From the President
One of the most important gifts we can offer our children is a solid education
grounded by Christ-centered values. It is the most important investment we can make
in their future.
While many schools tout their academic rigor, their sense of family, and their
students’ accomplishments in athletics and the arts, few schools anywhere in the
country are able to weave these threads into the educational fabric as well as
Memphis Harding Academy. Built upon a solid academic program, arts and
athletics bring balance to the curriculum by providing a variety of opportunities for
students to pursue multiple interests. Harding Academy is so much more than what
is taught in the classroom. This issue of FOCUS celebrates the excellence of
Harding Academy. Within its pages, you will see numerous examples of why we
say “Harding is Forever.”
The caliber of MHA students is well known. They earn some of the highest SAT
scores in this region, possess an exceptional record on AP examinations, earn
National Merit recognition, and are accepted into the finest universities in the
country. Memphis Harding Academy students excel in the arts and are champions
on the athletic fields. We recognize that our students are so much more than these
things. The caliber of Memphis Harding Academy students is measured by what is in
their hearts. What differentiates our students from those at our peer schools is their
empathy and kindness for others, their strong ethical compass and their shining
character.
When I arrived at the Academy four years ago to begin my work as president, I
was impressed with the warm and loving welcome I received from the students,
families, and faculty. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with our administrators,
staff, and teachers as we have continued to add to programs and services for our
students. Even as we continue to add new dimensions to the school, I am pleased to
see that over the ensuing years, the welcoming nature of the community has not
changed. As you visit our campuses, you will feel the loving and Christ-like warmth
that is evident in our students, teachers, staff, and administrators.
One of the best things about working at Harding Academy is the knowledge that
what we do here every day makes a difference. Our students find themselves in a
place where learning can be exciting, challenging, and, occasionally, fun! It is a
place where people care far more about each student as a person than a number or
a grade. Our goal is to encourage, through precept and example, the development
of each student in the image of God, to integrate biblical faith with all of the
disciplines in a manner enabling students to view themselves, all people, and the
world through the eyes of faith in Christ Jesus, and to be able to apply godly
wisdom in making choices and take responsibility for themselves. These are a few
of the reasons we say that “Harding is Forever.”

It’s the Southwind campus
of Harding Academy.
The Southwind campus,
formerly known as the
Quince Road campus
when it was housed in
the Quince Road Church
of Christ building, moved
to its present location after the sale of the Quince Road
facility. Having just completed its fourth year at this
location, the Southwind location remains unknown to many
due to a location that is removed from major traffic arteries
in the city of Memphis. However, for the families who
have been blessed by the opportunity to have their children
taught by caring, professional, loving individuals along
with the oversight of Carol Knight as principal, they know
that there is something very special about this community of
families who rallied together to save their school’s location.
We have many intensely loyal families at the Harding
Southwind campus; however, the economic challenges
facing so many families resulted in a downturn in
enrollment for the campus this year. The campus has a
large number of families who are employed by FedEx at its
World Headquarters at Hacks Cross, its Forest Hill-Irene
campus and its Collierville campus, which are all
conveniently located near the Southwind location of
Harding. The corporate layoffs have affected the financial
decisions of families. This affected re-enrollment. In turn,
the families were faced with not having a location of a
school that offers the care and individualized attention that
affords academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment.
When the Board of Directors decided to retain the
Southwind campus, rather than combine it with the other
elementary campuses, they turned to the Harding
Southwind families to help increase the enrollment so that
the campus could remain open. The families at the
Southwind location were faced with the challenge of
increasing enrollment within a week. Rising to the
occasion, families stretched themselves financially and
sought new families to share in the secret of how special
Southwind is for Harding Academy. Families reached out
to share with other families what Harding Academy
Southwind has to offer in the way of a safe, secure
environment where the low teacher-student ratio gives each
child the opportunity for increased individual attention, a
loving, skillful principal that is unbeatable, faculty and staff
who have 180 total years of service to Harding Academy,
and a family community of caring for each other that is
unmatched! As a result, Harding Southwind will continue
to open its doors for its students to come in and be blessed.
This will continue, of course, as long as others continue to
share the secret. Please share it along with us to those
who may not know!

A New Perspective...

I remember transferring from a public school in
Memphis to Harding Academy. I remember thinking it was
so different from any school experience I had ever had.
The class sizes were actually calculable, the students were
polite and eagerly wanted to learn, and the teachers
wanted me to excel not only academically, but also
spiritually. The teachers and administrators displayed a
genuine interest in my spiritual growth and in my life.
Harding felt like, and still feels like, more than just a
place where I attended school. Harding became a kind of
family to me. Harding will always be near to my heart not
only for giving me an academic education, which
prepared me for college, but also for giving me a life
education, which prepared me for the world outside of
high school. It made me who I am today.
I cherish Harding for memories I could get only at
Harding. I have memories of homecoming, pep rallies,
cheering at basketball games, and creating lasting
friendships. I remember serving the community with fellow
classmates and feeling like I was truly making a difference,
trips with various clubs, and walking into the auditorium for
the last time as a senior thinking “this time has gone by too
fast.” I still thank God for the privilege I had of attending
such an incredible institution like Harding Academy.
I am proud to have been a part of the Harding
tradition, and I look forward to that tradition continuing.
My wish is that others will have the opportunity to
experience the blessing of a Harding Academy education.
Now that I am finishing my college education, I see
how important it was to have that spiritually-minded
education shaping me at such a crucial time in my life. It
would be silly to say that Harding is the only place to
receive a quality education, but I can say for certain that
Harding offers an experience that a student could not
receive anywhere else. Harding is incomparable with any
other school because of the distinguished teachers,

worked as an intern at Harding Academy last summer, I
realize how crucial donations are to the school. Harding’s
Annual Fund allows students from all walks of life to
receive the exceptional education that Harding offers.
The Annual Fund allows for specialized training for
teachers in their specific fields (making them some of the
best-equipped teachers in the city). It goes toward, among
other things, providing the latest technology for students.
And most importantly the Annual Fund goes toward money
for financial aid. This allows more students with monetary
needs to receive an education at Harding.
As someone with a single mother, I know the
importance of financial assistance. It would have never
been possible for me to receive the education I did at
Harding without the help my family received. I assume
many families, especially in today’s economy, realize the
importance of having some assistance to provide the very
best for their children.
It is a priority of mine, by giving to the Annual Fund, to
give back a little of what Harding has given to me. Every
little bit goes a long way. It is my prayer that it become a
priority of yours to give back to Harding as well, in order
for Harding’s rich legacy to thrive for years to come.

Grandpartner
Few things compare to the love of grandparents for their
grandchildren. A grandparent’s role in the life of a child is
special, and the relationship between children and their
grandparents is treasured.
At Harding Academy, grandparents are regularly
involved in school activities. Harding grandparents can be
seen at ballgames, drama productions, music concerts, and
chapel presentations. They are frequent lunch visitors and
classroom readers. Many Harding grandparents are also
alumni and know first hand the blessing of receiving a Christ
centered education. All grandparents appreciate and
understand the value of a quality education.
Recognizing the importance of grandparents in the lives
of students, Harding Academy initiated the GrandPartners’
Council to build stronger relationships with these important
individuals. GrandPartner gifts also enhance the quality of
the education Harding students receive. During the 2009-
2010 school year, the GrandPartners received several
benefits including a 31 day prayer calendar, a Harding
Grandparent decal, artwork from elementary grandchildren
and a pass to a school event. However, for most
grandparents, the greatest benefit is making a difference in
the lives of Harding students. The response to the program

has been tremendous with over 250 grandparent individuals
and couples joining in a matter of a few days. These
GrandPartners also gave over $20,000 to support the
school’s programs. In the 2010-11 school year, we have
several activities planned for ALL grandparents to be involved
in. The grandparents who wish to join the GrandPartners
Council will again receive a pass to a school event along
with several other “special” gifts. We hope that you will
choose to be a part of this support program.
Cooper Whitfield’s “Nanny” Mrs., Nancy Holcomb,
joined the GrandPartner Council in support of her four
grandchildren at the Academy. Cooper and his sister Jordan,
along with their cousins Morgan and Trenton Miller, are
second generation Harding students. For them, a Harding
Academy experience is a family tradition. Mrs. Holcomb
and the many other GrandPartners make that experience
happen. Cooper may have summarized it best when he
said, “Grandparents give us good memories.”
We are extremely grateful for the faithful support of
grandparents who are actively involved in the lives of their

Sound Advice
In Unsettling Times
If you are like me, you may be having a difficult time
listening to or reading about the bleak reports concerning the
economy, the plunging real estate values, the poor
employment outlook, and the significant losses in the stock
market. What makes it so difficult for me is that many of the
tried and true guidelines normally applicable to these matters
that we have been relying upon for many years do not
appear to be applicable. Now, when we need to make a
decision in one or more of these areas, we find ourselves not
knowing what to do and therefore, hesitant to act.
Fortunately, there is guidance in other areas that is still
valid regardless of the condition of our economy. One
example of such valid guidance comes from estate planning
professionals when recommending that every adult should
have four basic legal documents to address matters of estate
planning.
The first document recommended is a Living Will. This
is the document that enables you to provide advance
instruction to medical providers as to whether or not you
want extra ordinary measures performed to keep you alive
when you have a terminal condition with no reasonable
medical expectation of recovery. Having this document
keeps this decision between the patient and his or her
physician, thus relieving family members from having to make
this decision.
The second document is a Durable Power of
Attorney for Health Care. This is the document where
you grant another person the authority to make health care
decisions when your condition is such that you cannot
communicate your wishes with your medical providers.
The third document is a Durable Power of Attorney
(for Business). This is the document used to grant another
person the authority to handle your business affairs when you

gives you the opportunity to continue your support of
charitable organizations you have supported through the
years.
I have comfort in knowing that regardless of the
condition of the economy, real estate values, an unstable job
market, or volatility in the stock market, that having these four
documents in place can provide an individual, as well as
their families, with a level of stability desired during difficult
times.

of Directors ensures that the mission, faculty, staff, facilities,
and resources are appropriate, relevant, and vital to the
community we serve. In so doing, the Board is committed to
providing an environment that develops strong ethical and
moral values in our students. They believe it is essential to
provide a program to help each student develop his/her
own personal value system rooted in an active faith in God.
The Board views Harding Academy in a continuous selfimprovement
process to maintain its Christian educational
leadership position in the Memphis area by providing a
high-quality, affordable, Christ-centered education, to a
broad spectrum of students with diverse abilities, needs,
and socioeconomic backgrounds. The Academy's focus is
on fostering each student's intellectual, spiritual, social, and
physical development through a balanced, integrated
program in a secure Christian environment.

National Merit FINALISTS
Our four National Merit Semifinalists have now all been declared Finalists.
These academically talented high school seniors have the opportunity to
continue in the competition for some 8200 National Merit Scholarships,
worth more than $36 million, that will be offered this spring. To become a
Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding record throughout high
school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and
earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the PSAT.

Harding Takes First
Place at Canstruction ®
During the Canstruction® competition at the
University of Memphis in early February, Harding's
AP Calculus class won the Jurors' Favorite award
for their design, “Crayola Canundrum.” This was
the top award in the competition. The structure was
displayed in the Herff Engineering Building at The
University of Memphis. After the competition was
over, they donated the 1,631 cans to the Mid-South
Food Bank.
Knowledge Masters
Twenty-five of Harding's fifth and sixth grade
students were invited to join the Knowledge Masters
Open team. Winter competition was held in January
where Harding finished 1st in Tennessee and 36th
nationally.

Homecoming Court was introduced and
Jordan Creamer was crowned Queen. Finally

Class of 2011, the Juniors.

1st Annual Harding Fish Fry
The 1st annual back-to-school fish fry was a great success as
over 500 people filled the elementary gym for catfish, fries,
slaw, and hush puppies. The 2009-2010 spirit theme of
RESTORE THE ROAR was announced and the new spirit tshirts
sold out fast. After dinner, students of all ages enjoyed
giant inflatables, class games, and a dunk tank. When the
sun went down, Coach Tim Stafford and Athletic Director
Kevin Starks gave a moving devotional. "Our school is about
the people, the Harding family," said Coach Stafford. It was
a great beginning to the new school year. See the back page

The Harding 5K in November this past fall was a
tremendous success as we raced in support of Harding
Academy students. Our official race starter, U of M
basketball coach Josh Pastner, was a favorite among
parent photographers and students. The 7th - 12th
grade classes had a great time while manning creative
water and cheering stations. Prowler got extra exercise
as he led the younger Harding students around their
own course in the 5L (5 Laps for Little Lions). The
amount raised was over $50,000. The secondary
location had 100% participation in raising money for
this event. The reward for 100% student involvement
was a school-wide holiday on the Monday following
the Easter weekend. Thanks to senior Whitney Mongue
for designing the new Harding 5k logo. We are proud
of everyone that participated to make this event a
success. We can't wait for next year!

from the Lipscomb/Vanderbilt Nursing Program in May
2009. Ryan also graduated from Lipscomb in May 2009
with a degree in Biblical Languages. He plans to pursue a
Master of Divinity at Harding University Graduate School of
Religion, and Casie will be a nurse practitioner. The couple
