Hampstead Theatre
The familiar story starts just prior
to the 1924 Paris Olympics in
which rival athletes, the Jewish
Harold Abrahams and the Scot Eric
Liddell, are due to compete in the
100 metres hurdles.
Along the way there is religious
conflict, romance and a grand
display of athletic prowess until
both star runners emerge
victorious, with gold medals for
Great Britain.
Many people will remember the
1981 film and know of the
intrigues and religious prejudices
that had to be overcome to reach
this triumphant ending. But you
will be pleasantly surprised, as I
was, to see how the Hampstead
Theatre has been specially
The Sondheim Society’s
This annual event is a must-see
for fans of the great songwriter,
not just to hear his songs, but to
watch them being performed by
young stars of the future. Pared
down from 70 entrants who are
selected from Britain's top stage
schools, these final twelve singers
each render their favourite
Theatre Reviews by Brad Ashton
transformed into a theatre-in-the
round to house this very enjoyable,
fast-paced show. There's even a
slow moving stage, which revolves
and ensures no actor has their back
to the audience for more than a
few seconds. Most ingenious
though, is the construction of a
running track that slices through
the stall seats area along similar
lines to Starlight Express.
The 20-strong cast not only act,
but most of them sing, dance and
play musical instruments as well
as give a display of athletics that
left the audience breathless. This
show is already scheduled to
transfer to the Gielgud Theatre
after June 16. I recommend
catching it at the Hampstead
Theatre where the seats are
cheaper.
Stephen Sondheim composition,
and perform a new original song
of their own choice. The fierce
competition to win the £1,000
and £500 top prizes brought
about not only a fantastic array of
top notch singing, but also some
beautifully timed comic acting.
Kris Olsen and Emma Salvo
deservedly claimed this year's
prizes. Remember those names,
you'll see them lighting up
marquees before very long.
