all New Engl<strong>and</strong>, it is yet true that most extensive<br />

fields <strong>of</strong> historic interest are held in survey."<br />

As to the contemporary st<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> this book, I<br />

desire to call a witness, first qualifying him as an<br />

1872 ; Representative <strong>of</strong> Third <strong>Massachusetts</strong> District<br />

in Forty-third Congress ; Honorary Member <strong>of</strong> Historical<br />

Societies <strong>of</strong> New York, Pennsylvania, Florida<br />

<strong>and</strong> Wisconsin ;<br />

Corresponding Member <strong>of</strong> the Philadelphia<br />

Numismatic <strong>and</strong> Antiquarian Society, etc.<br />

President <strong>of</strong> the New Engl<strong>and</strong> Historic-Genealogical<br />

Society ; Solicitor <strong>of</strong> the War Department at Washington<br />

during the War <strong>of</strong> the Rebellion, <strong>and</strong> author<br />

<strong>of</strong> an important work, called " The War Powers <strong>of</strong><br />

the President."<br />

Mr. Whiting was a lineal descendant <strong>of</strong> Samuel<br />

Whiting, the first minister <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lynn</strong>. As a labor <strong>of</strong><br />

love he wrote <strong>and</strong> printed, not published, an elaborate<br />

<strong>and</strong> exhaustive " Memoir <strong>of</strong> Rev. Samuel Whiting,<br />

D.D., <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> his Wife, Elizabeth St. John, with<br />

References to some <strong>of</strong> their English Ancestors <strong>and</strong><br />

American Descendants."<br />

Mr. Whiting fortified his statements, like careful<br />

historians <strong>and</strong> pleaders, by numerous citations from<br />

competent authorities, such as the <strong>Massachusetts</strong><br />

Records, the Histories <strong>of</strong> Hutchinson, Minot, Bancr<strong>of</strong>t,<br />
