what is legal
Biker Days in the Osage celebrated its
30 th birthday in grand fashion this year, and
ABATE of Oklahoma was right in the thick
of it. The local news came out, “Oklahoma
Biker” shot a documentary, Dyna Mike was
there for “Biker” and “Outlaw Biker” magazines
and of course yours truly was there
to cover all of the action for ya. From the
time we rolled in to the time we packed up
we were busier than a one legged waitress
Once again my hat goes off to Nelson
Carter and all of the OCIB staff for taking
care of ABATE of Oklahoma. They provide
us with the best spot for the booth
and it shows! The ABATE corner was the
place to be. We always had a crowd gathered
around having a good time. Some folks
were checking out our trophies for the tattoo
contest, others were signing up to be
members or renewing their membership.
Most folks were taking copies of the
The Question: In Oklahoma, if you don’t
have a windshield, are sunglasses legal eye
protection or does it legally have to be
goggles
That was a simple question asked of the
Oklahoma ABATE Yahoo group, and a
lively discussion ensued that finally ended
when a participant posted the state statute.
The first reply was, “a resounding NO!
Standard sunglasses will get you a ticket
real quick if the cop wants to be a pain. Eye
protection must be ANSI rated and wrap
around. I learned this the hard way many
years ago.”
According to one, the Osage County
Sheriff’s Dept. makes a lot of money every
Mayfit and Biker Days in the Osage at
Pawhuska through routinely pulling over
and ticketing anyone riding a bike without
a windshield who’s wearing sunglasses.
“It used to be a $99 ticket, but I believe
it’s gone up over the last couple of years,”
he said.
Another said, “Let’s not forget that in the
US, the burden of proof is on the state.
Neither the cops nor the judge can prove
whether or not your glasses - tinted or plain
- are made of approved shatter proof material.
This is a scam and we’re letting them
get away with it. The standard for eye wear
is a performance standard. The only way
to tell if your pair is shatterproof is to fire a
BB at a lens to see if it penetrates. The BB
must be of specified weight and shape fired
“The only reason the cops, the judge, and
the county are getting away with this scam
is because no one has walked into that
courtroom and demanded that the state
prove that the particular pair of sunglasses
you were ticketed for aren’t shatterproof.
Case dismissed.”
Finally, someone posted the Oklahoma
State Statute §47-40-105:
The following equipment shall be required
on all motorcycles and all motor
scooters except on actual trail rides conducted
outside of public roads and highways:
B. Windshield: All vehicles covered under
this section shall be equipped with a
windshield of sufficient quality, size and
thicknes to protect the operator from foreign
objects, except that in lieu of such
windshield the operator shall wear goggles
or face shield of material and design to
protect him from foreign objects.
Another version ended this way: or other
protective eye wear which meets American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard
Z87.1 and provides positive retention,
or a face shield of material and design to
protect the operator from foreign objects
One rider added, “One of the things they
used to do here was demand to see the
ANSI stamp on the sunglasses. Yea right,
show me a pair that actually has this. I took
three new pair before a judge and showed
him it was on the REMOVABLE sticker.
Asked who would actually leave that sticker
on the lenses. Ticket was dropped.”
We the people . . . plus one
BY RAY-MAN
President, Great Plains Chapter
Ya know something we don’t think about
much is: With the exception of the native
peoples of this land, all of us are immigrants.
Most of our forefathers came to this country
for a dream and a vision that caused
many to give their all in their great sacrifice
to preserve the Constitution of the
United States of America.
Other immigrants came to escape poverty,
war, and the law of their land, but everyone
came for freedom and a hope for
the future “so that a government of the
people and by the people shall not perish
from the face of the earth”.
As you already know, The Tooth Fairy is
my wife Ilka. You may know her as the
Queen of the corn or the founder of the
Sisterhood of the Traveling Tents. Someone
may describe her as the German red
head that rides a ‘95 1200 Sportster and
likes ApfelKorn.
What you may or may not know is that
until recently the Tooth Fairy (Ilka) was an
immigrant to the United States from Germany.
She was sworn in at the Greer
County court house in Mangum, Okla., by
a representative of the Immigration and
Naturalization Service Sept. 25, 2009.
Since this was a once in a life time event,
attendees included many children who
held up banners and signs from the local
school district, proud veterans from the
American Legion post 121, family and
friends from all walks of life, artists, shop
keepers, farmers, ranchers and yes, a politician
or two, Republican and Democratic,
and then there were bikers. You know the
kind, God bless them, red blooded American
bikers!
There were ABATE of Oklahoma members
from Hollis, Legion Riders from the
American Legion, post 121 in Mangum, Independents
from the surrounding area and
Naysayers who came from Midwest City.
The Tooth Fairy arrived at the court
house steps riding a blue Harley Davidson
Ultra Classic with two American flags flowing
in the wind from the back of the bike.
Amidst the applause and cheers upon her
arrival she dismounted and then flashed
me that famous wink and a smile and proceeded
to make her way to the podium.
Excited and proud, everyone knew that
history was in the making. This was it. This
was years of dedication and contribution.
Ilka was not born in the U.S. She chose to
be an American. This day and this moment
were just for her.
I have to tell you that I’ve been pretty
cynical lately. Not 24 hours a day mind you,
but often. Many of the acts of self serving
lobbyists that do nothing but oppress the
average working American is enough to test
the forbearance of good Christian men and
women throughout our nation, two wheels,
three wheels, or four! It’s a sad day when
so many hard working and devoted Americans
have to face and endure the loss of
their homes and jobs that forces them into
bankruptcy.
Today I feel our nation’s government is
divided and we find ourselves with too
much government on one side and too
much big business on the other and with
the future of our citizens stretched to their
limits by this unending political tug of war. I
am mindful of the many sacrifices made by
so many of our military to protect and secure
our liberty and freedom, the majority
of our government continues to endlessly
act and perform like a poorly run circus
act. I admit that in-spite of my heart’s desire
to maintain my path of faith it is sometimes
a real challenge to see past the current
politics of the greedy, the selfish and
self serving.
Often it seems like were surrounded by
the dark forces that are against us like
those who find it amusing to destroy instead
of build, the backbiters and back room
gossipers of our day who do nothing but
spend their days criticizing those who
strive to benefit our communities and our
country.
As I look for clarity and meaning in these
trying times, I am always brought back to
the foundation of our country, the American
people.
It was the volunteer militia of immigrants
who fired the first shot at Concord knowing
full well the horrible cost in blood that
lady liberty would demand of us through
battle. It was immigrants who volunteered
in the American Revolution that made us a
free nation just as it was the American
people who acted independently or served
through a public service agency that pulled
together on 9-11 and hurricane Katrina to
rescue and provide aid to so many. It’s my
neighbor who checks my mail and watches
my home when I’m away. It’s my waitress
that gets me a “Tea to go” when I finish my
meal.
It is the American people who will succeed
with honor when the government fails
in its responsibilities. It’s the people who
through their willing sacrifices make
America the greatest nation on earth. It’s
you!!!
Today I had a magic moment. One I’ve
never had before. One I’ve never seen before.
It was a very deep heart felt moment
that left me still in spirit and soul. That one
moment seemed to freeze time and space
around me if only for a second. Today’s
magic moment made me proud to be an
American veteran and worth every sacrifice
I ever made for my country. Today I
saw the birth of a new American.
A woman who is involved in her community,
A mother with a son proudly serving
in the Marine Corps and another proudly
serving in the Army, an ABATE member
and the founder of the Sisterhood of the
Traveling Tents.
Today as Ilka was being sworn in; I could
clearly see the look in her eyes and the
expression on her face. They bore witness
to her long time heart’s desire. At that
moment my wife and closest friend became
an American citizen.
Today my hope is for those good brothers
and sisters that dedicate their time and
energy in activities that benefit the citizens
of our country, I hope that in-spite of the
daily obstacles that seem to come between
you and the good work that you do that
you can also recognize the magic moments
of your life that as an American citizen enriches
your soul and brings peace and comfort
to your spirit. One country under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
God bless America and may God bless
you and renew your strength in our common
cause.
And now, it’s time to go for a nice long
ride with my new American wife, because
today “We the People” are plus one!
AOBJ Editor, Tulsa Chapter member
You’re holding the fifth monthly issue
of the ABATE of Oklahoma
Biker Journal in your hands, or
perhaps reading it online.
We hope you’re enjoying it.
The last five months have
been a learning experience;
we’ve tweaked it a bit here, a tad
there, and we have a lot more to
do.
Just as soon as we finish an
issue, we think we can take a
deep breath and not think about
it for a while ... and the next thing
you know, it’s time to publish
again.
But I have to be honest ... as a newspaper
publisher/editor since 1996, this has been
one of my more fun projects.
For our debut issue in June, we printed
1,000 copies of the AOBJ and distributed
them across the state. They were gone
almost faster than we could hand them out.
Each of the following two months, we
printed 2,000 copies and those, too,
disappeared quickly.
So last month, we printed
3,000 copies. I haven’t yet
heard from my associates
across the state, but I know
those distributed in Tulsa flew
off the shelves.
This month, we printed 3,500
copies, and my goal is to need
4,000 for the December issue
in order to meet the demand.
Those numbers tell me there
is an interest in what we’re
doing. There are motorcycle
riders out there who do care
about safety, education, and the political
process as it affects them.
It also tells me there is a niche market
reading this publication that advertisers
need to be reaching.
If you are a business or organization that
caters to the motorcycle community in any
way, your advertisement should be in the
ABATE of Oklahoma Biker Journal.
Contact me, Barbara Vice, at
okabatenews@yahoo.com, or call
918.232.8709. Leave a message if you call,
and I will return it.
You’ll most likely be surprised at how
affordable advertising can be in the Biker
Journal.
And if you’re a reader who has not yet
joined ABATE, just turn to page 15 and do
it. It’s simple, affordable, and your low
membership fee helps fund the Oklahoma
ABATE activities that help to ensure your
motorcycling safety and rights.
You can’t beat a deal like that.
ABATE of Oklahoma
BY TIGER MIKE REVERE
State Coordinator, ABATE of Oklahoma
Greetings, Riding Brothers and Sisters!
I sure hope the weather is going to start
drying out in Oklahoma soon. Of course, I
usually expect that to happen once the
Oklahoma State Fair is over! Hopefully,
everyone is enjoying the cooler
motorcycling weather now that Autumn is
here.
It’s hard to believe that, ten years ago
this month, I took over from Muskogee’s
Mark Baldwin as ABATE of Oklahoma
State Coordinator, since he needed to take
a job in Mortuary Affairs with the
Department of Defense. I don’t hear from
him, but I know he’s playing a valuable role
in supporting our Armed Forces. Awhile
back, I even saw a picture of him in the
middle of Iraq. Time sure flies when you’re
deep into the fight for Liberty!
Your State Motorcyclists Rights
Organization is currently laying the
groundwork for what we hope will be a
successful 2010 Oklahoma State
Legislative Session. We’re currently
networking with the Oklahoma Highway
Safety Office to get more Public Service
Announcements posted on the state’s
Electronic Bulletin Boards urging
motorists to Share the Road and look out
for motorcycles. If that idea is appealing,
you might want to fly one of our snappy
ABATE “Look Twice For Bikes” T-shirts!
As mentioned last month, ABATE, along
with the Oklahoma Confederation Of
Clubs, has been busily circulating petitions
for bike owners’ support of a Three Dollar
registration fee increase to fully fund
Motorcycling Safety, Awareness, and
Education programs. We’re submitting
those petitions to the Legislature this
month, in time for the House of
Representatives to go ahead with their
Interim Study on implementing those
programs beneficial to motorcyclists of all
backgrounds. Remember, folks: going
ahead with these programs will directly
contribute to reducing deaths and injuries
among our Riding Community. Both the
bill related to these programs and
ABATE’s “Red Light” Bill, allowing bikes
to proceed if they don’t trigger the signal
at controlled intersections, are in
committee to be considered as the 2010
Session begins in February.
ABATE’s Legislative Committee is still
looking into additional issues to be
addressed, in order to line up bill authors
and co-sponsors over the next couple of
months. Also on the Legislative front, we
had a number of our members attend the
Motorcycle Riders Foundation’s annual
Meeting Of The Minds convention, which
took place the end of September in
Minneapolis, MN, including Garry
Canaday, Carol King, John Pierce, and
Charlie and Bernie Williams.
I was able to check out Garry’s pictures
on MySpace—it looked like another
terrific MRF occasion. I understand it was
a successful, well attended event, and that
our Oklahoma attendees did us proud. I’ll
be very interested to get a recap of how
things went, which we’ll see in this paper,
and read about it in MRF Reports
Biker Journal November 2009 ◆ 5
Tiger Tales
newsletter. You can also get more
information on this important event by
going to the MRF Website at www.mrf.org
I’m very glad the Sooner State was wellrepresented
this year and, as both a fellow
ABATE Member and officer, I just wanted
to mention how proud I am to be associated
with all of the attendees, who are
experienced Freedom Fighters. Thanks
very much for your continued dedication
to furthering the cause of Riding Liberty
in our state.
ABATE spent a lot of time with these
important topics at the September Board
Meeting, along with finalizing logistics on
our annual “Party On The Plains”, which
took place the first weekend of October at
the Westlake Recreation Area in Enid. I
hope a good number of you were able to
attend, and that you enjoyed yourselves
in the company of your Biker Brothers and
Sisters. You’ll be able to read about how
successful this festive event was in the
Biker Journal. Many thanks to all our
ABATE Members who worked so hard to
make sure everything went well.
Additionally, our ABATE State Website
has been updated, and we’re keeping our
original domain address, so log onto
www.abateofoklahoma.org sometime and
see what we’re up to. Ms. Debi of our Tulsa
Chapter has graciously stepped forward
to volunteer to be our Web Mistress, and
I’m confident she’s going to do a terrific
job! She’s experienced with computer
operations, and has really shaped up the
Oklahoma Confederation Of Clubs website
already. Welcome Aboard, Ms.. Debi!
One major event ABATE also prepared
for was the annual Mid-South
Motorcyclists Improving Legislative
Effectiveness (M.I.L.E.) Seminar, which
happened October 16-18 at the Best
Western Hotel in Emporia, Kansas. Rights
Activists from a five-state area (Oklahoma,
Texas, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas)
participated in educational and informative
programs covering a wide variety of topics.
National-level Rights Organizations
including the American Motorcyclist
Association, National Coalition Of
Motorcyclists, and the Motorcycle Riders
Foundation were also represented. We’ll
come up with a more definitive recap on
how the M.I.L.E. went, along with pictures,
in our next month’s newspaper. Be sure
to obtain more information on these
valuable seminars in the future by checking
out www.midsouthmile.org
Tiger’s Tip O’ The Month:
Did you ever wonder how Road Gators
are born You know—those strips of tire
tread and chunks rubber we see
frequently on Oklahoma highways Sadly,
a lot of vehicle owners and operators out
there, from compacts to big-rigs, treat
having well-maintained vehicles like it’s
some kind of joke, and there are a bunch
of overloaded 18-wheelers out there with
underinflated retreads just waiting to add
to the Road Gator population. Be aware of
passing traffic, and keep an eye out for
possible parts which could fall off in your
path, as well as tires that might look like a
blowout waiting to happen.
Also, don’t forget that those Road Gators
throw a bunch of metal on the highway
from their steel belts, too. That could end
up putting you on the side of the road with
a flat tire, so avoid running over that stuff
if you can help it. It’s amazing what you
see blowing by you on Oklahoma
roadways, too.
I got passed not long ago by an econobox
doing 70 that had THREE of those
mini-spacesaver donut spares on it—You
can bet I gave him a wide berth!
You can see that the Sooner State
continues to lead in the fight to enhance
Motorcycling Liberty. The Eagles Lodge
in Chickasha hosted September’s
Oklahoma Confederation Of Clubs
meeting, where over 300 Bikers of all
backgrounds convened to listen to Gimme
Jimmy of Texas, founder of the U.S.
Defenders Program. This is a valuable
system whereby motorcycle clubs and
organizations can respond in an organized
fashion to write, call, and visit their
Legislators en masse when ABATE issues
a Legislative Call To Action. It’s similar to
the Committees of Correspondence
which were so successful during the
American Revolution. Brook Bullock and I
represent ABATE to the U.S. Defenders
Program, so expect more information
from both of us in the future, especially
when the Oklahoma Legislative Session
begins.
Next month, I’ll have more information
as to the ABATE State Elections results
and who our new officers will be, but I want
to close with a heartfelt thought and a
prayer for my dear friend Charles “Roach”
Hoffmann of Missouri, who just passed
away from heart problems. Roach was a
patch holding club member and a longtime
Motorcycling Liberty Defender, holding
memberships in a number of SMROs
including ABATE of Oklahoma. At the
time of his death, he was the Regional
Chief Of Staff for Aid to Injured
Motorcyclists (A.I.M.), and traveled all
over the country assisting Bikers down on
their luck. Roach was also an Army
Veteran—a Special Forces NCO with
multiple Vietnam combat tours under his
belt.
I was gratified to see this special
individual recognized with a Silver Spoke
Liberty Award at the NCOM Convention
this past May in Reno, NV. Please
remember his family, friends and Club
Brothers in your thoughts and prayers. I
was honored and privileged to have been
his friend, and his loss leaves a void in my
life difficult to fill. Ride Free Forever,
“Roach” Hoffmann!
I also need to mark the sudden passing
away of Sam Arab of the Christian
Motorcyclist Association. Sam (AKA the
“Savage Syrian”) was very active in our
Motorcycling Community while he lived
in Oklahoma, and continued to be so when
he moved out to California. He was an
ABATE Member in both states, and on the
CMA’s Prison Ministry Team. He loved
the Lord, riding his motorcycle, and
reaching out to help his fellow human
beings of all backgrounds, and will be
sorely missed by his many friends and
loved ones. Please remember his family,
friends and the CMA in your thoughts and
prayers—Ride Free Forever, Sam!!
I know it seems as if we’ve touched on
the departure of quite a few Motorcycling
Family members lately, but it’s part of the
Circle of Life that all of us are a part of.
Let’s be sure to celebrate the good times
together as well, and enjoy the weddings,
the new family arrivals, and the downhome
close-knitted spirit of the Road which
comes from a common bond of loving
Freedom on two and three wheels.
As we approach Thanksgiving and
celebrate the harvest in this land of bounty,
Motorcyclist fatalities
plummet in Texas
While most states across the country
continue to experience increases in motorcycle
accidents and fatalities in the wake
of increasing motorcycle usage, the state
of Texas has reported a significant decrease
in rider deaths due largely to safety
and awareness programs initiated by motorcyclists
and the Texas Department of
Transportation.
According to TxDOT, fatalities declined
more than 23% over the same time period
from 2008, with 264 deaths reported from
January 1 - August 24, 2009, versus 344
deaths the previous year.
“I would say this is a direct result of the
Texas Transportation Institute put together
to cut down on Traffic fatalities, especially
for motorcyclist,” explained Sputnik,
State Chairman of the Texas Motorcycle
Rights Association (TMRA-II) and
Chairman of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists
Legislative Task Force (NCOM-
LTF).
Sputnik gave further credit to the Motorcycle
Awareness Program put together
by TxDOT at riders’ insistence and added;
“We have very high hopes that SB 1967 (a
multi-faceted motorcycle safety bill enacted
earlier this year) and the year round airing
of Public Service Announcements, increased
penalties for negligence and Rider
Training will bring that number down even
farther.”
Oregon enacts mandatory
training for new motorcyclist
Oregon has become the third state to
pass a law requiring all new motorcyclists
regardless of age to pass a rigorous training
course, in hopes of reducing accidents
and fatalities. Current law requires such
course completion for prospective riders
under age 21.
The new law, Senate Bill 546, passed by
the state legislature this year will phase in
the requirement for all first-time bikers
over the next six years. Lawmakers also
voted to double the fine for riders caught
without the proper license, increasing the
penalty to $720 starting in January.
Team Oregon trained about ten-thousand
riders last year, and the majority of them
were older than 21. More than 4,400 people
bypassed the class in favor of a free skills
test at the DMV, but soon all first-time riders
will have to shell out about $150 to take
the Team Oregon course, which is administered
by Oregon State University .
The change in the law was supported by
one of the state’s chief motorcycle lobbies,
BikePAC. Executive director Nic Oliver
says he’s been riding for 35 years and he
thinks the new requirement will save lives:
“A trained rider is a safe rider. And we’re
trying to cut down the deaths, especially
the unnecessary deaths of people that are
making stupid mistakes because they don’t
know what to do.”
A similar mandatory training bill was recently
passed in North Carolina , but was
amended to require rider education courses
only for those under 18. Senate Bill 64,
which also limits learners permits to 12
months with one 6 month renewal, was
signed into law Aug. 26 by Governor Mike
Easley and goes into effect Jan. 1, 2011.
Noise laws defeated
The Massachusetts Motorcycle Association
has announced that a proposed noise
ordinance in North Reading, MA that would
have required an EPA Stamp on motorcycle
exhaust systems and stricter noise
controls has been defeated.
Prior to a recent meeting of town Selectmen,
MMA Chairman Dave Condon met
with MMA Member Bill McGarry, a local
resident, to review the warrant and the
pertinent Massachusetts laws. During an
earlier town meeting, the legality of the
EPA stamp requirement was discussed in
detail and ultimately dropped, but an alternative
proposal was amended into the Warrant
which would have made noise levels
and testing requirements stricter than
those currently in Massachusetts General
Law (MGL).
With significant support from McGarry,
who attended both public hearings and
spoke on behalf of the MMA and motorcyclists
across Massachusetts, the Selectmen
and North Reading Chief of Police recognized
that the town cannot impose laws
stricter than the Commonwealth — instead,
the town acknowledged that enforcement
of the existing MGL coupled with appropriate
education could be a far more effective
tool, and by vote of the selectmen the
warrant was removed from the town
agenda.
Meanwhile, following much lobbying and
testimony from local bikers, a hotly debated
noise ordinance in Portland , Maine
was unanimously rejected by the City
Council and sent back to the Public Safety
Committee for more work.
The proposal would have enforced the
federal law that all motorcycles made after
Dec. 31, 1982 must have mufflers with an
EPA label certifying the exhaust system
meets EPA standards. A biker riding a
motorcycle within city limits without an EPA
sticker on the muffler would have been
fined $50. The ordinance would have been
the first of its kind in Maine , and supporters
said its adoption would have made it
easier to pass a similar state law.
Opponents, including the United Bikers
of Maine (UBM), said the measure would
discriminate against motorcyclists and
could cost the city tourism dollars by discouraging
motorcyclists from visiting Portland
.
Motorcycle noise continues to be a contentious
and controversial issue across the
country, with places like Boston and New
York contemplating stricter laws.
U.S. Senate passes amendment
protecting knife owners
In response to a U.S. Customs proposal
that would outlaw one-handed assisted opening
knives by redefining them as
switchblades, on July 9th the U.S. Senate
unanimously passed an amendment to the
Federal Switchblade Act as part of the
Homeland Security appropriations bill to
protect by law 35 million Americans who
own pocketknives.
The bipartisan measure would exempt
assisted-opening knives that can only be
opened with “exertion applied to the blade
by hand, wrist or arm” from a federal law
that criminalizes commerce in
switchblades. Assisted opening knives are
highly desired by hunters, anglers, farmers,
ranchers, firefighters, law enforcement
and emergency personnel and others who
may need to open a knife with only one
hand.
Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said, “Without
this amendment, there is a real danger
that 80 percent of the pocketknives sold in
the U.S. could be classified as illegal
switchblades, which would hurt knife and
tool manufacturers across the nation.”
The measure is now under consideration
in a House-Senate Conference Committee..
Australian Biker groups angry
over tough law proposals
Biker organizations in Australia say that
introducing a zero alcohol tolerance for
motorcycle riders in Queensland would be
discriminatory. The State Government is
considering the option in an attempt to reduce
the road toll.
Lindsay Granger from Motorcycling
Queensland says riders should not be
singled out. “The only other groups that
have zero alcohol content are drivers who
are responsible for the safety of others or
drivers who are inexperienced,” Granger
said. “There doesn’t appear to be any clear
logic why experienced motorcyclists
should be treated any differently from experienced
motorists in any other type of
vehicle.”
The zero tolerance effort is also under
critique by members of the United Motorcycle
Council of Queensland, a newly
formed organization comprised of 17 clubs
ranging from outlaw patch holders to
church groups united to fight efforts of law
enforcement from enacting discriminatory
legislation aimed at clubs.
Weird News:
Beware drunkards crossing
A German court ruled on September 14
that a motorcyclist who collided with a
drunken pedestrian during a beer fest
shared blame for the accident because she
should have expected the road to be full of
party-goers.
The female biker, who was driving at a
legal speed of 25-31 mph hit a man who
was crossing the road against a red light
during the Munich beer festival which attracts
millions of revelers every year.
The court held her “50 percent responsible”
for the accident. “During the October
(beer) festival there are, it is well known
to the authorities, a large number of drunk
people on the streets at night, who can not
always be trusted to observe the rules of
the road,” the court said. “The motorcyclist
should have adjusted her speed to be
able to avoid these people,” added the statement.
The woman was ordered to pay half of
the damages, estimated at 2,500 euros
($3,600 US), and her bid for 1,000 euros
compensation for minor injuries sustained
in the accident was refused.
Lone Star Rally discontinues
use of RFID surveillance chips
As the National Coalition of Motorcyclists
advised our NCOM Member Groups earlier
this year, the Lone Star Rally in
Galveston , Texas had issued parking
passes to all rally participants that contained
RFID chip technology which allowed them
to be “tracked” and filmed during the rally,
and riders were offered for sale a personalized
DVD showing themselves at the
rally.
Each coded pass was embedded with an
RFID (radio frequency identification) chip
that incorporates the use of electromagnetic
or electrostatic coupling in the radio
frequency (RF) portion of the electromagnetic
spectrum to uniquely identify an object
or animal, or in this case each motorcycle
affixed with a pass. A link on the Lone
Star Rally website said, “The chip technology
will allow us to pinpoint you and produce
a DVD of the entire rally event with
personalized footage of you and your bike
on the Strand !” Such surveillance technology
has been proposed for other bike rallies
as well, such as Sturgis and Daytona.
This issue was brought to the attention
of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists
board of directors, and discussions ensued
about opposing such invasive chipping if
it’s without the rider’s knowledge and consent.
“It was never our intent to do harm to the
Lone Star Rally, but felt obligated to inform
our NCOM Member Groups of this practice,”
said Richard M. Lester, AIM/NCOM
founder.
A.I.M. Rep Denise Nobs, whose husband
Louie serves on the board as NCOM Christian
Unity Liaison, wrote about the use and
possible misuse of such RFID chips earlier
this year in the AIM/NCOM Legal &
Legislative Newsletter to bring awareness
to the issue.
Lone Star Rally organizers have since
announced the discontinuation of the RFID
chipped parking passes, and had this to say
on the Homepage of their website
(www.lonestarrally.com): “It seems that
people have either not seen our explanations,
misunderstood how we use the
(RFID) technology or just hate it! We love
our riders and don’t want to use anything
they don’t like so, for these reasons, we
are cancelling the use of any RFID technology
at the Lone Star Rally.”
Billed as “The World’s Largest Halloween
Party”, the Lone Star Rally will take
place Oct. 27 - Nov. 1, and NCOM encourages
its members to attend and support
the event.
Meeting of the Minds 2009
BY CAROL KING
Secretary Tulsa Chapter
Just how does one describe two and a
half days spent with about 450 bikers
Besides fun, it was educational, inspiring,
exciting and a whole lot more. New
friendships made, old friends met again.
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation’s
25th Annual Meeting of the Minds was
held on Sept. 24 to 27 in Minneapolis, Minn.
John Pierce and Carry Canaday left on the
Monday before to ride up. If I didn’t have a
new job, I definitely would have been riding
with them. Oh well, next year. So I flew up
Thursday afternoon, arriving at the
Sheridan about 10:30 p.m.
My first impression was the genuine
brother(sister)hood. Everyone there had
one thing in common. A heartfelt
commitment to bikers’ rights and they
walked their talk.
Friday and Saturday are made up of a
morning and afternoon session, and two
breakouts after each of the big sessions.
All of them were packed full of interesting
and useful information, presented by really
cool people. The hardest part was deciding
what breakouts to attend. By the end of
the first day I was running on information
overload.
The highlight of the conference is the
banquet on Saturday night. During the
banquet, awards are given, various SMRO’s
either donate or pledge money to the
MRF and then there is the live auction.
The food was good and the company was
great. ABATE of Oklahoma, Tulsa Chapter
pledged $250. Several SMRO’s gave
several thousands. All this money goes to
support the MRF’s office in Washington
DC, and cover the salaries of the few paid
employees, which includes Jeff Hennie,
Vice President for Governmental Relations
and the full-time lobbyist.
Charlie Williams, Oklahoma’s MRF
representative for a long time, was awarded
a Lifetime Membership for his
many years of dedicated work.
I think I was told there have
been only 21 lifetime
memberships awarded to
date. This was an honor
well deserved.
Congratulations, Charlie!
ABATE of Oklahoma’s
State Sergeant-at-Arms,
Garry Canaday, made
Oklahoma proud. The
Sooner State got noticed
thanks to him.
Next year the Meeting of the Minds will
be held in Peoria, Ill., which is about an
hour and a half from Chicago.
This year there were five proud
Oklahomans in Minneapolis, with a year’s
advance warning, I hope to see more faces
from home in Illinois. You will not regret it.
You do not have to be a member of the
MRF to attend.
WOW what an experience
BY CHARLI CHANDLER
Stafe Safety Education & Awareness Director
Let me start out by saying that this was
my first time attending the MOTM, and
WOW what an experience it was!
I have previously attended two
NCOM’s, and while both were
great experiences, this just
blew them away.
The level of organization
and the expertise of the
speakers were unparalleled.
This having been the 25 th
anniversary of the MOTM
lent to a very special feeling
and theme of nostalgia and
acknowledging how far this vision
has come.
Spearheaded by Kirk “Hardtail” Willard
and Mark Buckner, they seamlessly set the
stage for a weekend of legacies and
memories yet to come.
The General Sessions were nicely
divided between pertinent current
information, mixed with occasional
historical events and people of interest,
both past and present.
Amazingly, they managed to keep to a
timely schedule, which left plenty of time
for networking and fun social interaction
(which I did my best to make the most of).
It is my honest opinion that the time
spent doing those two things are just as, if
not even more important, than the
sessions themselves. I know I made many
contacts and friends that are sure to endure
for many years to come.
The break-out sessions were both
wonderful and a bit frustrating, because
unfortunately, you had to make a choice
as to which one to attend in which time
slot. Luckily, with more than one attendee
from our organization, we split up and will
have the opportunity to share what each
of us learned individually.
This most definitely makes me want to
attend next year’s conference even more
so. That way I can catch first hand what I
wasn’t able to attend this year! Luckily I
had the guidance of those with many more
years of attendance than I, to help lead me
down the path of getting the most out of
this experience.
There is no way I could go into details
about the sessions, or what I learned and
keep this short enough to fit into a
reasonably sized article.
For detailed information I highly
recommend reading the MRF news
releases, and making a huge effort to
attend a conference in the future!
Biker Journal November 2009 ◆ 11
Nifty mirrors, costly purchase
BY PAUL BRINKER
Safety Officer, ABATE of Oklahoma
Have you seen the ad for the nifty
mirrors Ford has come up with They alert
a driver to something (like a motorcycle)
that is in your blind spot.
Trouble is, it’s a $1500 option. My guess
is not a lot of people will be shelling out
money for this nifty invention. After
discussing this with a friend of mine he
told me about something he had found that
will almost eliminate blind spots and it is
100% FREE!!
All you have to do is readjust your
outside rear view mirrors.. Set your inside
mirror as you normally would. To adjust
the driver’s side mirror put your head up
against the window or door frame then
adjust the mirror so that you can just see
the end of your vehicle. To adjust the
passenger side, if you have one, sit in the
middle of the vehicle and adjust it so you
can just see the end of your vehicle.
Now when you are driving you will not
see what you are used to and it WILL take
some getting used to. When vehicles come
up on either side of you, instead of
disappearing in a blind spot you will see
them in your mirror untill they are even
with your peripheral vision.
This does work! I have been driving like
this for two months now and am still getting
used to it. You will use the inside mirror a
little more and if you move your head from
side to side you will still see what you used
to when the mirrors were adjusted
“normally”. Try it, if you don’t like it you
can always put the mirrors back like they
were.
So, can you do this with a motorcycle
Yep. Do this on a side street or when you
are in VERY LIGHT traffic. Put your bike
Driver indicted
for reckless
homicide
Killed biker while painting nails!
The distracted driver who ran a red light
and killed a Lake Zurich motorcyclist has
been indicted on a reckless homicide
charge.
Laura Hunt ran into Anita Zaffke last June
near Lake Zurich. the impact threw Zaffke
from her motorcycle.
She suffered chest and abdominal
injuries. Hunt told investigators she was
painting her nails at the time of the crash.
She was initially charged with failing to
reduce her speed. Hunt faces up to five
years in prison if she’s convicted.
in the left third (close to the dividing line)
then adjust your left mirror so that you
can see about 1/4 of the lane behind you.
Trouble is, it’s a $1,500
option. My guess is not a
lot of people will be
shelling out money for
this nifty invention. After
discussing this with a
friend of mine he told
me about something he
had found that will
almost eliminate
blind spots and it is
100% FREE!
Then move to the right third (close to the
curb/shoulder) and adjust the right mirror
the same as the left.
Again, this will take some getting used
to and if you move your head a little you
will still see what you used to see. The
result is the same as it is in a four wheel
vehicle. Blind spots are pretty much gone.
Just did a road trip to Indy and back and
was amazed at the difference it made. And
YES, you still need to turn your head and
check for traffic. Mirrors are just a tool to
be used—not trusted. That’s what your
eyes are for.
Give it a try, I know I like it, although I
still have to resist the urge to put the
mirrors back where they were.
That’s it. Later, Paul.
12 ◆ November 2009 Biker Journal ABATE of Oklahoma
News from the Motorcycle Riders Foundation
Distracted Driving Summit
Distraction: The performance
degradation of a primary task upon
introduction of a secondary act.
Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood
convened an important two-day meeting
in Washington DC last week to shine a light
on the increasing incidents and
opportunities to be distracted while
operating a car or public transportation
vehicle. Naturally, the Motorcycle Riders
Foundation (MRF) was represented at that
meeting.
With the amount of distraction from
increased use of cell phones (some with
full keyboards), GPS systems, DVD
players and the vast array of other
complex video displays at an all-time high,
it should not come as a surprise that the
opportunity for an operator of any vehicle
to become distracted has risen significantly
in just the past few years.
Distracted driving is certainly not a new
issue. One could argue that the minute
someone in Detroit came up with the idea
to put lighters and ashtrays in cars, or when
a little company called Motorola produced
the first in-car audio entertainment device,
or when Ray Kroc sold his first burger out
of the window of his restaurant, distracted
driving was born.
What’s truly startling is the dramatic rise
in the amount of “texting” people are doing
behind the wheel. Some stats say sending
and receiving text messages while driving
is up 500 percent in just the past two years.
Because of the complexities involved with
typing on a handheld keyboard, some
experts refer to texting while driving as
the perfect storm for disaster.
The two-day meeting brought together
experts of all types including auto
manufacturers, cell phone providers,
government officials, state legislators,
behavioral experts and even a rocket
scientist from NASA who specializes in
the distraction of pilots under heavy
cognitive load. Cognitive load is the amount
of brain power you use to complete a task,
relative to the complexity of the task, or
as we learned, thinking about or talking
about anything overly emotional. The
other forms of distraction are visual (eyes
off the road) or manual (hands off the
wheel).
We know that distraction is a problem
for all road users, and particulary
motorcyclists and other vulnerable road
users, but what can we do about it Ray
LaHood said it best when he opened the
meeting with the statement, “You cannot
legislate behavior.” Eighteen states and
DC have enacted texting-while-driving
bans. While this is a good start, it’s sort of
missing the mark. Banning texting may
remove one part of the equation, but that
means it’s still ok to eat a burrito, watch a
movie, paint your nails, pick something up
off the passenger side floor, or talk on a
hands-free cell phone, all while checking
out your hair in the flip-down vanity mirror.
Any ban at the state level should be against
all forms of distracted driving, not just a
few specific forms.
There oughta be a law
Senator Chuck Schumer from NY and
Amy Klobuchar from MN both made an
appearance at the event to plug some
legislation they both support. Their bill,
inappropriately called the Alert Drivers
Act, would force states to pass texting bans
or forfeit a whopping 25% of their road
money. The feds have a long history of
using this sort of “carrot and stick”
approach to forcing states to enact
legislation, and it’s problematic for a variety
of reasons.
The MRF simply cannot support the bills
(S. 1536 and HR 3535) to force states to
pass texting bans for the simple reason
2009 OKC Motorcycle
that this is the same method that is used
to force states to pass helmet laws, and
blackmailing the states to enact legislation
that they may or may not want should be
strongly discouraged.
The two-day meeting is certainly a good
start to the conversation about distracted
driving, but far too much focus was given
to texting instead of keeping all distractions
on the table. We at the MRF hope that
discussion continues, and we look forward
to working with the powers that be to put
distracted driving on the decline.
Motorcycle crash
causation study update
As promised, the Motorcycle Riders
Foundation (MRF) is closely following the
progress of the Federal Highway
Administration’s (FHWA) ongoing
motorcycle crash causation study. Vehicle
fatalities fell last year, while motorcycle
fatalities rose. We all know that a large
factor in the increase was the record
motorcycle registrations and motorcycle
sales, but no one is certain why a lot of
motorcycle accidents occur. The last crash
study done for motorcycles was in the
1970s, and so much has changed since
then that the motorcycle safety
community has aggressively pushed for a
more up-to-date, relevant study.
“Having a better understanding of what
causes these crashes will help us improve
roadway safety for everyone,” said FHWA
Administrator Mendez. “Keeping people
safe on America’s roads is Secretary
LaHood’s top priority at the Department
of Transportation.”
The motorcycle crash causation study
will be the federal government’s first major
in-depth analysis of motorcycle safety in
nearly three decades. A provision in the
“Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient
Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for
Users” (SAFETEA-LU) requires the
study, which will be conducted by the
FHWA in partnership with Oklahoma State
University (OSU).
OSU houses one of the U.S. Department
of Transportation’s 10 National University
Transportation Centers, and it receives
federal grants to conduct transportation
research. One of the holdups of the study
was that OSU was required to secure
funds to match the $3 million provided by
the Feds. OSU did not have an extra $3
million, so a waiver was granted allowing
the study to move forward with a smaller
budget. The study won’t be as large as the
original concept, but the MRF has been
assured it will be rigorous and scientific.
Researchers will evaluate data from
hundreds of motorcycle crashes to help
identify common factors - including road
configurations, environmental conditions
and rider experience. The study’s focus is
to look at how these factors may be
affected by countermeasures that, if
effectively implemented, will prevent
motorcycle crashes or lessen the harm
when they occur.
The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) conducted a pilot
study to develop the protocols for the fullscale
causation research. NHTSA also was
responsible for the earlier motorcycle
causation study, which was completed in
1981.
Between 1997 and 2008, motorcycle
rider fatalities increased from 2,116 to
5,290 - a 150 percent jump, according to
U.S. Department of Transportation’s
Fatality Analysis Reporting System. In
2008 alone, deaths due to motorcycle
crashes rose by an estimated 2.2 percent
while all other vehicle classes saw
reductions in fatalities.
Results of the current study are still 3-4
years away.
A.B.A.T.E. makes progress
BY AJ “JESTER” WHITE
ABATE Chapter N.W. 69
The month of August saw a new
communication tool open up for all
members of ABATE of Oklahoma. As
many of you know, at the August state
meeting there was a call out for someone
to create some type of messaging venue
for all members to utilize. With this being
said I opened up a new “Yahoo Group” and
A.B.A.T.E. Of Oklahoma State Members
Yahoo Group was born.
The intent and purpose of this board, or
forum if you like, was to unite every
member in the state so that all could
communicate ideas, ride gatherings, and
just good ol’ fashioned fellowship. The
concept was very easy: give everybody a
place to meet, chat, and get to know his or
her fellow brother and sisters from across
the state.
I am proud to say that so far I believe
this tool to be successful. Currently there
are already 37 members active on the
board.
The new board isn’t just for chatting, but
also serves a couple other purposes.
There is a “How To” area, “For Sale” area,
and an “Address Book” for all members to
utilize. These three options are located
under the “Applications” button on the left
hand side of the screen. But the board
doesn’t stop there; you can also upload
your pictures, get fliers for upcoming
events, and other things. This venue is an
all around networking area for all of our
brothers and sisters to come to. Below you
will find information for joining our group.
Motorcycles
in the media
BY PAUL BRINKER
Safety Officer, ABATE of Oklahoma
I was talking with a friend of mine the
other day about seeing more motorcycles
on TV, both in ads and on shows. We
agreed that what we had seen mostly put
bikers in a positive light - with the
exception of that CSI rerun where the
bikers were smuggling cocaine and killing
undercover cops. Tsk-Tsk.
Other places that motorcycles have been
showing up is in ads, with the GEICO
cavemen on sport bikes, and Progressive
with cyclists in thier ads, too. Also the little
dog that got lost and picked up by a sidecar
rider, and the little boy catching the wind
for his grandpa got a sidecar ride too, as
did the guy hawking fast internet (Ural rig).
Ford has futuristic bikes in their Focus
ad, and the DWI ads have been revamped
to show a rider with a full face helmet full
of beer.
Hey it’s always nice to be included, I
think. Most of these ads, with the
exception of the insurance companies,
really had nothing to do with promoting
motorcycles, but they still put us out there,
mostly in a positive light, for everybody to
see. Maybe, just maybe, it will make
somebody, somewhere, more aware of
motorcyclists. And maybe that will stop an
accident or two—maybe.
Just one more thing, as soon as John
Travolta gets over his son’s death there
will be a Wild Hogs II. I know Tiger Mike
can’t wait for that one.
Date change
I have noticed that there are some flyers
being displayed that have the date for the
General Membership Meeting at Quartz
Mountain as being on January 2, 2010. It
is actually on the 9th. It is the second
weekend of the month. Please make sure
all of our chapters know and post the
correct dates. Thanks.
16 ◆ November 2009 Biker Journal ABATE of Oklahoma
Travelin’ with 2R (continued from page 1)
ABATE of Oklahoma Biker Journal. We
just don’t seem to be able to ever have
enough copies. I think some were even
trading lies! Regardless, our booth is a hot
spot at this event every year.
My Three Sands ABATE Brothers & Sisters
had a great ride over and were very
thankful to have our campsite sitting there
waiting for us when we arrived. The fine
folks at the fairgrounds were kind enough
to allow us to reserve an ABATE camp site,
so if you are coming over to camp with us
all ya have to do is ask for the ABATE campsite
and someone will guide you to it. I think
that the only thing missing from camp this
year was Top’s cookin. I sure hope Boop
heals up real soon.
Once camp was set and the booth was up
and rolling Doc kept everyone entertained
for the rest of the weekend. We had more
ABATE Brothers in the games this year
than I can remember in recent past. Alvin
from Rogers Co. ABATE and The Picture
Man from NW 69 ABATE had some good
competition from The Kid in the slow races,
from 1 up to 4 up they ran them all. Lucky
Andy and Dayne Deerkiller from Three
Sands added to the fun in the bike games.
The competition in the bike games is something
that local legends are made of, if you
ride away a winner you have REALLY accomplished
something.
Nelson had more vendors and some new
ones too. I had the honor of being asked if
I would help Doc with the people awards
after we did the ABATE of Oklahoma tattoo
contest. The winner of the men’s black
and white is one of the nicest pieces that I
have seen in a while. Thanks to Renee and
Iceman for helping judge. We really are
getting some awesome ink in this great
state now that it has been legalized!
After the bike show the bands took over
the stage and played till all hours and kept
everyone rockin. As always CMA was
there to help everyone get jump started
with a lil coffee and a prayer, thanks guys it
is much appreciated. I also need to thank
all of the dedicated ABATE members that
we have that helped at the booth. Thank
you all. Chisholm Trail 412, Muskogee,
NW #69, Rogers Co., Three Sands and
Tulsa chapters of ABATE all had folks give
a hand and it didn’t go unnoticed. This is
what Brotherhood is all about.
I got home from Pawhuska on Sunday
afternoon and had to get packed, locked
and loaded and ready to ride over to meet
up with JP for our ride up to Minneapolis
for the Meeting of the Minds. 5:30 a.m.
came way too early, but rise and shine I
did. I got dressed and ready to leave with a
good close eye on the weather. Storms were
in the forecast for the first half of our lil
jaunt. Lucky for me I had clear skies overhead
as I climbed on my scoot, but the lightning
to the East didn’t look like much fun.
On with the rain gear, oh yeah! I don’t so
much mind riding in the rain, but I sure
don’t like starting in it. I sucked it up, kissed
the ol lady goodbye and hit the road.
A couple of hours later and never a raindrop
on Sheryl’s paint made me hope that
we could miss the rain. It was not to be. JP
and I had plans for leaving his place at 9 but
after watching a lil radar it was decided to
hang back a couple of hours and let the
worst of the storms pass. We did leave out
just after 11 and had a great dry ride for
about 35 miles. Gotta love rain gear. Most
of our first day would be plagued with rain.
Sometimes heavy but most of the time just
drizzle.
After a day of riding in the rain it was nice
to find a hotel in Des Moines, Iowa. We had
a great time catching up and discussing the
days ride. The next morning it was a tad
cooler and after a quick fuel stop we had
Minneapolis in our sights. It was a great
ride the rest of the way with a stop for lunch
in Clear Water. After the 800+ mile ride it
was nice to pull into the hotel for the Meeting
of the Minds. After getting settled in
and meeting Cindy Hodges, Eric Hampton
and Doc Ski, Mike and Mary Berger were
kind enough to chauffer us out to a local
dive for some tacos. It was a great way to
end an excellent day.
Ink at Biker Days in the Osage
The next couple of days I had the privilege
of attending the MRF board meeting.
They only kicked me out once, for employee
evals. It was a true eye opener to
see how they operate such a large organization.
Thursday was when most folks started
to show up, and show up they did. I met so
many great folks that it made my head spin.
It was also the day that you get to “Meet
the Board.” This is a very interesting way
of getting everyone involved and introduced
to one another. After all of the board
members have been introduced one person
from each state takes the mike and
introduces themselves and gives a brief on
their state’s status in the motorcycle rights
world.
I am very pleased to have had the opportunity
to tell everyone that we have added
two new chapters and more than doubled
our membership in the last year; I also gave
a very brief account of our legislative efforts
with the $3 bill and the red light bill. It
was great to get such positive feedback
about our growth when so many others
are shrinking in this time of economic hardship.
I was able to find most of the states
that make up the Mid South Mile and get
to know them a bit better. I found that the
State Coordinator for Arkansas, Cloud, and
I have a lot in common. It was really good
to get to know him. We took the opportunity
to get to know many new friends until
the wee hours.
Friday started with a presentation of the
colors and an update to the members from
the board. The highlight of the morning
for me had to be the Defenders Program
by Gimmy Jimmy. I am so glad that we have
that in place here in Oklahoma. After lunch
we headed into the breakout sessions, of
which there is no way that you can attend
them all. I chose the ones that I thought
would help ABATE of Oklahoma the most,
learned as much as I could in hopes that I
can be as helpful to our cause as possible.
Friday night the hospitality room was
opened but the pool was closed, which
didn’t stop everyone from a quick swim. It
gave me an excellent chance to get a few
pics of some nice tats, ya know how I love
great artwork. The hospitality in Minnesota
was awesome. I had a really good time
getting to know people better and meeting
more folks. I even had the chance to sneak
off for a shake. Lucky for me there was a
Dairy Queen in the parking lot of the hotel.
Saturday was another fine day. We started
off with, one of the highlights for me, Senator
Dave Zien discussing with us Bikers
Rights from the eyes of the elected official.
It is always interesting to see some of
our issues from the other side of the desk.
After lunch and some more break out sessions
was the long awaited kilts vs. bibs tug
o war. I had a great time, but we did get it
handed to us. I still contest their victory
because so few of them were in bibs and
we were all in kilts on my side of the rope.
Oh well, there is always next year.
The event was capped off with an awards
banquet and auction in the Grand Ballroom
where I was lucky enough to have Charli
from North Carolina join me for dinner.
Hardtail did a wonderful job as master of
ceremonies. After the dinner, awards, auctions
and of course dessert, it was time to
change into something a tad more comfy
and make my way around the hotel and
say my goodbyes as I had plans on leaving
in the early hours without JP. He would be
on his own for the ride home. I hope you
forgive me Brother. It was hard to get all of
my goodbyes in, I had such a good time
getting to know everyone and look forward
to seeing them again. It did take me a good
while to get my farewells said and back to
my room to pack.
All in all I think I laid down well after 12a.m.
only to get up at 5 to hit the road. I was
makin tracks toward home by 6 and was
doing good on time. I stopped for lunch in
Iowa and then later for a power nap and
fuel just before I got into Missouri. I try
like the dickens not to spend any money in
any state that has a helmet law. I made it
through Missouri and into Kansas where it
feels like I should be able to see my house
from the state line.
After a long day of riding I pulled into my
drive at 8:30p.m. I was exhausted physically
but my spirit was in hyper drive from
such an exciting week and an awesome ride
home! Till next time keep the shiny side
up, even if it’s not too shiny anymore. Right,
Sheryl. I promised you a good detail and
you will get it……..
Football players wear helmets
How many times have you heard
“Football players wear helmets; why
shouldn’t you”
This lengthy but interesting article about
former star football players with
debilitating brain injuries shows how
useless helmets can be: http://
men.style.com/gq/features/
landingid=content_10980
Excerpts: Omalu thought: I’ve seen so
many cases of people like motorcyclists
wearing helmets. On the surface is
nothing, but you open the skull and the
brain is mush.
“Helmets are not the answer. The brain
has a certain amount of play inside the
skull. It’s buoyed up in the cerebral spinal
fluid. It sits in this fluid, floats.
When the head suddenly stops, the brain
continues, reverberates back.
So when I hit, boom, my skull stops, but
my brain continues forward for about a
centimeter.
Boom, boom, it reverberates back. So
you could have padding that’s a foot thick.
It’s not going to change the acceleration/
deceleration phenomenon.
Excellent job
Well, once again, Cleo and the Lawton
Chapter did an excellent job. The benefit/
poker run was a success.
The ride itself was about 125 miles. The
weather was a little cool in the early
morning, but as the day went on, it got
better and better.
The whole thing was planned and
executed very well. There were about 50
bikes, lots of auction items, door prizes, a
50/50, plenty of food and a good time for
all who attended.
Great Plains Chapter was represented
by five people, four of whom are members:
Myself (Jukebox ), Scott Shaw ( Shaw-Man
), Dereck Bullock, Geppy Bullock, and
their son, Eric.
If anyone knows of any rides that we may
be interested in that hasnt already been
mentioned, Please let us know.
