About our company
Previously trading as Adelaide Hills Vineyard Contractors, Infield offers a comprehensive range
of viticultural services throughout the Adelaide Hills and surrounding districts.
Infield currently provides consultancy, management and contractor services across a broad spectrum
of agricultural activities. We can supply all the services required to produce premium products in a cost
effective manner. We are to achieve this by offering:

Since the early nineties Infield has developed and managed numerous vineyard projects in a range of
locations around Australia. These have varied in size from specialist boutique vineyards, to major
developments for large corporations.
Produce from all our managed vineyards finds its way to several well‐known Australian wine brands. Our
managed vineyards have SCI HACCP certification meeting the food safety standards for the growing,
harvesting and dispatch of wine grapes. The company also owns and manages its own vineyard in the
Adelaide Hills.

call. Every decision made and task undertaken is crucial to the viability of your vineyard and
an efficient and timely management program will make a major difference to profitability.
Launched in May 2010, Infield has led the way in offering a range of fixed‐price packages from which
a discerning grower can choose:

Suitable for established growers with iconic vineyards or blocks

Suitable for high and commercial grade contracted growers

Back to basics package for vineyards seeking lowest production costs. It is also suitable for
vineyards that experience less pest and disease outbreak pressure.

Suitable for transitioning organic growers
Apart from the pricing structure, what’s different about our packages are that they are orientated
towards achievable outcomes for your vineyard, and although mindful of current economic
uncertainties, our packages do not compromise our workmanship.
By undertaking a structured management service you will be able to eliminate the need for shopping
around to secure the best value for your vineyard operations. A formal service agreement will also
reduce any seasonal uncertainties in sourcing labour, equipment and materials for your vineyard.

Technical support services
Growing premium quality grapes is a highly technical operation requiring access to a range of
up to date information to enable the right decisions to be made.
At Infield our technical support services include:
Pest and disease monitoring
This service involves regular vineyard inspections to allow for effective control measures. The use of
sophisticated weather monitoring equipment and disease prediction software to back up physical
inspections.
Bud dissection
To ascertain potential bud fruitfulness and necrotic bud levels.
Petiole testing
Sampling of leaf tissue to check plant health and nutrition to determine corrective action such as the
application of growth stimulants or fertiliser.
Vine spraying programs
Follow up fungicide and insect pest spraying according to the seasonal needs of your vineyard.

Contracting services
For the every day tasks of running a vineyard, Infield provides a comprehensive range of
specialist contracting services.
Vine management
Vital services to achieve full fruit production, Infield can deliver mechanical pre‐pruning followed by
cane or spur pruning by hand. In addition to pruning, our viticulturists can assist with vine training,
raising and lowering foliage wires, crop thinning, maturity sampling and bird control.
Vine spraying
In addition to our vine management and vineyard monitoring services, we have qualified staff and
spraying equipment to carry out your vine spraying program.
Soil inputs, mid‐row management and weed control
Essential to good vineyard management, this service utilises the most appropriate control measure
taking into account the time of year, weed varieties and sound environmental practices. Weed
spraying and mid‐row slashing services are part of this service.
Annual applications of fertiliser, lime, gypsum and organic mulch, mechanical soil conditioning and
midrow seeding help make up our complement of contractor services. The application of fertiliser
through the irrigation system can be arranged as required, or determined through tissue testing.
Trellis repairs
Infield can inspect your vineyard and undertake seasonal trellis repairs or major trellis upgrades.
Water resources
Managed according to vineyard requirements and employing appropriate moisture monitoring
technology, Infield can co‐ordinate the management of water on your property by a variety of
means:
> Assessment of water resources and water quality testing
> Chemical flushing of bores and irrigation systems
> Irrigation system design and installation
> Pump shed construction
> Irrigation system maintenance and troubleshooting

Innovation
Infield has a range of treatment solutions that will improve water quality and irrigation system
performance including on‐going treatment options to maintain contaminant free water. New
technology allows us to assess your bore or dam and using our recently commissioned Water
Treatment Unit to carry out any necessary treatment. These treatments are more effective and
safer to use both for the operator and the system, and kinder to the environment than traditional
chlorine and sulphuric acid treatments.
Infield also supplies and installs systems suitable for continuous water treatment programs.

Vintage operations
We appreciate that vintage can be a very demanding time for growers requiring efficiency in
time management to ensure that you can meet winery scheduling commitments.
Having over a decade of industry experience, Infield has accumulated the expertise and resources to
undertake all your machine and hand harvesting requirements. Our fleet of self‐propelled harvesters,
backup equipment, trained staff and thorough preparation will help ensure the success of your vintage.
With experienced teams of pickers at our disposal, we can also offer the more traditional handpicking
alternative.
For Infield, vintage starts in November with our early‐bird mail out. From the revised information
received we can begin to anticipate picking times. As the season progresses, your harvesting is further
scheduled based on the result of grape ripeness testing and winery preferences.
Start and finish times are then scheduled and allowances for machinery delivery, hygiene requirements,
on‐site facilities and fuelling are factored in. Timing is finally determined by weather conditions.

Development services
Infield has been involved in the development of numerous vineyard projects over the past
decade with satisfied clients in a variety of locations who can vouch for the quality of the
infrastructure in the projects we have undertaken.
Forwarding planning ensures that your new vineyard will be managed efficiently, and therefore
economically in the future. We neither compromise on materials, nor work standards.

Vineyard redevelopment
The wine grape industry is facing long‐term challenges in regard to oversupply especially when
considered on a variety or regional basis. As a consequence all stakeholders are reviewing their
businesses according to these pressures.
Infield has developed its own system for vineyard refurbishment. With minimum disturbance to the
vineyard infrastructure, our system reduces the cost of changing varieties and ensures your potential for
returning to full production in the shortest possible time.
Our system involves:
> Removal of the old cordon arms
> Vine stump excavation and trash removal
> Soil assessment and conditioning
> Midrow treatment and fertiliser application
> Sourcing new vines and water jet planting the replacement variety.
Infield can also provide complete grafting or top‐working services as another cost‐effective way to
change varieties. Our experience has shown that the four most important factors are:
> Meticulous preparation
> Correct timing
> Experienced grafters
> Frequent vine training and post‐grafting care
Compared with other refurbishment methods, a successful top‐working outcome may result in waiting
one year less to achieve production.

Environmental projects
Biodiversity for sustainability and profit
Infield has been trialling the use of buckwheat at various locations in the Adelaide Hills since
2007, as part of an on‐going biodiversity project.
These trials were fundamental in recommendations being made to the Australian Federal Government for
additional assessments in other Australian wine regions. The aim of the project was to document seeding
and water requirements, thereby, encouraging uptake by other growers interested in utilising nectar
plants for biological control.
In collaboration with the Lincoln University (NZ) and Melbourne University, Infield is now recognised as
the primary “pathway to adoption” partner for its on‐going biodiversity program.
Research has confirmed that buckwheat has outstanding potential to create a favourable environment for
beneficial insects with a corresponding ability to significantly reduce traditional vineyard overheads. The
cost is comparable to that of a single spray application used in the control of Light Brown Apple Moth,
scale and other insect pests.
Adopting these practices will ensure a number of benefits and cost‐savings and include:

Reduction in the use of insecticides
Protection from LBAM infestation after chemical control window closes
Long term investment in the biodiversity of your property
Infield has also developed its own direct sowing system and equipment suitable for use in a variety of
conditions, the Eco‐seeder.
