Character Counts!
DAVAO CITY—32 campers and 32 staff members
from ten different church congregations
nationwide attended the United Youth Camp 2004.
The camp started from May 16 until 23 at Eden’s
Nature Park, Toril, Davao City. With its theme,
“Character Counts,” the camp was designed for
each camper to exemplify godly character such
as loyalty, trustworthiness, thriftiness, cleanliness,
helpfulness, reverence, obedience, kindness,
friendliness, courtesy, cheerfulness, and bravery.
For the first time on its sixth year, the campers
experienced challenges and fun-filled learning
activities focused on character building. The day’s
activities started with the first ever Interactive
Christian Living class where each dorm presented
a skit with specific topic assigned to them based
on the real situation of the world today like ‘Peer
Pressure of Vices and Lifestyle’, ‘Sabbath and Holy
Day Compromise,’ and ‘Irresponsibility.’
Workshops such as Journalism, Cooking and
Baking, Paper and Flower card Making, Public
Speaking, Arts and Crafts, Carpentry, and Electricity
completed the morning session.
The theme for United Youth Camps
this year is: “Character Counts.” This
subject is vital not only for our campers
but for all of us. Without this righteous,
godly, spiritual character developed in
us, we cannot be part of God’s family.
That’s how vitally important it is!
Massive ignorance and deception
While God gives us free-will, godly
character is something which even
God cannot give us by fiat! Does that
shock you This is something which
most religionists do not understand.
Because of deception, most were led
to believe that salvation is just like
accepting the offer of a piece of candy.
They erroneously believe that there is
nothing more for us to do—except to
simply believe. If this were so, Satan
and all the demons would surely be
saved because they not only believe
but even tremble. But that is not what
James 2:19 shows. Instead, godly
character development involves diligent
work and obedience, accompanied with
great reverence [fear and trembling]
concerning our calling (Phil. 2:12).
What is character
Character Counts…
by Edmond D. Macaraeg, Camp Director
The best definition of “character”
which I came across is the one
developed by the late Herbert W.
Armstrong, a great religious leader
and teacher. In essence he said that,
“Character is the ability of an entity to
distinguish right from wrong and the
power to choose and do right in spite of
the pressure to do wrong.” A simple yet
practical definition.
Why does character count
To properly answer this question
in the proper context, we need to
understand first what is the ultimate plan
and purpose of God What is God like,
and what has He been doing Why
did He create the universe and angelic
beings prior to mortal man And what
is the role of “character” in all these
(Our free booklet, What Is Your Destiny
and our Bible Study Course can shed
some light to these questions. Please
download from the Internet or request
for your free copy.)
For those who have some
advanced knowledge on these matters,
we know that God is building His own
spiritual family kingdom composed of
beings who have developed a character
similar and attuned to God’s. Unknown
to most, we are destined to be His sons
and daughters (2 Cor. 6:18), and to be
It’s More Than
Getting High
Grades!
by Reuel D. Campos
“You cannot serve two masters at
the same time!’—A very well known
saying that perhaps many young
people of today fairly disagree.
I’m somewhat irritated upon
hearing these words told
to me by my teachers
back in high school. I
tend to create crazy
ideas like: “Oh, my
teachers are
wrong! Look,
I can do my
assignments
while watching
TV or listening
to music; I can
manage having
a girlfriend while
studying; I can do this
while doing that; blah,
blah, blah…” I do both
leisure and studies together
because for me, it’s no big deal.
My high school life revolved with
that kind of idea and as a result, I got
a very poor performance in school.
My grades and results of exams and
quizzes were low. I was even the last
among the top ten deserving students
in our class (I don’t even deserve to
be the last!). That’s when I started to
realize that my teachers were right.
So I made a promise to myself: “When
I reach college, I will set my priorities
towards my studies first and then
pursue on other things later!”
I did try to work hard to fulfill
that promise and well, everything
in college seemed to turn out the
way I wanted it to. I got satisfactory
performance during my first and
second years. My grades were really
high and I was even included in the
Dean’s list of well-performing students.
But everything changed when I started
to listen to God’s calling.
I was on my third year when I
saw the lady whom I first met about
nine years ago. She was
ten years older than
I am and still single.
She did not even
recognize me when
I approached her.
We had a long talk
and in one of our
conversations,
we happened
to touch on the
subject about
God’s Church.
She told
me she’s so
blessed to
be one of the
firstfruits and
to have part in the great plan
of God. I can’t explain my feelings
that time but I seemed to learn to
appreciate the works of the church in
preaching the gospel and preparing
a people for the coming kingdom. I
wanted to learn more but our time
was not enough so she invited me to
attend the Sabbath service. I accepted
her invitation and I spent several
Sabbaths with them. I’ve asked a lot
of questions about the Church and
some things that bothered me for
many years and I discovered a lot
of truth from the answers they gave
me. I also learned how important it is
to listen to God’s words and to obey
His commandments and laws. After
many Sabbaths of fellowshipping
Camper Goals & Comments
“I first plan to apply this in my
home. I will be more industrious and
more dependable so that God and my
parents will be pleased. Secondly, I can
use these teachings to perceive the evil
ways of the world. I will use it as a shield
from Satan’s fiery darts. In summary, of
all of this, I will apply this in all aspects
of my life to grow in faith, serve God and
people, and to grow with the right favor
in men.”
—Aunell Ross Angcos, 14
sa UYC
Camp dahil
marami akong
natutunan
sa taon na
ito at marami
rin akong
nakaibigan at
naging masaya.
Natuto ako ng
mga gawaing
bahay tulad
ng pagluluto,
paglalaba.
T’saka nadagdagan din ang kaalaman
ko sa mga salita ng ating Panginoon at
sa mga problema ng kabataan. Naging
masaya ako dahil nakasama ako
ngayon at sana sa marami pang taon.”
—Klint Simon Cuevas, 15
“With this in mind, my plan of action
is to apply the teachings, messages that I
received in this
camp… unanguna
ay i-share
ko yong mga
nalalaman
kong mga
A Staffer’s Report
by David Macaraeg
“Rejoice in your youth, and have a
good time. Do things you enjoy, have
fun… but know that God will judge you
for the way you live life…” (Ecclesiastes
11:9, paraphrased).
“Best Summer Camp” again, to
many observers, according to Camp
Director, Edmond Macaraeg. This core
group was made of 65 campers and
staff delegates from Luzon, Visayas
and Mindanao, held on May 16-23,
2004, at Eden Nature Park, Davao
City, Philippines. There were eight
sports activities, eight workshops and
eight classes.
Some of them
were: Christian
Living classes,
Wilderness
Survival,
Confidence
Course, Hymn
Singing, First
Aid, Masculinity
and Femininity
Seminar, Career
and Personality
Discovery, and
Dance, more
than the usual.
Fifty percent
of this year’s camp population has not
attended our summer camps before. A
total of four dorms made up the camp.
Each dorm was composed of eight
campers, plus an assistant counselor
and a counselor. There were two boy
dorms—called 1B and 2B, and two girl
dorms—1G and 2G. (Dorm 1G had one
added mini-camper who participated
in all activities.) Because the camp
lacked qualified
manpower this
year, three dorm
counselors had
to serve as sports
instructors as well.
Each dorm was
assigned two tents (with four campers
plus a counselor or his/her assistant in
one). Each dorm was assigned a twoburner
stove and cooking gas, cooking
and dining wares, one toilet, one bath,
and two sinks. The camp had one
spare toilet and bathroom.
Each day began with a Christian
Living Class at 8 a.m., with two
scenarios of role-playing, depicting
first the negative side followed by the
positive side, based on a specified
topic. The
instructor was our
Camp Director
and Mindanao
Pastor, Edmond
Macaraeg.
The junior staff
and counselors
did the roleplaying
during
the first day
about “Romantic
Relationships
with Unbeliever.”
The other
four days
were on “Peer Pressure on Drugs,
Smoking, etc.”, “Peer Pressure on
Lifestyle, Fashion, etc.”, “Sabbath and
Holy Day Compromise,” and lastly,
“Irresponsibility.”
Camp on Friday night covered
a video show by world-renowned
speaker Pam Stenzel on the subject,
“Sex has a price tag.” It’s sobering…
Action prior to the break of
camp was indeed interactive as four
volunteers from each dorm, staff and
counselors engaged in “Bible bowl” (or
Bible quiz). The counselors won after
the two-hour activity.
On the Sabbaths before camp,
two young adults were given the job
of coordinating all aspects of services
including hymns, opening and closing
prayers, flowers, hall set-up, sound
system control, announcements, special
music and the afternoon refreshments.
Charles Macaraeg of the Davao City
congregation led the hymns. Luzon
pastor Serizalinio Dizon delivered the
first split-sermon on “Stick to God” while
the second split-sermon was delivered
by Visayas Pastor Florante Siopan on
“Discipline.”
“My plan is
I will follow the
teachings, messages
and instructions
given by the camp
director in my daily
life because it also
prepares me for the future. “Character
counts” is the best thing that I came
across in the camp to enhance my
character. UYC is the greatest thing I
have done in my whole life.
It created bonding with each
other. I enjoyed very much this camp.
It’s a great privilege to come to UYC. I
do my best to practice the twelve (12)
characteristics of a camper. I think
it made me stronger in my faith of
God. Napakasaya talaga namin as
a camper dahil sa mga counselor na
nagbabantay sa amin araw-araw, sana
ay magpatuloy naman ang mga ugali
ng isang maka-Dios.
Thank you Camp Director, staff,
fellow campers for the best thing that
you have given to us. To my Pastor in
Leyte, thank you for the opportunity
that you have given to me.”
eceived in camp into my life, and more
so in doing so that it will not be forgotten
because hearing without doing is
nothing. These will strengthen me in my
trials in life.
The teachings, messages and
instructions (received) I took note and will
always be my reference and will always
read it.
I learned to build my character and
to makisama kahit kaunti lamang.
At nakakakilala ako ng mga
maraming kaibigan.
At babalik ako kapag may
opportunity para maragdagan pa
ang aking nalalaman.”
—Nyl S. Jain, 17
“United Youth Camp
(UYC) has really never failed
to contribute a “CHANGE” in the
life and character of every youth
that attended such. Thus, it is a
great privilege and opportunity
to become one of the 32 campers
who attended the camp held at
Eden Nature Park, Davao City,
Philippines. In fact, it really has
taught me not only to become
a good citizen of my country,
but also to prepare me to become a
righteous child of God. In that sense,
camp brought me more closely to God.
The challenges and tests that have been
encountered in camp will surely mold the
character of every camper to become a
better individual to their community and
to their country.
With all the things I learned, it is thus
important to apply all the knowledge,
challenges and experiences I learned in
camp. Setting an example would surely
have an impact in the betterment of life
of every human kind. We must not only
be “SAYERS OF THE WORD,” but also be
DOERS OF THE WORD. As the theme of
this year’s camp states that “CHARACTER
WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE COUNSELOR
by Richard John Macaraeg
Have you ever wondered what it would
be like to serve in camp A staff member
would be nice… Wouldn’t it be fun to just
hang around and happily be part of the team
that serves the campers
I have been a camper twice and a staff
member eight times now. And in those
years of serving as staff, I couldn’t find
any greater responsibility and joy than to
serve as counselor. It’s funny how my
thesaurus defines what a counselor
is—therapist, psychoanalyst, shrink…
Not really funny if you think what this
world
so desperately needs.
Weeks before camp,
counselors and cocounselors
were
trained on how to
properly handle our
campers that would also
give a lasting and positive impact
on their lives. We were each given a
counselor’s manual that we must read
and study to understand what our job
demands.
My job as the counselor for Dorm 1B
entails not just doing the necessary
tasks at camp, but it also involves
a deeper level of commitment
when dealing with the lives of
each camper in my dorm.
For me, the responsibility of a
counselor is the most crucial and important
part when it comes to nurturing campers in
the right way. You are in direct control and
command of what your campers must do
and how they should conduct themselves.
You are in the position to either uplift them
positively with a higher degree of wisdom
and guidance based on God’s Word, or set
a wrong example in becoming too familiar
with the ways of this world. Counselors play
a critical role in the example that they set.
What you think, say and do would be easily
noticed most of the time by your campers.
How you react to certain situations would
spell the difference between campers
wanting to follow your lead and campers
losing their trust in you or in anyone in
authority. Whatever a counselor says and
does can either make them or break them,
as the saying goes.
On a social level, I would think that
counselors play a greater responsibility than
teachers. Counselors must teach, yes, but
also must encourage, motivate, and look into
the emotional well being of his/her campers,
since this aspect greatly affects a person’s
response to the others.
I’m still far from being perfect, but being
close to God helps me overcome the
challenges of being a counselor. Looking
into what the
Bible describes
as our ultimate
reward from
God gives me
great joy and
motivation to
carry on.
To the future
leaders of
God’s Church,
let’s make it a
point to always accompany our prayer with
studying God’s Word daily—remembering
that God knows all things, sees all things,
hears all things, and whatever we do to our
brethren, we do it unto Him. _
This could help in the stability of
that these teachings that I’ve learned
will be utilized in my own self in the
future. All the things that I had learned
about the teachings, messages, and
materialistic and vain things. Instead,
I’ll try my best to do all the good things
that I know and I know it will be so hard
to do this these things but as I said UYC
made me stronger.
I want to thank all
the 60 people at UYC
for this. I think the best
way to thank those 60
people is to show my
brothers and sisters
examples that may
make us even stronger
and stronger.”
The Power of Encouragement
by Aunell Ross Angcos
“On May 20, 2004, Thursday,
at about 7:30 p.m., Mr. Edmond D.
Macaraeg, our camp director, introduced us
to the night’s activity, the Fellowship Time.
He instructed each
one of us to prepare
our own booklet,
which was given
to us earlier. Each
booklet contained
60 leaves and
was made up of
coupon bond cut
in one-fourth size,
stapled and bound.
He told us to pass
the booklet to our
right seatmate and
receive the other booklet from the left and
write positive and honest comments about
the owner of the booklet, then pass it again
to the right until one eventually received
his/her own booklet. The time limit to
write on each booklet was one minute and
30 seconds.
With all the
tiredness from the
day’s workshops
and activities, plus
the distress added
by the cool breeze
slowly blowing on
our skin, writing
for each one was
not an easy task.
But thanks to the
kitchen staff who helped us keep awake by
serving hot drinks and biscuits. And of
course, to the Almighty God who really
inspired us to keep going.
It took us about 4-5 hours to finish
all the booklets. But one can clearly see
tired eyes suddenly sparkle with joy when
they began reading their own booklets.
The sleepiness were gone! Many
campers began hugging each other with
their heartfelt thanks and others by simply
shaking hands. Since it was already past
midnight, we were instructed by our camp
director to take our rest and prepare
ourselves for the next day’s activities,
which were Wilderness Skills and
Confidence Course. Many of us slept
very inspired and in “cloud nine” feeling.
It was really great that the
organizers of this camp came up with
this idea. I think we had just fulfilled
part of a commandment in Hebrews
10:24-25 which states, “And let us
consider one another in order to stir
up love and good works, not forsaking the
assembling of ourselves together, as is the
manner of some, but exhorting one another,
and so much the more as you see the
Day approaching.” The other part of the
command applies to the one who received
the encouragement. We should show the
evidence of LOVE and GOOD WORKS
toward our brethren.
And now, as we go on to the
world full of misery, troubles, and
discouragements to live each of our
own mortal lives,
let us not forget
the ULTIMATE
PURPOSE of our
lives, why we are
here. God is refining
us for His coming
Kingdom. And always
remember that there
is no refining that is
not fiery. It is normal
for us Christians
to experience fiery
trials. When we
get discouraged
and distressed, let us all encourage one
another and go hand in hand at this period
of refining so that at the end we may all
emerge as PURE GOLD.” _
the tunnel and nagkaroon ng kaunting
I have really really enjoyed this
camp. I hope I will come back next time.
—Juanson Barrientos, 14
“In my mind, my plan
of action is to apply the
teachings and to maintain the
character that has been taught to
us. The messages that I have heard
from our Christian Living classes
and Bible study, I would apply to my
daily life. The instructions that I received
at camp, I would also apply into my
life like listening carefully on what the
counselor or the instructors have to say
so that we will be able to do the project
or game close to perfect. These are all
the things that I plan to do from what I
have learned at camp and how to be a
camper with good character.”
—Dexter Julag-ay, 14
“I will apply the teachings from
the UYC camp. I will be more cheerful
and will be more helpful and kind. I will
apply the
teachings
like keeping
the Sabbath
and combat
peer
pressure.
I will be
a better
influence
to my
classmates,
family
members
and I will
apply the 12 character traits and other
teachings in camp. I will never forget my
friends cause they have influenced me a
lot to become a better person. I will also
not forget the activities and I would try
to attend the Feast and next camp.”
—Ariel Cabalquinto, 14
“After this camp, I will try to be a
good man. I will also apply all
the things that I had learned
in different situations that is
needed to improve on
my personality. I can
also apply the things
that I have learned
here in camp to various situations in our
school.
Our school is actually always
focused on reporting so now, I will not be
afraid to face the crowd because I have
enough confidence gained from camp.
I will also apply all the character traits
such as being trustworthy, loyal, helpful,
friendly, courteous, kind, obedient,
cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and
reverent in our locality in order to please
people and above all, to please God. All
those things that I have mentioned are
my plans when I go back home and
meet my friends who are waiting for me.”
—Ben John D. Campos, 14
“When I arrive home, I will promise
to myself that as much as possible, I
will always apply the marvelous things
I have learned from this camp. This
camp has taught me a lot of lessons
and corrected me many times
from my mistakes. I will never
forget the theme: “Character
counts” and its goal to further
develop the essential character
traits which are: Trustworthy,
Loyalty, Helpfulness, Friendliness,
Courteousness, Kindness,
Obedience, Cheerfulness, Thriftiness,
Bravery, Cleanliness and most of all
Reverence to God.”
From Banana Leaves to
a Lifetime and Beyond!
by Cheryl Lynn G. Macaraeg
What does banana leaves got to
do with savoring a week you might ask.
Well, it’s not like what you may think
that we put banana leaves,
finely chopped, and put it in
all the dishes that we cook.
Thankfully, no, that’s not
it. You
may not
think that
a n d it would
readily well be just the
product of my own silly
imagination. But, even
though my imagination
may get that silly, the
banana leaves did
made a lot of savoring
for us…
Our first night
of camp was a chilly
one with rain slightly
pouring. We have to
eat outdoors and yes,
we can get wet, that’s why it has been
all fun from the start. Just imagine our
large banana leaves all lined up in our
bamboo table, decorated with freshly
sliced arrayed bright yellow mangoes,
hot cooked rice fresh from the pot, and
not to forget the star of our banana
leaves showcase, our many pieces
of humble fried milk fish. It tasted
SOOO good especially eating with
our bare hands! Needless to
say, it was truly a Filipino and
an outdoor camp experience.
Did the banana leaves
made our first meal in camp so
tasty Or was it just because we
were eating with our bare hands :)
Hehe… I’m just joking. We did wash our
hands with exceptionally clean finger nails
if you want me to elaborate.
Getting to the more serious stuff,
it’s not directly the experience of the
banana leaves that made our week worth
savoring but it truly did indirectly bond
us all together. Taking into consideration
the fact that we all have to put effort
into making our first meal great, readily
sparked the family spirit of cooperation
and unity the first night we as a dorm
got together. From cooperation and
unity, there was love and obedience
at play… not because we counselors
demanded
it, but it was
rather readily,
heartily and
voluntarily
demonstrated
by the humble
and teachable
campers we
had this year.
It was their
attitude, their
childlikeness,
their
meekness,
their love
and their
obedience that I know God was well
pleased with to grant them and to us, the
volunteer staffers, the best camp ever!
Allowing ourselves to get wet, get
tired, get dirty, get ourselves into position
to serve others (and in all those getting,
getting
unwanted
bloopers
as well but
still smiling
and happy),
it’s all the
result of the
feeling of
“The measure of a man’s real
character is what he would do if
he knew he would never be found
out.”
—Baron Thomas Babington Macauley
how wonderful it is to be with such great
people! And with the presence of such
great people, we can boldly say that
there is a great God who brought us all
“For me as a camper, I plan to
apply all those messages, teachings, and
instructions into my life. And
by applying all of those
principles, I can have
a more prosperous
and meaningful life
for the present
and for the future.
As a called out one
of God, I will strive and
maintain to focus my
mind on the goal which is the Kingdom
of God. I know that after this camp,
Satan the devil, the god of this world
will try to lure me into his way through
peer pressure, lifestyles, relationships
and other deceitful things. But I will
always focus my mind unto God and His
commandments so that I can overcome
and endure unto the end.”
—Iyarmoon Dulay, 16
“First of all, by the time I get home, I
am going to hug my mother and father
and tell them how much I love them.
Character sure counts and I am going to
put meaning into it. Before I joined the
camp, I am irresponsible and sometimes
ignored God’s commandments. But this
camp had a huge influence in my life.
I’ve learned many things that you just
can’t pick from the corners of society.
All those knowledge
I have learned will
not be wasted but
instead, I would
change my bad ways
to God’s ways. I will
do all the efforts and
ask for God’s help
to fulfill my duties. I
am going to make the most of what I
can do and do the things a person with
good character would do like being
trustworthy, friendly, thrifty, kind, clean,
everent, brave, loyal, courteous, helpful,
obedient and cheerful, whatever it takes
just to obey God’s will and to have a
better life.”
—Joshua Infantado, 18
“I have learned many things in this
camp, one of them is to build my own
character. That character is the most
important of all and in this case I would
apply it to my friends and my family
to teach them to have Godly character
too. And most of all I have learned a lot
of things especially spiritually to praise
and worship God in every way. I really
learned a lot in the summer youth
camp of 2004. My character
changed when I attended
this camp because every
word that Mr. Edmond
Macaraeg said inspired
me to change and be a
responsible camper or
person.”
—Ylwin Vincent
Wong, 16
“This year’s camp is full
of excitement, adventure, experiences
and is truly enjoyable. I learn a lot of
things in our daily activities. My plan
of action [is] to apply all I have learned
in this year’s camp. To change my bad
attitude is my first goal and to become
kind and friendly to others, to be brave
to face problems because I know if we
think positively we can do things better
than before. I’m a kind of person with no
self-confidence and
I don’t really trust
on my ability and
I am putting my
self down always.
Since I have learned
a lot from all the
activities, I will try
to be a good girl and be that kind of
the intellect which makes a great
character.”
Testimonials From a
first-time junior staffer
by Meryl Lynn G. Macaraeg
“I don’t wanna be a junior staff.”
That’s how I felt way, way, back before
the camp. One reason is…. (sshhh, don’t
tell anyone, okay)… my goal in still
being a camper is that I want to be
the one who would at last be saying…
“Last number, Sir!” For five years as
a camper, I never experienced being
the last person in the line. Always
second to the last, but never last (that
is because I’m still not that tall
enough). My dad said I can be
only a camper if there was still
space—but since I was the most
experienced camper, I became
candidate for junior staff.
At camp, I started doing
my assignment, which was
videotaping. It was tiring yet
fun following the campers
everywhere they go whether
hiking or taking the trolley. I was
praying every time I go with the boys
dorm especially 2B that somehow, they
would get tired and think of taking
the trolley…. But, it never happened
until one camper got himself sprained.
Sometimes I would go from one place
to another (HIKING!) and then back, just
to capture the other dorm’s activity. It
was really exhausting but it would all go
away in an instant once you start seeing
the campers
smiling,
laughing,
singing, and
sometimes,
them just being
plain silly.
I also
miss the times when I was with my
co-camera girl Isis when we did our
usual routine every morning, doing a
singing concert inside the showers. We
just started singing and singing the same
song everyday, repeating the chorus
all the time, without knowing that our
“beautiful” voices were loud enough that
everyone at camp can hear it! Well, it
isn’t that bad…
I never thought that being a junior
staffer would be so much fun! I
thought that being a camper is
the extreme fun while staffers
just keep on serving, cleaning,
cooking and doing all that
routine. But I was wrong. All
my views toward the staffers
were all wrong. I learned that
serving isn’t bad at all and that
serving could be fun and could
make us happier! That’s why
I’m so glad that I became a junior
staff because I was able to snap off
my clouded perception about what it
is like being a staff. I also realized and
experienced how important serving is, in
that way.
I would say the camp has been a
blast, overflowing with fun and spiritual
lessons. I learned a LOT and it was
really a great experience for me, as
well as for
everyone!
We would
closer to my family, friends especially to
our God. I want to share my experience
here in camp to my friends and family.”
—Astrud Baring, 16
“I really enjoyed
attending camp. Now
I know that life is not
always a bed of
roses. First of all,
what I can say is that
camp 2004 has been
the best experience in
my life! Thank you for
everyone who supported me
in this camp. I’m here because of
God and because of God I know what
is good for me and what is bad. I’m
very thankful because I belong to this
United Church of God and He called
me and supported me through all. I’ve
learned what are the true Holy days. I
know what I’m doing for my future.
I’m very happy to attend this summer
camp. I really, really enjoyed this camp.
I learned how to
deal with people,
friends and be
close to God. I
think God gave
me the experience
here at camp so
I can face all my
trials that would
come my way. If
there is no God, I
think I can’t make
it through all the
trials that will
come in my life.
So that’s all I can
say. Thank you all! I will not forget this
Thank you everyone! Always love,”
—Maricel Batigulao, 13
“I really enjoyed this summer camp.
This year’s camp is full of excitement and
adventure. And I learned a lot of things
in our daily activities.
We know that life is not always
a bed of roses. Sometimes it’s a bed
of nails. The character that I want to
develop now is to be strong and to fight
the difficulties that we would encounter
along the way. Especially us as a
student, marami tayong mga outsider
friend na pwedeng mag-influence sa
atin. They’re different from us mahilig
sila sa gimik, night party, atbp. I want to
be an example to everyone around me.
May sayings na “madaling maging
tao pero mahirap magpakatao”. Yeah,
it’s true it’s quite difficult to build
character especially if your friends
are outsiders and naging habit mo na
rin ang ganyang mga attitude. The
most important to every individual is
character. Kaya strive hard to build
character and be better person after all
these things.”
—Stella Mae Cambare, 16
“At first I was so hesitant to join this
camp because I thought I will not enjoy.
I really told myself I would not, but my
parents kept on reminding me that I
should go and join. They exerted a lot of
effort, time and money just for the sake
of our participation in this said activity—
and that’s when I decided to join.
After
a long,
long, travel,
we finally
arrived
here and
eventually
reached the last day of camp. I would
never say I did not enjoy because I DID!
Character Counts!
by Joshua E. Infantado
“Character Counts” and it really
does! This is the theme of the camp
this year. Character is the foundation
of our life. This is the most important
aspect in our life in which our future
depends on. This is what the United
Youth Camp emphasizes in our life.
The camp aims to develop and
improve our character and sure it does!
I have to admit that this camp had a
huge impact and influence in my life.
I never knew how discouraging my
character was until I joined this camp.
In fact, I’ve done bad things in my past
days. I now realize life is worth living.
Every day
in the camp
was filled by
spectacular
experiences
which was
one of a
kind. Every
moment
which I
treasure
added
up to my
knowledge
in building
up the
foundation
of my character. Indeed, this is the
experience of a lifetime. It is not just
an ordinary experience, but the type
of getting along with friends and
God. Together
in developing
character
such as
trustworthiness,
loyalty,
helpfulness,
friendliness, courtesy, kindness,
obedience, cheerfulness, thriftiness,
bravery, cleanliness, and reverence.
Imagine life and every person with
character… what a pleasant life
we would have. This proves
that character really counts.
I love this camp, as if I
don’t want to go home and I
am gonna do this forever. If I
could describe it in one word, it
would be “awesome.” But the
truth is there’s nothing in this
world that could explain what
every camper feels. You have
to experience it for yourself.
Every activity involves mental,
physical, social and spiritual
aspects. I have never been fit in every
aspect of my life but I know this will
take me to
another level
and lead me
to a better
life under the
inspiration of
God.
As
the camp
ends, a new
challenge is
beginning, a
challenge of
doing what I
have learned
to make
the most of
everything through God’s ways. As
I go home, I will cherish everything
especially my friends who eventually
became
my family.
Even
though
we may
all take
different
roads, we
“Character, in the long run,
is the decisive factor in the life
of an individual and of nations
alike.”
—Theodore Roosevelt
all will be in one path and that’s the
path of righteousness toward God’s
Kingdom.” _
From early morning’s CLC up to the
evening activities, every little moment
of every activity
were all worthy to be
remembered.
Today marks the
last day of camping.
Bags should be wellpacked
and everyone
should be ready to go
back home. It’s never
so easy to simply leave
people behind, but
everything has its end.
Yes, I feel sad about
it but on the other
hand, I also feel excited for I have lots of
things to share to my friends, family and
churchmates.
Taken from its theme “Character
counts,” the said camp helped a lot
in developing and building the best
character in us, a character that is very
applicable in our daily life. In short, I
could say that my “first time” is quite
cherishable and treasurable.
I thank GOD for this camp. But sad
to say, I will not be able to join again
next year because of summer classes.
Thinking of it makes me lonely but I know
that God is there—I may not be here next
time but there would surely be more “first
timers” who will be blessed the way I was
BLESSED!”
ito dahil ang mga tao ay mabait,
magalang, maganda talaga ang mga
UYC 2004: An Unforgettable
Experience
by Jeremiah Kenneth M. Tiu
Looking back to the time the
camp started; every one, especially
the first timers, was really shy and
silent—not minding to speak a word.
But this thing changed when every
one started to nurture friendship and
build strong Christian relationships
with each
other—
making this
camp an
enjoyable
and a
successful
one.
As the
United Youth
Camp 2004
ended last
May 23, it
was really a
grieving and
emotional
part for every one of us to wave
our last goodbyes. Tears seemed
to pour from our eyes, reminiscing
those memories we had in camp—
our struggles, our sacrifices, our
experiences, and our enjoyments.
Some of us thought that it was not the
end of everything,
but rather it was
just the beginning
of another journey
towards the
familiar and usual
world again, a
more challenging and real world, with
the knowledge, skills, right character,
attitudes, and Christian values
that UYC has armed us to face the
challenges that life brought to us and
to resist Satan’s
rage and evil
ways.
I would surely
never forget
how this camp
changed and prepared me to become
better individuals of our society and
molded us to become the people God
wants us to
be. So, let
us all take
a stand to
face the
challenges
that life has
so much
given us.
Don’t just
tarry and
never try
to give up
until our
hopes and
dreams will
be ours at last! With all the knowledge
and enjoyments we had in camp,
let us not also forget to say, “Xie
xie ni man!”(Chinese translation for
“Thank you to all!”). Thank you to all
the campers, counselors, staff, and
camp director especially our Father
in Heaven for
making UYC 2004
an unforgettable
experience for
everyone. If God
allows us, let us all
look forward for
another wonderful
camp next year. Cheers! _
“In my daily activities, I’ll try to
do my best. I will be more confident
in facing challenges. I should earn
more responsibilities. When I go back
home, the camper code I must follow:
Trustworthy, loyal, I will stretch my hands
courteous, kind, I should obey, I will try
to be positive, I should learn how to
“I really enjoyed spending my
time in UYC. I’ve learned many things
in this camp, how to cook/bake in
our workshop, the messages of Mr.
Macaraeg in Christian Living Classes
and the different sports. My plan for
the future is to apply the things what
I’ve learned here in UYC. I will apply
this not only in our home but also in our
school and wherever I am. I will also
apply the messages what Mr. Macaraeg
said. In our baking/cooking workshop,
I’m planning to bake in our house
and to show my parents that I know
already how to bake. In arts and crafts,
I can do my own notebook
now. I learned also how to be
responsible for myself. Iiwasan
ko rin ang mga kaibigan ko na
may bad influence (I will avoid
bad company). I will forsake
my activities at school during
Sabbath services because I
know that GOD will make a way.
I will not forget this
beautiful camp I’ve ever
I want this to apply to myself and to
An Impact that Would
Last Forever…
by Audrey Ruth R. Angcos
“You have eight days to make an
impact on the lives of the campers.” That
was the challenge given to us by our camp
director during our pre-camp meeting.
It was my first time to serve as
an assistant counselor. What a great
responsibility! I can make or break these
campers in just eight days! I am committed
in making a positive impact on their lives.
The pre-camp training and orientation were
very helpful. I also tried my best to get
information about the expectations for the
camp. I also prayed for God’s help and
guidance.
I was given the privilege to be an
assistant to Cheryl Lynn Macaraeg, the
counselor of Dorm 2G. We both tried our
best to make our campers feel comfortable
with the new environment and new people
around them. We all became good
friends and started building camaraderie.
Soon, with the help and cooperation of
everybody, we became like a family!
During our quiet time in the
morning, we studied the Bible and prayed
together. Then we started cooking our
breakfast, arranging things, cleaning the
surroundings, washing the dishes, taking a
bath and washing our soiled clothes. Each
had a chore to do for the day. We needed
to move fast so that we can follow the
scheduled activities
for the entire day. We
helped and respected
each other, which
contributed to the
unity of the group.
The activities
were all helpful and
enjoyable! It built
character, which was
the aim of this camp.
We all learned many
things especially
in combating the pressures in this dark
and evil world. It gave us opportunity to
refocus ourselves to God and His kingdom.
The zone gave us a foretaste of how it will
be like in the World Tomorrow. The yells
and laughter added color to the activities.
As the learning increased, the bonding
grew stronger.
At the end of the day, we went back
to our respective dorms and prepared for
dinner, ate, washed our plates, cleaned
up, had a little chat, then hugged and said
good night to one another. We also prayed
together before
sleeping.
As the days
passed by, we got to
know more about one
another. We talked
about our struggles in
life and we also encouraged one another to
make it our legacy to be like real Christians.
“No change of
circumstances can repair a
defect of character.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson
“There’s a lot of things I’ve
learned from this camp. I’m spiritually,
physically, mentally and emotionally
stronger. With the teachings, messages,
and instructions I received within eight
days in camp, I became aware on what I
should fight, practice and improve on in
the future, especially in dealing with peer
pressure. I
learned that
I need to
have strong
faith to fight
it. When
friends
with bad
influence
try to
antagonize
me, I should
always
remember
God. I should not forget that my body
is the temple of the Holy Spirit of God
that I’ve been sanctified through my
parents and will always be different
from the people of this world and being
one of God’s children, obeying His
commandments is the most important
thing I should do. Keeping the Sabbath
day, a holy day of God is one way to
show that I’m a responsible child and
even though it will be hard and I will
suffer a lot, all things will be doing well
if we put our trust in God and above
all things, we or I must know God is
there watching and all we should do,
do everything in love
because from now on
we make “Character
count!”
“On the very first
day, we have been told by our Camp
Director, Mr. Edmond Macaraeg to
pass a write-up, a reflection at the end
of camp about how can this eight-day
experience at UYC change our lives for
5-10 years from now. I asked
myself, would this really make an
impact on my life
Now to the close of this
camp, back-tracking those
activities, Christian Living classes,
the whole camp experience; I
have to say it did. It really did
a great impact that is worth
applying.
Compared to the camps held
before, this was one of a kind. We were
used to be served by staffs and just
do those strenuous activities each day.
Now, we have to cook our own food,
wash the dishes, wash our clothes, and it
was really fun doing it.
But what makes the UYC very
different from other camps is that we
base everything we do in God’s principle.
We must do things not violating God’s
law. As a member of the Church and
knowing the Christian way of living, this
camp helped me develop my personality
and skills that I think are very essential
in living. Even though the camp ended,
I would further like to develop what I
learned cause I believe the things taught
around would make me a better person
and a true Christian.
What
I would
really
miss in
this camp
is the
bonding
us teens
made
to fellow
popularity an accident, riches
take wing, and only character
campers. We made new friends and it
again. But everything has to end.”
and hearing sermons, I decided to be
A UYC Camper is FRIENDLY.
A UYC camper is a friend to all. He
is a brother to other campers. He offers
his friendship to people of all races and
nations, and respects them even if their
beliefs and customs are different from his own.
Once again, the saying, “You
cannot serve two masters at the
same time” came into the picture but
this time in a different application. I
was not to choose between watching
TV and doing assignments, or
having girlfriend while studying, but
whether to follow God or follow
my school. Again, I made the same
crazy idea saying: “I can serve God
while studying!” I’ve been too much
confident thinking that being in the
Church of God is easy. But it’s not!
The word “sacrifice” really applies.
My first encounter with the word
“sacrifice” was really tough. That was
the time when I was left to choose
between taking my final exam and
celebrating the Feast of Tabernacles.
The schedule of our exams was
formerly a week before the Feast but
really, Satan was wise,
that he doesn’t want
anyone to obey God, so
he perhaps have twisted
the mind of the University
President by changing
the schedule making it fall
between the days of the
Feast.
The situation made me feel
hopeless. I was bothered by a lot of
things. First, the policy of the school
stated that no one (even teachers) is
allowed to go out from the school two
weeks before major exams. I tried
resolving this matter by negotiating
with the University President,
who happened to be one of
my professors in my minor
subject (English) but she said,
“No! I’m not allowing you to go out.
That’s the policy of the school. But if
you’re going to insist, I will give you an
INC grade, or worse, will drop you.”
Another professor, who was
the Dean of Student Affairs, did not
approve my excuse letter (she did not
bother to read it either) also sticking
to the school policy. This made me
doubt whether I can attend the Feast
or not. But six other professors
acknowledged my case and allowed
me to take a late exam when I get
back. (Of course, I had a hard time
negotiating with them also.)
The second thing that bothered
me was that my parents did not know
that I was to attend the Feast nor did
they know of the problem that I was
facing in school. I did not try to talk
to them about it because they will not
understand since they were not yet
members of the Church that time. I
was also
afraid of
their reaction
if they knew
that I was
dropping
two subjects.
Two
forces were pulling me from each
side this time. I pictured myself to be
in between two roads that branched
on opposite sides and I only have
to take one of them. I spent many
nights raising sheets of prayers almost
repeating the same words: “God! Help
me! Teach me which way to go.”
“First of all, I want to say thank
you to all of you for being a part of this
year’s camp. I really enjoyed this
year’s camp 2004. Actually the
theme of this camp is “Character
Counts.”
For all the strenuous
activities that we’ve done
and the five-day
Christian Living
Classes, within eight
days, I learned
many things not
o n l y physically but also
spiritually. I learned how to
be aware of peer pressure on the
different areas.
And for all the strengthening and
spiritual lessons to this year’s camp
2004, I plan to apply this to my life.”
—Jennifer Fernandez, 13
“From the time I first joined the
camp (2001) until now, I noticed some
changes in me. How I deal with things
regarding religion and how I deal with
the problems and obstacles. They taught
us to think positively when dealing with
problems. With this and with good
character, I would
be very confident
to face the future,
the challenges of
life.”
—Robby Jane
Cuizon, 17
“I’m so glad
to join the camp. “Honestly, on the first
day of the camp I was so bored, but I
learned many, many more lessons like
how to cook, bake, how to make flower
cards. My plan from what I have learned
in camp is to do it at home.” I met a lot
of friends here that were so nice to me.
And I am so happy/glad that I have nice
and responsible counselors: Ate Audrey
I appreciate all the challenges at camp. I
will improve more and more. I am happy
More comments…
“The summer
camp was filled with
fun, full of excitement
and happiness. I
learned a lot of
things especially on
how to build my own
character, my spirit,
and my faith in God.
I realized that in life
winning is not that
important but building Godly character
should be the focus of every one. I, as a
first-time camper, was able to know that
no matter what happens, God is always
my priority. I learned the words of God,
the importance of friendship in God’s
family, and obedience to parents. In
the video shown entitled ‘Sex has a Price
Tag,’ I learned that this gift from God
should only be done inside marriage.
This camp
greatly affected my
life for it gave me
an opportunity to
share my God-given
talents, build my
confidence, and
give my loyalty to
God. This summer
camp experience will always remain in
my heart.”
by Juanson Barrientos
My experience at the camp was
It Really Works
by Lily James T. Villacote
Way back in the days before attending
this year’s camp, I honestly was not really
interested to
attend. Maybe
it was because I
was afraid that I
would not enjoy
anything, which
was negative, and
another reason
was that I was
not yet enrolled
because at that time, almost all our college
schools were already closed for enrollment.
But I was forced by my parents to attend
camp and they said that I would really
enjoy and learn something from various
activities and it would even change myself.
But that time I was a little bit hardheaded
and I was looking for some excuses so
that I can’t attend. But my parents kept on
encouraging me just to attend camp. Then
I surrendered and said okay, okay, I will go.
Then the time came when it was
already time to leave together with my cocampers
in our congregation. Suddenly,
during that time, I felt a little bit of
excitement to be at camp. And then we
arrived Eden Nature Park, the site where we
were going to have
our camp. Our
activities began the
following day such
as the Christian
Living Classes
(CLC), workshops,
selected indoor
and outdoor sports
activities, and the
best part was the
Wilderness Skills
and Confidence Course where I really
enjoyed. At camp, I experienced cooking
food for our own dorm, role-playing in CLC.
Then one day at the camp, I suddenly
stopped and noticed that I was already
enjoying, having fun and learning from
the various activities together with my cocampers.
I realized those words from my
parents were true. I knew that parents are
always doing things that are good and
beneficial for their children. That’s why
when I got home, I thanked
them for sending me to
camp and proved to them
that I really changed. There
were so many things I
learned from the messages,
lectures, and instructions at
camp, and I know that these
things are beneficial for me
and for my co-campers
as well. Character is one.
Character is very important
to build and mold our own spiritual lives.
Secondly, I was able to learn more about
God’s way of life knowing that it is the first
step to follow His ways and teachings
so that we might be able to be in His
KINGDOM.
Take care and have a nice day! _
—Joshua Infantado
“The United Youth Camp was
awesome! We had fun and we learned a
lot from all the activities. The place was
good. Everyday was worth waking up
for. Christian living classes were more
more on an
important thing is we learned more
about God’s words. Workshops and all
other activities as well as the bonding of
teens were also great. So, why not join
the camp next year”
At the end of the camp, we gave our
phone numbers and addresses so we can
continue to communicate and encourage
one another to hold on and to keep on
track as we return to the pressures of the
world.
We thank
one
for being
a part of
our lives.
And with tears on our eyes, we prayed our
last prayer as a dorm before leaving the
campsite.
Each camper said that this camp was
the best camp ever. They said that they
learned a lot of things, set their
priorities in life, and had the
right goal, which was to be in
the Kingdom of God.
Personally, I can say that this
camp had taught me a lot of things
in becoming a better Christian. It
was indeed a great honor to be
part of this character-building
camp!
I want to take this
opportunity to thank all the
people who worked hard, prayed,
and contributed for the success of this
year’s camp. For the campers, staff and
all the brethren around the world, and
most of all, to our Almighty Father who
made this camp possible, Thank You
very much for making a great impact in
our lives… an impact that would last
forever. The memories of this camp,
including the lessons
that we learned
will be treasured
and cherished
forever… _
something more to that. Let’s get a clue difference between these two examples
in answer to this question from a case is faithful obedience to God’s law—
which develops
in biblical
history.
Actually,
there was
such a being
who had all
these great
qualities.
Prior to his fall, he was better known in
Latin as Lucifer, but after his rebellion
as Satan. We can read about his great
attributes in Ezekiel 28:12-15. But why
was he expelled (verse 16) from such
high position of power and authority
A UYC Camper is BRAVE.
A UYC camper can face danger
even if he is afraid. He has the courage
to stand for what he thinks is right even
if others laugh at him or threaten him.
the mind and
character of
God in us. It is
not just ability,
experience, or
wisdom, but
godly character
in us. In God’s eyes, this is the real
thing that counts! Whatever we may
lack in wisdom, experience, ability and
power, God can easily give that to us in
an instant—but not the godly character
which we have to personally develop.
I set before
you today life
and prosperity,
death and
destruction.”
Verse 19
adds and
admonishes:
“blessing and
cursing; therefore choose life, that both
you and your descendants may live.”
As we live in this world and make
daily decisions. God is watching how
we conduct and prioritize our lives.
In Matthew 6:33, Christ advises us
in the context of pursuing the basic
necessities in life, “But seek first the
kingdom of God and His
righteousness, and all these
things shall be added to
you.” This process of godly
character development
follows the principle of
sowing and reaping (Gal. 6:
7); corresponding also with
the law of cause-and-effect.
Quoted below is a maxim on
this important subject:
Sow a thought, and
reap an act;
Sow an act, and reap
a habit;
Sow a habit, and reap a
character;
Sow a character, and reap a
destiny.
Our ultimate destiny is to be part of
the supreme family of God and to rule
in His mighty Kingdom forever. But that
is possible only if we have developed
godly righteous character. And that is
where ultimately—character counts! _
together to learn from each other and to
edify one another in a place that literally
breathes rebirth and freshness.
A lot of lessons can be learned from
camp. It can start from an unusually
shy beginning,
or a negative
idea on camp, to
missing family, an
embarrassing public
blunder, a good and
lasting experience
like eating on
banana leaves, and
like falling from a high wall!
For whatever it is, the end result
is still that we have we have had the
experience of the high and the low roads
and luckily have learned the ropes of
combating Satan’s devices and tactics
expounded on our Christian Living Classes
at camp.
Now we can begin to live life
differently than the way we have been
used to, and ready to make ourselves
used in God’s service and be ready for
His Kingdom! And I would say that now
is not the time to lag, lose fervor, be
unkempt, be dull, lose touch and be sorry
for our past mistakes. Altogether now,
let us all say that “Character Counts” and
NOW is the time to WIN! _
A UYC Camper is REVERENT.
A UYC camper is reverent
toward God. He is faithful
in his religious duties. He
respects the beliefs of others.
that you should debate with an unbeliever or try
to convince an unbeliever that what you believe
is what all people should believe. If someone
asks you sincerely, then tell him what you
believe and not just what your parents believe.
If it seems that he/she just wants to outwit
or humiliate you, then avoid conversing with
him/her. If they ask you why you don’t attend
Saturday classes and you reason out that it
is because your parents tell you so, then you
dishonor God because you are ashamed of what
you believe.
When I was in high school, I found out
that some of my classmates think that the
Church where we belong forces others and me
to do such practices. I was afraid that they
would think of me
as impractical or
stupid or foolish. I
sometimes gave
my classmates the
impression that I do
not approve of what
my parents want
even if I did.
Now I realize how I dishonored God. So
now I try to think of how can someone glorify
God rather than trying to get the
“praise of men.” Glorifying God
means keeping away from any pervert
or corrupt thing that this world
offers. We should try to have the
lifestyle that God wants us to have
and not the “good lifestyle” that this
world defines. All things that God
does is good, really good, therefore
we should depend on our Creator.
God wants us to love Him with
all our soul and with all our
heart and love our neighbor as
ourselves.
Great character cannot be
achieved instantly. You need to
clean your mind from any kind of
evil thing and fill it with love, faith
and hope. We need to keep our eyes and ears
from anything evil and focus instead on what
God wants us to see and hear. We need to
devote ourselves on doing good things. If you
think you can’t have happiness with this kind
of life, I think it would be far worse if you would
conform to this world.
Let us study the examples and teachings
written in the Bible and observe the examples
that our parents set before us that they want us
to follow.
Let us always remember our Creator and
glorify Him because He will soon make this
world a part of His Kingdom and Jesus Christ
will be our King. _
