Gloves
Abena’s expert knowledge and experience help you select
the best glove for specific needs. The most important
parameter when choosing a glove is the intended
application of the glove and the consequent need for
protection against various risks.
Therefore, Abena’s gloves concept covers a wide variety
of medical gloves as well as protective gloves.
Medical Gloves
The medical gloves include products for all protection
and hygiene applications in the health care sector. All
medical gloves meet the highest level of quality and
safety and comply with all relevant European standards
such as the series of EN 455 standards. Some of the
medical gloves are dual labeled, which means they can
also be used as protective gloves.
Medical gloves exist in different qualities:
•¡
Nitrile
•¡
Latex
•¡
Vinyl
They are divided into two categories, namely hospicare
gloves and Abena gloves. Please refer to the individual
sections of this catalogue for detailed information about
the different qualities and their applications.
Protective Gloves
The protective gloves are divided into single use gloves
and household gloves, as well as some undergloves. The
gloves chosen in this category can be used either as
protection against minimal risks or for specific needs in
the cleaning or laboratory sector.
Legislation
Gloves
It can be difficult to understand the legislation for the labelling and classification
of gloves. With this guidance we try to make it more clear and easy.
Photo courtesy of Dipped Products PLC
General
The sale of gloves in the EU requires that they are
CE-marked. Gloves can be marked as medical device or as
protective clothing or – according to the new declaration
for medical device – as both.
If a glove is CE-marked as both medical device and
protective clothing it needs to comply with both directives
described below. This folder describes the
2 directives individually.
What is the difference between a medical glove and
a protective glove
A medical glove is defined as: gloves intended for use in
the medical field to protect patient and user from crosscontamination
A protective glove is defined as: Personal protective
equipment, which protects the hand or part of the hand
against hazards. It can additionally cover part of the
forearm and arm.
Which standards must the gloves comply with
The medical gloves must comply with the Medical
Device Directive (MDD)
To prove this the gloves are tested according to
several harmonized standards:
EN 455-1: Medical gloves for single use – Part 1:
Requirements and testing for freedom from holes
EN 455-2: Medical gloves for single use – Part 2:
Requirements and testing for physical properties.
EN 455-3: Medical gloves for single use – Part 3:
Requirements and testing for biological evaluation
EN 455-4: Medical gloves for single use –
Part 4: Requirements and testing for shelf life
determination
Protective gloves must comply with the requirements
of the directive for Personel Protective
Equipment.
The standards which apply to protective gloves
are among others:
EN 420: Protective gloves – General
requirements and test methods
EN 374-1: Protective gloves against chemicals
and micro-organisms – Part 1: Terminology and
performance requirements.
EN 374-2: Protective gloves against chemicals
and micro-organisms – Part 2: Determination of
resistance to penetration
EN 374-3: Protective gloves against chemicals
and micro-organisms – Part 3: Determination of
resistance to permeation by chemicals
EN 388: Protective gloves against mechanical
risks.
Disposable Medical Gloves
Medical examination gloves
are class I medical device
This means that the
manufacturer is responsible
to ensure that the gloves
comply with the requirements
of the CE-labelling of gloves.
Medical sterile examination
gloves are class Is device
Also here the producer is
responsible to ensure that
the gloves comply with the
requirements for CE-labelling but
the sterilisation proces needs to
be approved by a notified body.
Therefore, the CE-label must
be followed by 4 digits for the
identification of the notified body.
Medical sterile surgical gloves
are class IIa medical device
Surgical gloves must be approved
by a notified body. The CE-label
must be followed by 4 digits for
the identification of the notified
body.
EN 455-1: Medical gloves for
single use – Part 1: Requirements and testing
for freedom from holes
The AQL level for pinholes has to be 1,5 to meet
the requirements for this standard.
EN 455-2: Medical gloves for single use –
Part 2: Requirements and testing for physical
properties
This standard sets requirements to the width
and length of the different sizes of gloves.
Furthermore, there are requirements for the
force at break
EN 455-3: Medical gloves for single
use – Part 3: Requirements and testing for
biological evaluation
This standard describes how to test the gloves
(latex) for the protein content. There are references
to standards, where gloves are tested as to
irritation and sensibilisation. Furthermore, it is
required of the manufacturers not to use chemicals
in the production, which can be harmful to health.
If this is not possible, these chemicals must be
limited to an absolute minimum. Furthermore, there
are demands as to the cleanness of sterile gloves.
EN 455-4: Medical gloves for single use –
Part 4: Requirements and testing for shelf life
determination
The shelf life of the gloves must be tested both
by accelarated ageing, but also by ageing over real
time. When expiring the gloves must still comply
with the 3 above mentioned standards.
Protective Gloves
Protective gloves are divided into 3 categories:
Category 1 – Simple category
Category 2 – Intermediate category
Category 3 – Complex categori
Category 1:
Gloves of this category are for
low risk working tasks. In some
cases it would be possible to
conduct these tasks without
gloves.
Category 2:
In this category the gloves are
tested according to one or more
standards (described below).
They are marked with pictograms
to indicate the risks they protect
against and to which extent. The
gloves are CE-labelled and the
pictograms only apply if the tests
are conducted by an independent
testing institute.
Category 3:
The gloves in this category
protect the users against
external risks - in some cases
fatal risks. These gloves are
also tested according to one
or more standards, just like
the gloves of category 2.
Furthermore, the manufacturer
needs approval according to
a quality system (such as ISO
9001) to ensure an equal
production. In addition to the
CE-label these gloves carry a
4 digit code, which identifies the
notified body, which approved
the production.
Standards for the testing of gloves:
EN 420: Protective gloves – General
requirements and testing methods
EN 374-1: Protective gloves against
chemicals and micro-organisms
– Part 1: Terminology and
performance requirements.
EN 374-2: Protective gloves against
chemicals and micro-organisms –
Part 2: Determination of resistance
to penetration
These 2 pictograms can be used for
gloves, which are tested according
to the test methods described in EN
374-2, and they must at least comply
with level 2, which also means that
they meet AQL 1.5
This pictogram means
protection against
micro organisms.
This pictogram means
protection against low
risk chemicals.
EN 374-3:
Protective gloves against chemicals
and micro-organisms – Part 3:
Determination of resistance to
permeation by chemicals
This symbol applies if the
glove can resist permeation
of 3 of the following
chemicals for at least 30
minutes.
The chemicals against which the glove provides protection must be mentioned
with the symbols stated below:
A – methanol
B – acetone
C – acetonitrile
D – dichloromethane
E – carbon disulfide
F – toluene
G – diethylamine
H – tetrahydrofuran
I – ethyl acetate
J – n-heptane
K – Sodium hydroxide 40%
L – Sulphuric acid 96%
Permeation time converted to protectionindex:
1 > 10 min
2 > 30 min
3 > 60 min
4 > 120 min
5 > 240 min
6 > 480 min
EN 388: Protective gloves against
mechanical risks.
The pictogram is used when the
glove is tested against mechanical
risks. 4 numbers will be stated
under the pictogram.
These numbers refer to, in given order, how resistant the glove is against the following:
A. Abrasion resistance (0-4)
B. Blade cut resistance (0-5)
C. Tear resistance (0-4)
D. Puncture resistance (0-4)
0 is the lowest value and 5 the highest.
