School Psychology Awareness Week:<br />
Know your own strengths<br />
• The National Association <strong>of</strong> School Psychologists has designated November<br />
12-16, 2012 as School Psychology Awareness Week<br />
• “What we do not hear about are <strong>the</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong> cases in which well-trained<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional psychologists, working with caring teachers and loving parents, quietly<br />
identify <strong>the</strong> sources <strong>of</strong> children’s frustrations and place <strong>the</strong>m in an environment in<br />
which growth and success, not frustration become <strong>the</strong> norm.”<br />

Program Overview<br />
<strong>JCCS</strong> students are referred from <strong>the</strong> Probation<br />
Department, <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Social Services and/or<br />
<strong>the</strong> student's resident school district. School districts<br />
refer students for zero <strong>to</strong>lerance, expulsion, credit<br />
deficiency, and truancy.<br />
• K-12 schools, with over 90% <strong>of</strong> our students enrolled in grades<br />
8 through 12<br />
• 10,541 enrollments during 2011-12<br />
• Daily enrollments range from 2800 <strong>to</strong> 3200<br />
• 44 day average length <strong>of</strong> stay<br />
• 20% <strong>of</strong> students receiving special education services<br />

32% <strong>of</strong> <strong>JCCS</strong> students are English Learners<br />

Focus on Achievement<br />
• Many <strong>of</strong> our students demonstrate Basic or Below Basic<br />
level academic skills upon enrollment<br />
• For our students <strong>to</strong> pass <strong>the</strong> CAHSEE, graduate from<br />
high school or complete <strong>the</strong> GED requires <strong>the</strong><br />
acceleration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir achievement levels during <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten<br />
brief enrollment in our programs<br />
• We have found an integrated, strategic approach <strong>to</strong> be<br />
effective<br />
• Revised and updated academic language curriculum<br />
• Expansion <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning communities in<br />
<strong>JCCS</strong><br />
• Improvement and refinement <strong>of</strong> technology and<br />
academic data systems<br />
