There was no lapse in the Hitchings name <strong>and</strong><br />

occupation till May 6, 1765, when Joseph Hitchings<br />

has since disappeared. Adam 1 died while still a<br />

young man. His kinsman, Thomas Hawkes, administered<br />

upon the estate, <strong>and</strong> after its sale his widow<br />

<strong>and</strong> children removed to Boston. Among his descendants<br />

<strong>of</strong> the present time is Adam Augustus Hawkes,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Wakefield, a frequent visitor at the old place.<br />

Joseph Hitchings, the grantor, was the son <strong>of</strong><br />

Elkanah, who was the son <strong>of</strong><br />

Daniel.<br />
