friends, Dear
was‎2012‎ a good year for Batsheva and its supporters. More than 90,000 people saw the
company in performances in Israel and abroad – probably more than in any other past
year. In Tel Aviv alone the audience numbered some 27,000 people, about 18% above
the annual target. The company performed extensively abroad – it conducted 10 tours
with 51 performances for a total audience of 39,000 people in 10 countries. In Israel,
the company dedicated resources to make dance accessible to young audiences and to
populations far from the center, especially with the Batsheva Ensemble. The Ensemble held
48 shows for approximately 15,000 school children in 22 communities.
Batshva Dance Company is supported consistently by the Ministry of Culture and Sport
and the City of Tel Aviv. Yet this funding would not be enough to maintain the extensive
activities of the company without the generous support of the Friends of Batsheva, in
Israel and abroad. Alongside the circle of veteran friends, a new circle of young friends
was established last year, numbering over 120 couples. Thanks to the support of its
friends, the company continued to innovate and to renew, to attract young talented
dancers from Israel and abroad, to acquire a supportive audience and to provide a
stage to the marvelous choreographies of Ohad Naharin and to the creations of other
talented artists.
In closing, I would like to mention the dedicated professional work of the
administrative and technical staff of the Company. Last year saw a great improvement
in work processes with concentrated attention given to safety, and to the dutiful
application of the recommendations of the Audit Committee of the Public Council. All
these assure the stability of the company in its work.
Sincerely,
Ittamar Givton
Chairman of the Board of Directors
Dear people,
We are in the middle of the season, while behind us, amongst other activities, are the
premier shows of The Hole, a successful tour to Paris, and an extensive tour to Russia.
We live the intensive present and 2012 seems far away, yet there is much satisfaction
in looking back. It was a year of good work in the studio, on stage and at the office. A
year of improvement and deepening, with many moments of value and beauty.
The good results of 2012 belong to many – to the dancers and the artistic staff, the
administrative staff and the technical team, the members of the Public Council and
Board of Directors, the loyal donors who believe in us and our work, and the large
audiences who support us in our home town and all over Israel and abroad.
To the future,
Sincerely,
Dina Aldor
Executive Director
Ohad Naharin
"Ohad Naharin draws the best
dancers in the world… I have
never seen such a combination of
beauty, energy and skill."
"Fluid, dynamic, expansive
yet delicate, animalistic yet
profoundly human…"
The Sctosman, 12 October 2012
"What an incredible ensemble of talented
and inspiring performing artists. Dancers
who move from the soul, from a place of
integrity… a place so deep… thank you
very much."
From a letter received by the company after a
performance in Manchester, November 2012
"With Batsheva, you don't
just see choreography,
you feel it."
The Evening Standard, 21
November 2012
It is the interpretation delivered by the dancers which creates the
experience for the wide audience, from school children, through the large
crowds in Tel Aviv, to the diverse audiences in Israel and abroad.
Batsheva is an international dance company that draws dancers from Israel
and around the world. 34 dancers worked with the artistic staff at the
studios in 2012 to execute the company's intensive schedule.
In 2012 Batsheva continued to invest resources towards the improvement
of the dancers' salaries, their physical and social wellbeing, the upgrade
of their work environment and conditions and their development as
teachers in care of their future.
A special emphasis has continued to be given to nurturing their talents
as independent choreographers, within the annual project "Batsehva
Dancers' Create", that provides the dancers of both companies with
production means to create their own choreographies.
