OF LOSS ADJUSTERS<br />

<strong>Be<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>first</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Chartered</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Loss</strong> Adjusters opens the door<br />

to an excit<strong>in</strong>g career <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>surance

Every day through the media we hear <strong>of</strong> losses; a fire<br />

<strong>in</strong> a restaurant, a crane which collapsed on<br />

a build<strong>in</strong>g site, a lorry overturn<strong>in</strong>g on a motorway<br />

or a major flood <strong>in</strong> the Midlands. Generally speak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

these losses are covered by <strong>in</strong>surance and when a<br />

claim is made, dependent on its size, a <strong>Chartered</strong> <strong>Loss</strong><br />

Adjuster is <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>in</strong>structed to settle the claim to the<br />

satisfaction <strong>of</strong> both the policyholder and the <strong>in</strong>surer.<br />

What is a <strong>Chartered</strong><br />

<strong>Loss</strong> Adjuster<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependent claims specialists<br />

who usually take <strong>in</strong>structions<br />

from <strong>in</strong>surers, but may also<br />

represent policyholders.<br />

It is the <strong>Chartered</strong> <strong>Loss</strong><br />

Adjuster’s duty to <strong>in</strong>vestigate<br />

the cause <strong>of</strong> a loss, confirm<br />

that it is covered under the<br />

<strong>in</strong>surance policy and make<br />

prelim<strong>in</strong>ary enquiries <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

nature and probable extent <strong>of</strong><br />

the claim. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Loss</strong> Adjuster<br />

will advise the policyholder<br />

on measures which will help<br />

to mitigate the loss. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the early <strong>in</strong>vestigations the<br />

adjuster will consider whether<br />

someone else may have been<br />

responsible for the loss and,<br />

if so, will obta<strong>in</strong> statements<br />

and physical evidence to use<br />

later <strong>in</strong> negotiations when<br />

recovery <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>surer’s<br />

outlay from a third party may<br />

be sought. Legal knowledge,<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigative and people skills<br />

are <strong>of</strong> paramount importance.<br />
