REGISTRATION OF COURSES
Semester 1 2010-2011
(First Year Students)
1. REGISTRATION OF COURSES
First year students need to fulfill the academic requirements of 6 Core Courses, 2 General
Education Requirement Prescribed Electives (GER-PE) and 4 Unrestricted Electives (UE) in
the Academic Year.
1.1 Year 1 Core Courses (compulsory)
COM201 and COM203 will be allocated to ALL Year 1 students.
In addition, the University has randomly assigned to all first year students either
COM204 Basic Media Writing or COM205 Speech and Argumentation for
Semester 1 2009-2010.
As these core courses are automatically allocated to you by the system, students
need NOT register for them via the registration system, STARS.
However, if any of these core courses are not allocated to you, please alert the
course advisor immediately.
1.2 GER-PEs and/or UEs
The School recommends a normal load of around 20 AUs per semester.
As only three courses (12 AUs) have been allocated, students need to register for
themselves additional GER-PEs and/or UEs via STARs during Registration
period.
Students may take CS courses at the lower level as UEs if they so wish.
Notes on GERs:
For WKWSCI Students, GER comprises core courses, prescribed electives (GER-PE) and
unrestricted electives (GER-UE).
(i) GER-PE is divided into 3 sub-areas of studies in key fields of knowledge
comprising Art, Humanities & Social Sciences [GER-PE(AHSS)], Science, Technology &
Society [GER-PE(STS)] and Business & Management [GER-PE(BM)]. The courses are
offered to students from all programmes.
WKWSCI students are required to take 3 AUs (usually one course) from GER-PE (AHSS),
9 AUs (usually three courses) from GER-PE (STS) and 3 AUs (usually one course) from
GER-PE (BM).
(ii) GER-UE refers to any other courses offered at the School and University level
but do not count as Core or GER-PE for your concentration.
Practicum courses offered by WKWSCI are NOT open to first year students during the
first semester. However, poly students and other students with relevant media experiences
may get special approval by the school to take such courses.

2. REGISTRATION AND ADD/DROP PERIODS

so during the Add/Drop period. The Add/Drop period will be advised later (refer to

Year 1 and 2 students are NOT allowed to register for Year 3 and 4 courses beginning
with the code COM4XX.
Students can register for additional CS subjects at the lower level and/or GER-PEs and
Students are advised to refer to the write-up on Curriculum Structure and Registration
