An appositive is a phrase which<br />

provides additional details about a noun or pronoun in a sentence. It is separated<br />

from the rest of the sentence by commas. Most commonly found when they<br />

interrupt in the middle of the sentence, appositive phrases can also begin or end a sentence.<br />

<strong>Using</strong> an appositive phrase is good way to include details without having too many short, choppy<br />

sentences. Consider the two examples below. The second example combines sentences using an<br />

appositive phrase to provide a smoother reading experience for the reader.<br />

The monument is large. It is made of stone. It is in South Dakota. It has four presidents’ faces on it.<br />

It is called Mt.Rushmore.<br />

Mt. Rushmore, a large stone monument in South Dakota, has the faces of four presidents on it.<br />

Combine the sentences below into one sentence that uses as least one appositive.<br />

1. The car was made in 1993. It is a Toyota. It is red. It belongs to Joe.<br />

2. The book was short. It had only 65 pages. Peter was able to finish it quickly.<br />

3. The girl is little. She is cute. She is also very smart. Her name is Mary.<br />

4. The painting is colorful. It was made by Jackson Pollock. It was done in 1948.<br />

5. We watched a movie. The title was “Peter Pan.” It is my favorite movie.<br />

6. The man is tall. He is my uncle. His name is Bob. He is winning the game.<br />

7. She is Mark’s sister. Her name is Jenny. She got a new kitten.<br />

8. The poem is long. It is a ballad. It is called “Robin Hood and the Potter.”<br />
