A
Significance of aquaculture
By the year 2030, aquaculture will dominate fish supplies and
less than half of the fish consumed is likely to originate in
capture fisheries. Consumers are demanding consistent quality
and availability of seafood while still maintaining safety and
sustainability. Aquaculture comprises a range of biologically
diverse species and more or less technologically advanced
production systems. Each species and each system has its own
requirements and challenges concerning temperature, water
quality and feed. This issue needs to be addressed as well as the
environmental hazards resulting from intensive use of chemical
agents in aquaculture. Considering alternative approaches to
improve health and performance is therefore one of the challenges
facing fish production today.
Challenges in aquaculture
As aquaculture continues to develop, there will be an increasing
need to use alternative raw materials, for instance soy bean meal
instead of fishmeal. Replacing fishmeal with alternative protein
sources may have adverse effects on health and growth. Stress
from overstocking, inferior feeds etc. may lead to loss of intestinal
integrity, a challenged immune system, non optimal nutrient
absorption and consequentially to loss of performance (fig.1).
A healthy digestive system is crucial for optimal performance.
The role of the intestinal microflora in fish nutrition is less defined
than in land animals. It has been shown, however, that
host microbiota interactions also in fish has implications for the
immune status and metabolic activity. There has been a growing
interest in the fish industry to control the intestinal flora through
alternative means like pro- and prebiotics, acidifiers and yeasts.
Solutions for aquaculture
With Anta ® Phyt Dr. Eckel has developed a line of feed additives
based on natural plant ingredients and specifically selected components
to support a healthy gut flora and promote performance
(fig. 2). Anta ® Phyt Aqua was selected for fish nutrition and
is uniquely adapted to this purpose. Apart from prebiotics and
acidifiers it contains a group of plant based components that have
Fig. 2: Anta ® Phyt product line
already demonstrated their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial
activity in a number of in vitro and in vivo trials.
An ethanolic extract of the flavonoids contained in Anta ® Phyt
demonstrated an inhibiting effect on the pro-inflammatory factor
nf-κB (Geßner et al. 2011) while a different component could be
shown to have the same antibacterial effect as the well known
antibiotic Monensin (internal research, 2011).
Plant based additives have also shown their efficacy in vivo, with
garlic and oregano increasing the survival rate of tilapia, trout and
catfish infected with Aeromonas hydrophila (Gabor et al. 2010).
The importance of yeast cell walls and ß-glucans for immune stimulation
in fish nutrition has also been well proven while acidification
with organic acids has been shown to improve growth
performance.
A sophisticated manufacturing process of Anta ® Phyt Aqua
guarantees an optimal release of the active components.
A
Trial results with Anta ® Phyt Aqua
At the University of Munich a trial with carp was conducted to
test the efficacy of Anta ® Phyt Aqua in the feed. The diet was
based on fish meal, soy protein, peas, wheat and maize. Three
groups were tested in the trial: a negative control, a positive
control and Anta ® Phyt Aqua. The starting weight of the animal
was 80 g and the final weight 200 g. The duration of the trial
was 10 weeks.
The result of the trial is shown in fig. 3. During the 10 week trial
period the average daily weight gain in the Anta ® Phyt Aqua
group was increased by 11 % compared to the negative control
and final weight was increased by 5 %.
avg. daily gain (g)
