The Leonis Adobe
Museum was featured
on Huell Howser’s KCET
television program,
Visiting…With Huell
Howser. The episode,
which premiered on
January 11 th , was
Wink Martindale & Ross Porter
filmed at the museum on October 7, 2009.
Visiting…With Huell Howser is part of the popular
California’s Gold series which has been on the air for
more than 17 years.
The Museum hosted a
premier kick‐off party
at the Sagebrush
Cantina on Monday,
January 11 th with
Howser as the featured
guest. Joined by the
Monique Black & Lauraine Bifulco fourth and fifth grade
students from University Preparation School CSU
Channel Islands who were featured on the episode,
the party was attended by over 300 guests who
enjoyed refreshments and “Huell Howser Dinner
Specials” as they watched the episode. Wrapping up
the evening was a live performance by the award
winning Graywolf Blues Band.
In addition to being a premier party, the event was a
“kick off” fundraiser for our ongoing “Expedition for
Education” bus program. The event raised over
$2000 to assist underfunded schools. For more

Spring at the Leonis
Adobe seems
especially beautiful
this year. Outside,
there are blossoms
on the fruit trees and in the gardens,
and young lambs and goats frolic in
the corrals as life “reawakens” on the
ranch.
But we’re proud of what’s been
happening on the inside as well.
With the help of the National Guild of
Professional Paperhangers and
Bradbury & Bradbury Art Wallpapers,
we have repapered the Plummer
House with historic Victorian period
wallpapers – and what a difference it
makes! The rooms are warm yet
elegant, more like a home a family
would once have lived in – and, of
course, they did.
Much of what happens at the Adobe
happens because of our loyal
supporters, and Michael Miller was
an important one. Michael’s most
recent efforts on behalf of the Adobe
were helping to raise funds for buses
to bring local school children to the
Adobe. You may have seen him
working the Huell Howser Premier
Party on January 11th, when the
Leonis Adobe program was broadcast
on KCET. Unfortunately, Michael
passed away just a month after that –
and he is missed.

Docent Spotlight:
Janice Swain
After working for LAUSD as a
Cafeteria Training Specialist for
27 years, Jan Swain decided
that it was time to retire. Six
months later Jan was ready to
get back to work. At the urging
of her good friend Charlotte
Stehlik, Jan became a docent at
Leonis Adobe Museum. Born
and raised in Southern
California, Jan enjoys helping to preserve the history of the
area.
Jan and her husband Howard just celebrated their 48 th
wedding anniversary this year. Together they raised two
wonderful children and now have four grandchildren. In her
spare time, Jan enjoys camping and dedicating her time to a
philanthropic sorority which raises funds for Multiple
Sclerosis.
The Leonis Adobe Museum is proud to have someone as
dedicated as Jan as part of our team.
Springtime at the Adobe
Held in the afternoon on March 27 th , “Springtime at the
Adobe” was a wonderful event enjoyed by over 300 guests.
Children had an abundance of things to do as they played
games, made crafts to take home, fed the baby animals,
made homemade tortillas, learned how to rope cattle,
participated in an egg hunt, watched wool spinning
demonstrations, and listened to live music by artist Craig
Newton. In addition to all of the activities, several vintage
cars were on display, courtesy of the Bay City Rodders.
Expedition for Education
During these tough economic
times, schools are unable to
provide field trips for their
students. In an effort to assist
these underfunded schools, the
Leonis Adobe Museum has
initiated a new bus fund
program, “Expedition for
Education”. The museum is seeking donations to ensure that
this program continues to support our schools. The cost is $4
per seat or $250 for one bus. Thanks to our many donors we
have raised enough money for eight buses to date. To
contribute funds or apply for a bus for your class, please visit

Anza de Calabazas
The Leonis Adobe Museum is pleased to announce that the
“Anza de Calabazas” historic pageant will be held on the
museum grounds. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April
24 th at 2pm, and has been produced by the Calabasas Anza
Heritage Association (CAHA) since 1985. The pageant
presents the story of the expedition led by Colonel Juan
Bautista de Anza in 1776 to bring Spanish settlers to
California, and will include a regiment of soldiers, music, and
Spanish and Native American dancing.
Volunteer Spotlight
Audrey Johnson
For more than three years
Audrey Johnson has
volunteered at the Leonis
Adobe Museum keeping track
of the publicity archives. The
publicity archives are a very
important part of the LAM
history which continues to
grow from year to year. Living
nearby Audrey always had a
desire to help out at the museum, but due to time
constrictions she was unable to commit to being a docent. By
working with staff, Audrey found a way to assist the museum.
Every few months Audrey drops by to pick up our publicity
book and organize it. The LAM is very fortunate to have
someone as wonderful as Audrey help in our quest to Share
the Legend.
Wallpapering the Plummer House
The Plummer House is honored to have been
chosen as the 2010 charity project by the Los
Angeles Chapter of the National Guild of
Professional Paperhangers. The Plummer
House, built in the 1870s and once known as
“the oldest house in Hollywood”, was moved to
the grounds of the Leonis Adobe Museum in
1983 after being threatened with demolition by
the City of Los Angeles. After restoration was completed, it served as our gift shop and
exhibit rooms for many years. Like any old residence, regular maintenance was required,
and the time had come for some “freshening up”.
Bradbury & Bradbury Art Wallpapers have
been manufacturing historically accurate,
period‐style wallpapers for over 30 years,
and were the obvious choice when choosing
new paper for the Plummer House. When
our office addition was built in 1991,
Bradbury & Bradbury wallpapers were
selected to complement the antique
furnishings and fixtures. Bradbury &
Bradbury generously gave us the papers at a
reduced price, and their Customer Service Manager Beverly Phillips came down from
Benicia to help with the installation. Local wallpaper installer Sandra Murray took on the
job of recruiting and organizing the following volunteer members of the National Guild of
Professional Paperhangers who participated in the wallpaper installation:
Sandra Murray, Beverly Phillips, Kay Saavedra, Michael Zekich, Carolyn Green, Jim
Grumbley, Bill Williams, Michael Weisbrot, Lena Hokanson, Jerome Lenonrud, Ken Pisano,
Ross Radoff, Jim Moran, and Nansea Gratz.
The Leonis Adobe Museum is grateful to these individuals for all of their hard work
towards the refurbishment of the Plummer House. The generosity of the members of the
National Guild of Professional Paperhangers, and Bradbury & Bradbury Art Wallpapers is
deeply appreciated.
Stick to Your Guns and Speakeasy Murder Mystery Dinner
The Leonis Adobe Museum is pleased to
announce our second annual Murder Mystery
Dinner “Stick to your Guns and Speakeasy”. This
collaboration with Capers Productions will be
held on May 22 nd , from 5:30pm to 9pm. Set
during prohibition in 1927 when the Adobe was
owned by the Agoure family. The evening will be
filled with murder and mayhem. Tell your
bootlegger to make other plans for the evening
and join us for what is sure to be a fabulous
night! Ticket prices are $45 for Leonis Adobe
Museum members and $60 for non‐members.
