Edenham High School

Mission Statement
Edenham is an improving school and has made significant progress on all fronts in the last
few years. The school will be at the centre of the community, serving as the learning hub
of an extended school, catering for the needs of students and their families in a way that
promotes traditional values of courtesy, community spirit and tolerance at the same time as
developing essential skills for the modern age.
As a Technology specialist school Edenham is well placed to embrace change. We would
look to further develop our specialist status by including Engineering and the digital, multimedia
technologies to give our students the edge in an increasingly competitive market
place. These new technologies would re-energise all curriculum areas, giving a spur to
further innovations in approaches to teaching and learning, as well as developing specific
vocational expertise.
As well as subject specific skills, knowledge and understanding, a crucial element of our
plans would be to develop our work in the area of social entrepreneurship. Through our
own programmes and imaginative partnerships with other bodies we would explicitly seek
to equip our students with the leadership skills, creative thinking, problem solving skills and
social confidence that are vital in today’s world. These personal, learning and thinking skills,
so important to success in the workplace, will be an integral part of our curriculum offer.
Edenham already has a reputation for an innovative personalized curriculum, offering a
range of courses via a series of different pathways. We would seek to develop this further by
offering clear routes of progression for all learners, from our partner Primary schools though
to post 16 providers at various colleges and sixth forms, thereby impacting on young
people’s lives between the ages of 5 and 18.

Dear Parents
Guardians
& Students
Edenham High School is a caring, well ordered school
community based upon mutual respect between staff
which fosters quality and high achievement in all that
staff and students do.
Students follow the National Curriculum and we
encourage them to achieve their full potential. We
expect the highest standards of individual achievement
and teach our students to be self-reliant, responsible
and respectful. Our mission statement drives the school
community and our role in the wide community.
Our excellent ICT facilities
whole curriculum
Student Organisation
Relationships within the school are excellent. An
insistence on good order is based upon respect for
others and understanding that learning can only take
place within a settled environment. Our students are
characteristically well motivated and well disposed.
Within the purposeful environment created by the
school and its staff, students show high levels of
corporate self-regulation and individual self-discipline.
Their many positive actions – whether in work, extra
curricular activities, or community service – are taken
as opportunities for the school to praise achievement,
acknowledge considerate conduct, commend caring
actions, and celebrate successes.
It is the aim of the school to make the students’
experience of belonging to Edenham as positive as
possible from their first visit to the school in the July
preceding the beginning of Year 7.
On entry to the school each student is placed in a tutor
group within a year group. The tutor takes responsibility
for the academic progress, development and well
being of each student in the group. Students will be
challenged to improve and raise their standards.
The Key Stage Deputy Head Pastoral, Head of Year and tutor
are the key authority figures for each student of the school.
There are eight tutor groups for each year group: students
stay in the same group as they move up the school,
where possible with the same tutor and Head of Year.
The personal tutor is a key person in the student’s life and
has a vital role in helping to maintain individual standards
of performance and behaviour and in communicating
with parents. Students are able to have a voice and take
part in the management of the school through their Year
Councils and the overall School Council.
Sometimes a student is placed ‘On Report’ for written
comments on the student’s behaviour, effort and
punctuality in each subject. The report is taken home each
evening for the information of parents and to monitor
progress in improvement. Students may be detained after
school for any misbehaviour, lack of punctuality or the
non-completion of work. Saturday morning detentions
are held for serious issues. In such cases parents will be
informed at least 24 hours in advance.
“ The popularity of physical education and high levels
of participation in sports activities make a significant
contribution to students maintaining a healthy lifestyle.”
Many students take part in
out of hours activities
Our Clubs and Sports
We offer a range of extracurricular opportunities during lunch and after school. These include Art, Dance,
Drama, Music and Sport. There is also a varied programme of residential trips and foreign exchanges which
enhance the curriculum. Sport is particularly popular at Edenham with hundreds of students taking part
in out of hours activities. Our teams compete in all the major games both locally and nationally. The PE
department also organise skiing and take some of our sports teams on trips abroad. Students can take part
in a range of sports and games at Edenham. These include trampolining and yoga and even ultimate frizbee.
We also have a new climbing wall. Alongside GCSE PE, students can also take a BTECH in PE or study for the
Junior Sport Leaders Award. We celebrate our students’ sporting successes at our annual Sports Presentation
Evening at Fairfield Hall. The Shirley Schools cluster manager is based at Edenham working with primary and
other secondary schools.
The Curriculum
The curriculum is broad and balanced, catering for the full range
of ability and need, from students who are gifted and talented to
students with special educational needs.
The school has a rich ICT resource base and we expect all students
to develop skills in this area. The curriculum offers both vocational
and academic pathways across the age range.
Relationships in the school are positive. Orderly and purposeful
conduct is achieved through respect for others, in line with the
schools behaviour policy.
We want our new
Year 7 pupils to
settle in happily
Our Support
The welfare and progress of every student at
Edenham is closely monitored and supported
Students are particularly well supported in the
transition from primary school. We take the time
to visit primary schools to introduce ourselves and
hold parent and pupil induction events. When they
join us, trained Peer Mentors and our Students
4 Students team provide new pupils with daily
help and support. We want our new Year 7 pupils
to settle in happily and quickly become active
members of our school community.
Student Welfare Office
The central student welfare office deals with all matters relating to attendance, including late arrivals and early
departures, student admission and records. In the case of student sickness or injury, students report to the Office
and contact is made with home as necessary.
Student Charter
You always try to understand other people’s point of view.
In class you make it easy and possible for everyone to learn
and for the teacher to teach.
This means arriving on time with everything you need
for each lesson, beginning and ending the lesson in a
courteous and orderly way, listening carefully, following
instructions, helping each other where appropriate and
being quiet at all times.
You move gently and quietly about the school. This means
never running, barging or shouting, but being ready to help by
opening doors, standing back to let people pass and helping
carry things. In crowded areas please keep to the right.
You always speak politely to everyone (even if you feel
bad tempered!) and use a low voice. Shouting is always
discourteous. You are silent whenever you are required to be.
You keep the school clean and tidy, so that it is a welcoming
place we can all be proud of. This means putting all litter in
bins, keeping walls and furniture unmarked and taking great
care of the displays, particularly of other peoples work.
Out of school, walking locally or with a school group, you
always remember that the school’s reputation depends on
the way you behave.
