A career <strong>in</strong> the trades<br />
Today, there is a trade to suit everyone’s abilities and<br />
<strong>in</strong>terests, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g yours. <strong>Trades</strong>people work with their<br />
hands and their m<strong>in</strong>ds to meet the day’s challenges. They<br />
work <strong>in</strong> film, aerospace, telecommunications, horticulture,<br />
homebuild<strong>in</strong>g and many other <strong>in</strong>dustries. In fact, there are<br />
more than 140 trades <strong>in</strong> British Columbia.<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g a trade helps you to become a valued member<br />
of a dynamic workforce. There is a big demand for skilled<br />
tradespeople <strong>in</strong> British Columbia, and the opportunities<br />
are grow<strong>in</strong>g every year. Some trades are experienc<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
shortage of tra<strong>in</strong>ed workers and with the population ag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
there will be opportunities <strong>in</strong> just about every trade area.<br />

The support you need to get there<br />
<strong>Women</strong> can face unique challenges when prepar<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
trades careers. The ITA <strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Trades</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiative,<br />
sponsored by the <strong>Industry</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>Authority</strong> (ITA), gives<br />
you access to a range of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g options, f<strong>in</strong>ancial and<br />
other supports that can help you meet those challenges.<br />
By help<strong>in</strong>g you connect to supported programs offered<br />
by <strong>in</strong>dustry, non-profit, college and union partners, the ITA<br />
can help you f<strong>in</strong>d your perfect fit.<br />
F<strong>in</strong>ancial supports<br />
The costs associated with tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g can be high. You<br />
may be eligible for tuition fund<strong>in</strong>g, wage subsidies, and<br />
fund<strong>in</strong>g to cover other expenses <strong>in</strong>curred dur<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Some examples <strong>in</strong>clude: the cost of provid<strong>in</strong>g childcare,<br />
the cost of transportation to and from the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g or<br />
worksite, and even the cost of tools and equipment<br />
required by your trade.<br />
Hands-on experience<br />
On-the-job tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g allows you to spend time <strong>in</strong> a real<br />
workplace and ga<strong>in</strong> valuable hands-on experience. That’s<br />
why the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs blend workplace tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g with<br />
<strong>in</strong>-class learn<strong>in</strong>g. You will have an opportunity to see what<br />
a career <strong>in</strong> the trades is really like.<br />
Skills upgrad<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Reach<strong>in</strong>g your career goals may require skills upgrad<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> a number of areas. You may need to upgrade your math<br />
or literacy skills before qualify<strong>in</strong>g for more advanced<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, or you may need to take a jobsite safety course.<br />
This <strong>in</strong>itiative can help you upgrade your skills and<br />
prepare for the next level.<br />

As well as f<strong>in</strong>ancial supports, you’ll also benefit from<br />
<strong>in</strong>troductions to potential employers and employment<br />
counsell<strong>in</strong>g to help guide your career preparation.<br />

About the <strong>Industry</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>Authority</strong><br />
The <strong>Industry</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>Authority</strong> (ITA) helps people <strong>in</strong> B.C. reach their full potential by support<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the trades.<br />
The ITA is a prov<strong>in</strong>cial crown agency that manages B.C.’s trades tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g system, work<strong>in</strong>g collaboratively with <strong>in</strong>dustry,<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g providers, career counsellors, labour unions, government and others.<br />
The ITA has made a special commitment through the Canada-B.C. Labour Market Agreement fund<strong>in</strong>g to support Aborig<strong>in</strong>al<br />
people, women and immigrants <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g career opportunities <strong>in</strong> the trades.<br />
The ITA <strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Trades</strong> Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiative currently <strong>in</strong>volves five projects operated by partner organizations, and is<br />
part of a long-term strategy to match women’s skills to the needs of B.C.’s workplace.<br />
