Celebrate the harvest season this fall at Sgt. Means Park 

for our largest event of the year, the Annual Pumpkin 

Festival! Enjoy hayrides, face painting, a corn maze, a 

pumpkin patch, and much more! This event is loaded 

with great activities and tons of family fun. You won’t 

want to miss it!

Calling all residents! Let’s show our park district community 

pride by getting together for our very first Autumn 

Clean Up Day in the Parks. You can pick your Park to clean

to use at the following locations: Bicentennial, Sgt. Means 

and Arcadia Parks. So, pick the park closest to you or your 

favorite park and join us for a couple hours of clean up and 

resident camaraderie.

Those Were the Days Radio Players 

September 9 – 1:30PM 

“Those Were the Days” Radio Players are a popular Chicago 

area group which re-enacts radio programs from the 

golden days of radio. In these programs they act out 1940s 

radio to give us a feel for the time before television. It was 

a world where the listener’s imagination created the video, 

and sometimes it was a picture that even today’s video 

wizards would have a hard time matching.

South Suburban Special Recreation Association (SSSRA) 

is a therapeutic recreation program that is an extension 

of the Olympia Fields Park District. SSSRA is organized 

to provide individuals with special needs or disabilities 

the opportunity to be involved in year round recreation 

programs. 

SSSRA programs are for individuals from birth through 

adult who are in special education classes, sheltered 

workshops or whom have recreational needs not met by 

traditional park district programs. 

Persons residing in SSSRA member agency communities 

are considered residents. These agencies are: Country 

Club Hills Park District, Frankfort Square Park District, 

Hazel Crest Park District, Homewood-Flossmoor Park 

District, Lan-Oak Park District, Matteson Parks & Recreation 

Department, Oak Forest Park District, Olympia 

Fields Park District, Park Forest Recreation & Parks Department, 

Richton Park Parks & Recreation Department, 

and Tinley Park-Park District. 

Programs and special events are offered seasonally 

throughout the year. They include programs in the areas 

of Early Childhood Development, Cultural Arts, Illinois 

Special Olympics, Summer Day Camp, Sports & Fitness, 

Social Programs, Adaptive Sports, Special Events and 

Overnight Trips.

Professional staff with experience in the field of Therapeutic 

Recreation or a related field supervise all SSSRA 

programs. They are assisted by individuals who are trained

Scholarships are available to SSSRA residents with disabilities 

who would like to participate in one or more 

programs, but cannot afford the fees charged. 

Through the Inclusion process, SSSRA staff members are 

available to help participants choose an appropriate program,

Sign Language 

This class provides a beginner’s education in American Sign 

Language. Fundamentals, such as the alphabet, vocabulary, 

sentences, and phrases will be introduced. The class will advance 

as your skills increase, shifting the focus to receptive 

and expressive language. All individuals must complete the 

SSSRA registration form, and return it to the SSSRA office. 

Children under the age of 10 are encouraged to sign

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) 

EAB is an invasive pest from Asia and threatens the 

ash tree population in the United States. In Michigan 

alone it has killed over 20 million trees since its discovery 

in 2002. 

In our park system we have 349 Ash trees of which 143 

show moderate to severe signs of decline and approximately 

40 trees need to be removed. The EAB moves 

naturally from tree to tree and is also transported by 

humans removing fire wood and landscape materials. 

What to do? 

The Park District Staff along with arborists from 4 

Season’s Landscaping and Pat’s Landscaping are constantly 

monitoring our infestation, treating our high 

profile trees both preventatively, and also curatively 

any tree that is showing a canopy decline of 40% or 

less. Park staff has been trained in basal bark injection 

of a pesticide called Pointer followed by the fertilizer 

Nutiboost. 

There are also soil injection treatments of Xytect and 

root injection treatments of Tree-age, both are very 

effective. 

The Park district is working closely with our neighbors 

and 4 Seasons Arbor Service has agreed to extend a 

volume discount to our neighbors if they get serviced

You Must Register 3 Days Prior to the 

Start of Any Class or Event! 

Ever wonder why classes get cancelled? If you wait to register 

for a class the day of, you run the risk of the class being cancelled 

because of low enrollment. To better ensure that your 

favorite class will not be cancelled, you must register at least 

3 days prior to the class start date.

The Park District reserves the right to dismiss a participant 

from a program if their behavior or language is deemed inappropriate 

by staff, or if it prevents fellow participants from 

having the best experience possible. 

Photography Policy 

Olympia Fields Park District uses photographs in programs 

and special events to inform others of the many recreational 

opportunities available in our community. We do not use 

identification in our brochure. If you do not wish to have 

your picture taken, please inform the photographer. The Park 

District does not control newspaper photographers or others 

who may photograph program participants. 

Looking to Volunteer? 

Several of our Park District programs have been successful 

due to the individuals who volunteer their time to assist us 

in the programs we offer. The Park District is looking for 

individuals to assist with programs and special events. If you 

would like to get involved, please stop by the Park District office 

and fill out a volunteer application. Please note for which 

programs/events you would like to volunteer.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION 

Olympia Fields Park District is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. Olympia Fields Park District continually strives to reduce such 

risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participants’ safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for the below listed programs/ 

activities must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreational activities/programs. 

You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward is physically fit and/or skilled for the activities contemplated by this agreement. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled 

in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity. 

WARNING OF RISK 

Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there 

is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity. Understandably, not all hazards and dangers can be foreseen. Depending on the particular activity, participants must understand that certain risks, dangers 

and injuries due to inclement weather, slip and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, premises defects, inadequate or defective equipment, inadequate supervision, instruction 

or officiating, and all other circumstances inherent to indoor and outdoor recreational activities exist. In this regard, it must be recognized that it is impossible for Olympia Fields Park District to guarantee absolute safety. 

WAIVER AND RELEASE OF ALL CLAIMS AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK 

Please read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and participating in the programs listed below, you will be expressly assuming the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all claims for injuries, damages 

or loss which you or your minor child/ward might sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with and associated with these programs (including transportation services and vehicle operations, when 

provided). 

I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risks of physical injury to participants in these programs, and I voluntarily agree to assume the full risk of any and all injuries, damages or loss, regardless of severity, that 

my minor child/ward or I may sustain as a result of said participation. I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (or accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in these 

programs against Olympia Fields Park District, including its officials, agents, volunteers and employees.

Registration Policies 

1. Proof of residency (utility or tax bill) will be checked 

by the Park District staff upon registration. 

2. Park District residents receive a discounted rate, as 

they pay taxes to the district. 

3. Any applicant or participant may be required at any 

time to provide reasonable proof of age, residency, 

marital status or dependency. 

4. You must complete the registration form (page 34 ) 

and submit with full payment when registering for 

a program. 

5. Registration is accepted at the Park District office 

(The Barn) located at:

7. Drop-Off Registration - You may use the white drop 

box located to the right of the mail box outside the 

Cull House. This box is accessible 24 hours a day. 

8. Pre-registration is necessary for most Park District 

programs. 

9. All registration is done on a first come, first served 

basis. No space will be reserved until the appropriate 

program fee is paid. 

10. Payment is accepted in the form of: cash, check, 

money order or credit card (Visa or MasterCard).

11. A $35 fee will be charged for any returned check. 

Only cash will be taken in place of the NSF check.

12. Program Fees will not be prorated when registering 

for a program if the class session has already started 

or you cannot attend the class dates as listed. 

13. Waiting lists will be formed when a class is full. Every 

attempt will be made to open an additional class. 

14. Programs may be cancelled prior to the start date due 

to low enrollment. Refunds will be issued in the form 

of a check or return of charges to credit card used in 

the transaction within 30 days of request. All 

programs or rental refunds to be received in the form 

of a check will be written to the person whose name 

appears on the original registration/rental. Checks 

will be available by pick-up only, no checks will be 

sent through the mail. A refund in the form of a 

check will be available for pick up within 30 days. 

15. It is mutually understood that a FAXED registration 

document (including waiver and release of all claims) 

shall substitute for and have the same legal effect as 

the original form. Our fax number is 708-481-8735. 

Payment is required to reserve a spot. This fax does 

not reserve you a spot until payment has been 

received. 

Refund Policies 

1. In the event a program, trip, or event is cancelled by 

the Park District, each registrant will be notified and a 

full refund will be issued and available for pick up 

within 30 days. 

2. A $5 administration fee will be assessed on all refund 

requests by the participant. Refund requests for all 

programs (excluding trips) must be requested prior 

to the second class meeting. Refunds will not be 

approved past the start of the second class meeting. 

Refunds will be ready for pick up within 30 days of 

request. 

3. No refunds will be given for trips past the registration 

deadline date - unless there is a waiting list and 

someone can take the place from that waiting list.
