<strong>Project</strong> Goal<br />

<strong>Project</strong> Goal: To create awareness on <strong>HTSP</strong> and<br />

to <strong>in</strong>tegrate <strong>HTSP</strong> messages <strong>in</strong>to health policies,<br />

guidel<strong>in</strong>es, protocols and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

curricula/activities.<br />

Time L<strong>in</strong>e: June 1, 2009 – August 31, 2010 (15<br />

months)


Key Objectives<br />

Advocate for the <strong>in</strong>tegration of <strong>HTSP</strong> messages <strong>in</strong>to<br />

health policies, guidel<strong>in</strong>es, protocols and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

curricula/activities<br />

Improve Maternal Health - ↓MMR, ↑ CPR, ↑ Skills of HW and MDs<br />

Increase awareness of the benefits of <strong>HTSP</strong> and the<br />

key <strong>HTSP</strong> messages<br />

MD curriculum – OBGY Departments at MUHAS, HKMU, IMTU and<br />

BUCHS to <strong>in</strong>corporate <strong>HTSP</strong> <strong>in</strong> FP sessions<br />

Coord<strong>in</strong>ate with public sector FP advocacy groups around<br />

reposition<strong>in</strong>g FP<br />

<strong>Tanzania</strong> launched the FP Costed Implementation Plan 2010-2013 to<br />

reposition FP <strong>in</strong> TZ<br />

on <strong>in</strong> the plan

Already translated <strong>in</strong> Swahili<br />

Negotiat<strong>in</strong>g with Pathf<strong>in</strong>der and media houses to be aired free<br />

Challenge is gett<strong>in</strong>g free air time - Experience from other countries<br />

Translated the consumer and provider materials<br />

and <strong>HTSP</strong> flier <strong>in</strong> Swahili, pr<strong>in</strong>ted several copies<br />

that has been distributed <strong>in</strong> our workshops and<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>gs


Achievements to date…<br />

Successful launch<strong>in</strong>g of MEWATA as local secretariat<br />

Medical university (MUHAS): <strong>HTSP</strong> <strong>in</strong> Ob/Gyn<br />

curriculum and <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ars for postgraduate<br />

students<br />

Client and health worker brochures <strong>in</strong> Swahili


Achievements to date…<br />

Formed a coalition of different organizations work<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

family plann<strong>in</strong>g issues.<br />

A three year Action Plan is be<strong>in</strong>g developed to advocate<br />

for <strong>HTSP</strong> Nationwide by the coalition.<br />

Curriculum from MOHSW <strong>in</strong>corporates <strong>HTSP</strong> <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>service<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g curriculum for nurses.<br />

Awareness and understand<strong>in</strong>g among HW, MDs, Media<br />

and Policy makers at MOHSW esp FP section <strong>in</strong>creased


Lessons Learned<br />

<strong>HTSP</strong> as a concept was not known by majority of health<br />

care workers as well as by the clients.<br />

Media is an important partner <strong>in</strong> advocacy.<br />

Buy-<strong>in</strong> of the government is key to successful advocacy<br />

strategy.<br />

Partnership is of utmost importance <strong>in</strong> awareness creation<br />

and advocacy.


Challenges<br />

Conflict<strong>in</strong>g activities of equal importance for the<br />

association<br />

Limited number of human resources –small secretariat<br />

Short term project– susta<strong>in</strong>ability issues, develop<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

coalition important step<br />

Scal<strong>in</strong>g up – massive <strong>HTSP</strong> campaign as we prepare for<br />

reposition<strong>in</strong>g FP <strong>in</strong> TZ


Next Steps<br />

To engage the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Health and Social Welfare to<br />

promote <strong>HTSP</strong> as a way of reposition<strong>in</strong>g family plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Scal<strong>in</strong>g up the activities for susta<strong>in</strong>ability purposes to<br />

some other regions by extend<strong>in</strong>g network of stakeholders<br />

to other regions.<br />

Involv<strong>in</strong>g the media <strong>in</strong> a much larger scale for wider<br />

dissem<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>HTSP</strong> to the communities.
