about….
Seniors: All students attending post-secondary schools next fall should fill out the FAFSA. If you have not done so, go
to www.fafsa.ed.gov to fill out an application on-line. Strong academic work continues to be important. It builds a platform
for success as a first year student in college.
Juniors: Sign up for the ACT. It is essentially required as an entrance exam for admittance by four year colleges and
universities. If a student is planning on attending a two year school and then transferring, the ACT is not required.
Start researching schools! It is a good thing to start to shape your college choice in broad terms. Do you want to attend
a small college or major university Do you want to attend school in a rural community or a metropolitan area Do you
believe you will “fit in” on campus Does the college or university offer your major What type of educational costs fit
with your situation and future plans Keep up your grades!!! Admission counselors will scrutinize your junior year academic
record.
Sophomores and Freshman: Stay involved in school through sports and activities. College reps look highly on
prospective students who have a history of involvement in their school and community

immunity.
• Not miss school because of asthma
• Have fewer or no emergency room visits
• Use less rescue inhaler medicine
