Rehabilitation Conference 2012<br />

CHRISTUS St. Michael Rehabilitation Hospital, a leading provider of comprehensive medical<br />

rehabilitation, and <strong>Texarkana</strong> <strong>College</strong> are proud to sponsor the 12th Annual Rehabilitation<br />

Conference. The conference will provide an update on information and issues facing the<br />

rehabilitation community in the 21st century, helping the health care professional provide<br />

optimal care.<br />

Case Managers, Occupational Therapists, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants,<br />

Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational<br />

Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Social Workers, and Long-Term Care<br />

Administrators.<br />

REGISTRATION:<br />

Pre-registration is requested. Persons may register either by mail or by going to the<br />

Continuing Education Office on the <strong>Texarkana</strong> <strong>College</strong> campus. Registration fee is $90 for one<br />

day or $150 for both days. CHRISTUS St. Michael Associates’ and students’ fee is $45 per day.<br />

The fee includes refreshments, lunch, printed materials, and CNE/CEU/CCU certification. No<br />

refunds after February 10, 2012. Substitutes may attend. For additional information call<br />

• With recent changes in the Healthcare law: Explain how healthcare professionals and hospice can<br />

• Discuss apps that can be used by the healthcare professional to improve quality of patient care.<br />

• Identify four communication pitfalls that undermine teamwork.<br />

• Define and discuss the “we/they” culture and its affect on the interdisciplinary team.<br />

• Provide the healthcare professional with resource information for vision loss.<br />

• Identify modification strategies to enhance independence in the home environment.<br />

• Discuss up to date home modifications for the geriatric population.<br />

• List quick and easy solutions for fall prevention.<br />

• Understand the indications and benefits of MAKOplasty®.<br />

• Identify prevalence and causes of falls in the elderly.<br />

• Understand components of dynamic equilibrium.<br />

• Understand the symptoms of right hemisphere dysfunction and how it affects functional performance.<br />

• Discuss modifications to treatment procedures to maximize functional rehabilitation return.<br />

• Discuss the benefits of early mobility in the critically ill patient.<br />

• Describe the expected rationale, application, use and outcomes of treatment consistent with<br />

therapy goals within the framework of the PT/OT treatment plan using electrical stimulation.<br />

• Determine how the physical properties and physiological effects of electrical stimulation can<br />

promote particular treatment goals.<br />

• Identify the physical properties of, and the physiological responses to electrical stimulation (TENS,<br />

IFC, HVPC, MFAC, PENS)<br />

• List the contraindications, warnings and precautions for the use of electrical stimulation.<br />

• Understand exercises used to prevent shoulder impingement.<br />

• Understand the progression from impingement to a rotator cuff tear.<br />

APPROVALS/CERTIFICATES:<br />

Participants who successfully complete all course requirements will receive a certificate by mail from<br />

<strong>Texarkana</strong> <strong>College</strong> designating 7.0 CNE (Continuing Nursing Education hours) for Saturday and 7.0 CNEs<br />

for Sunday, or 14.0 CNEs for both days.<br />

Approval has been granted for: Social Workers, LVNs and RNs. Approval has been requested for: PTs/<br />

OTs – AR, TX, LA, OK; Texas Speech & Language Pathologists, NAB – Long-Term Care Administrators.<br />

<strong>Texarkana</strong> <strong>College</strong> is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association,<br />

an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.<br />

Verification of participation for attendees is by an arrival sign-in and verbal check-in at the registration<br />

table with the Continuing Education staff at the start of the activity. Verification of successful completion<br />

is by self-reported level of achievement of the objectives and attendance of the entire activity. To<br />

verify attendance of the entire activity, a CNE Certificate Request form is submitted by each person<br />

upon leaving the activity.<br />

Approval status refers to the Continuing Education activity and does not imply ANCC Commission on<br />

Accreditation or Texas Nurses Association approval or endorsement of any commercial product.
