CHRISTUS St. Michael Rehabilitation Hospital, a leading provider of comprehensive medical
rehabilitation, and Texarkana College are proud to sponsor the 12th Annual Rehabilitation
Conference. The conference will provide an update on information and issues facing the
rehabilitation community in the 21st century, helping the health care professional provide
optimal care.
AUDIENCE:
Case Managers, Occupational Therapists, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants,
Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational
Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Social Workers, and Long-Term Care
Administrators.

REGISTRATION:
Pre-registration is requested. Persons may register either by mail or by going to the
Continuing Education Office on the Texarkana College campus. Registration fee is $90 for one
day or $150 for both days. CHRISTUS St. Michael Associates’ and students’ fee is $45 per day.
The fee includes refreshments, lunch, printed materials, and CNE/CEU/CCU certification. No
refunds after February 10, 2012. Substitutes may attend. For additional information call

UPON CONCLUSION ALL PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
• Identify risk factors for cardiac disease and reducing the potential recurrence of cardiac events.
• Discuss admitting criteria and reimbursement for outpatient cardiac rehabilitation.
• Identity how health care professionals can bring up hospice services without scaring the patient/family.
• Discuss how and when a health care professional can refer to hospice.
• With recent changes in the Healthcare law: Explain how healthcare professionals and hospice can
work together for better patient care.
• Discuss how apps can be used by the patient to enhance functional gains.
• Discuss apps that can be used by the healthcare professional to improve quality of patient care.
• Identify four communication pitfalls that undermine teamwork.
• Define and discuss the “we/they” culture and its affect on the interdisciplinary team.
• Provide the healthcare professional with resource information for vision loss.
• Identify modification strategies to enhance independence in the home environment.
• Discuss up to date home modifications for the geriatric population.
• List quick and easy solutions for fall prevention.
• Understand the indications and benefits of MAKOplasty®.
• Identify prevalence and causes of falls in the elderly.
• Understand components of dynamic equilibrium.
• Understand the symptoms of right hemisphere dysfunction and how it affects functional performance.
• Discuss modifications to treatment procedures to maximize functional rehabilitation return.
• Discuss the benefits of early mobility in the critically ill patient.
• Describe the expected rationale, application, use and outcomes of treatment consistent with
therapy goals within the framework of the PT/OT treatment plan using electrical stimulation.
• Determine how the physical properties and physiological effects of electrical stimulation can
promote particular treatment goals.
• Identify the physical properties of, and the physiological responses to electrical stimulation (TENS,
IFC, HVPC, MFAC, PENS)
• List the contraindications, warnings and precautions for the use of electrical stimulation.
• Understand exercises used to prevent shoulder impingement.
• Understand the progression from impingement to a rotator cuff tear.
APPROVALS/CERTIFICATES:
Participants who successfully complete all course requirements will receive a certificate by mail from
Texarkana College designating 7.0 CNE (Continuing Nursing Education hours) for Saturday and 7.0 CNEs
for Sunday, or 14.0 CNEs for both days.
Approval has been granted for: Social Workers, LVNs and RNs. Approval has been requested for: PTs/
OTs – AR, TX, LA, OK; Texas Speech & Language Pathologists, NAB – Long-Term Care Administrators.
Texarkana College is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association,
an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Verification of participation for attendees is by an arrival sign-in and verbal check-in at the registration
table with the Continuing Education staff at the start of the activity. Verification of successful completion
is by self-reported level of achievement of the objectives and attendance of the entire activity. To
verify attendance of the entire activity, a CNE Certificate Request form is submitted by each person
upon leaving the activity.
Approval status refers to the Continuing Education activity and does not imply ANCC Commission on
Accreditation or Texas Nurses Association approval or endorsement of any commercial product.
