OPENING DAY
Thursday 10am
Designer
Challenge
Ever since FitzRoy James Henry Somerset—the British
lord and field marshal who became the 1st Baron
Raglan—lost his right arm in battle and began wearing
coats with a diagonal armhole, the world has found the
raglan sleeve to be a comfortable, forgiving style.
Fiona
Ellis
Cornelia
Tuttle Hamilton
Barry
Klein
We all know that, unless dropped by design, a garment’s
shoulders should end at the same place as the wearer’s
shoulders. Raglans change the game by removing that
point of reference.
We know raglans are great for kids—the “shoulders”
continue to fit as a child grows— and that they’re also a
good choice for broad-shouldered men, and are perfect
for active wear.
But we’re about to broaden the playing field for the
raglan game with the Lady Raglan Challenge.
RAGLANS can be about fit
RAGLANS can be about fashion
RAGLANS can be about design
opportunities for stitch and color.
Perhaps the RAGLAN’S diagonal can
even take a new turn.
The raglan gives a unique opportunity to mix
stitch and color patterns in sleeve and body.
Let’s dust off those double decreases (or
increases!) and consider whether triples could
come into play, try top-down or bottom-up,
solve problems with fit, combine patterns with
different stitch-to-row ratios . . .
Continued on next page.
OPENING DAY
Thursday 10am
Designer
Challenge
Fiona, Cornelia, and Barry are looking
forward to this challenge and the
opportunity to take a fresh look at the
raglan—with you in mind! Each will come
up with 3 design ideas and 1 complete
garment, which will then appear on
stage at Opening Day and in the Winter
issue of Knitter’s Magazine. They will also
take you through their individual design
processes—often the best part!
Join us!
Fiona Ellis
Since graduating with a degree in fashion knitwear
design in 1993, Fiona has been designing handknits
professionally. Her work is much sought after with
sustained exposure in leading magazine publications,
online at Twist Collective, and for yarn companies. She
has produced original concepts for major fashion houses
in London, Paris, and New York. Fiona teaches hands-on
workshops at conferences and guild events and is an
on-line instructor at Craftsy.com. She is the author of
Inspired Cable Knits, Knitspiration Journal, and Inspired Fair
Isle Knits.
Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton
Cornelia has applied a talent for combining colors and
structure to designing handknits. Her career started
in New York, designing for magazines and selling her
handknit collection in boutiques from Florida to Alaska.
Now the author of 13 pattern books, including her latest
featuring Universal Yarn’s Poems Collection, Cornelia
divides her time between Sweden and the US.
Barry Klein
Trendsetter Yarns company owner/designer has been
knitting for 40 years. He started designing in his family’s
knitting store, where all patterns were designed for the
individual knitter’s body. He has taught knitting all over
the world and written 5 knitting books, including The
New Knitter’s Template with Laura Bryant.
Lorilee Beltman
2013
This former yarn shop owner’s experience providing answers for a steady stream of questioning knitters taught her the value of
delivering an honest answer with kindness. Her designs have appeared in Interweave Knits, Sockupied, and Twist Collective. Lorilee’s
continental knitting video is #1 on Youtube with well over half a million views. Besides teaching continental, she enjoys teaching
projects that introduce new techniques. For her, a classroom full of curious minds is a most happy place. Since 2009, she has
enjoyed her students at national events and now looks forward to meeting you in class! She enjoys tent-camping with her husband
and boys and has been to over twenty National and Provincial Parks.
Friday 8:30 am - 11:30 am
582-3 Easy Pick Your Knits and Purls: Continental Knitting
Introduction
When you learn Lorilee’s brand of continental knitting, you will
minimize your hand motions for a more comfortable, and perhaps speedier, way to
knit. Each finger has a job to do. Understand exactly what motions have a bearing
on stitch gauge. (It’s not what you think!) Learn to create even knitting by sizing
your knits and purls equally. Learn how your choice of tools affects your outcome.
Practice the knit stitch then move on to purl, increases, decreases, and ribbing
where efficiency really pays off.
Friday 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
NEW 517-3 Intermediate Professional Looking Cuffs Using the Magic
Cast-on
Learn to knit professional looking cuffs and hems without crochet
hooks or waste yarn. Class begins by learning Judy’s Magic Cast-on and proceeds
to knitting in the round to learn first hand what a beautifully-tensioned invisible
cast can look like. Next we work a hemmed cuff, both plain and picot without waste
yarn or sewing down bulky edges. Finally, create the professional and tidy tubular
cast-on in 1 x 1 and 2 x 2 rib, again without waste yarn or a crochet hook. These
memorizable techniques will be your new “go-to” skills for provisional starts and for
sweater, hat, and mitten cuffs.
notes:
levels:
Crochet-friendly class
No skills required
Easy You should know the basics,
how to increase and decrease, and
have made at least one garment.
Intermediate You should have
worked with a few stitch patterns and
should be familiar with basic garment
shaping.
Advanced You should have made
several garments in various stitch
patterns and should be comfortable
making minor changes to patterns.
Saturday 8:30 am - 11:30 am and Saturday 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
518-6 Easy Pick Your Knits and Purls: Expanded This 6 hour classes will
not only not only cover the materials in the 3-hour Pick Your Knits and Purls class,
but we’ll launch into using our Continental style to go beyond the knit and purl
stitch. We’ll learn ways to enlist ‘helper’ fingers to accomplish trickier maneuvers
including increases, decreases, slip-stitch patterning, cables, lace, and bobbles. Each
student will get individual attention. The goal is to cement your learning by having
more time with the teacher’s eyes on your hands, and to realize that all knitting
maneuvers can be achieved in your new style.
Sunday 8:30 am - 11:30 am and Sunday 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
674-6 Intermediate Vertically Stranded Color Work Explore various
ways that color can be added when contrasting stitches climb vertically from
round to round. These techniques do not inhibit the elasticity of the fabric. Always
working in the round, we’ll play with simple zigs and zags, intersecting lines for
diagonal plaid, lines between lace, and purl-only columns that look like caterpillars.
We’ll explore its sketchy history. It is used in Rovaniemi knitting, as a substitute for
duplicate stitch in argyle, and it even appears in a Japanese stitch dictionary. After
class apply the coloring techniques to existing patterns worked in the round.
then joined and knit in the round following the gussets. Mattress stitch
is used to invisibly join the leg and the instep seams. This class will have
samples, charts and instructions for all sizes, from baby socks to adult male,
and will show how to modernize the Argyle using new yarns and fun color
combinations. Learn to do intarsia, read a color chart, work duplicate stitch,
invisible seaming, how to knit a gusset heel flat, ways to knit and close a toe,
and how to weave in ends efficiently.
916-3 Intermediate Lacey Miters Mitered squares provide a
great way to use up leftover bits of yarn while adding color and texture
to your project. Adding a little lace will totally change the look of your
mitered square projects. Learn to read and create lacey mitered square
charts and tips and tricks to getting great lacey squares. We’ll discuss using
lacey mitered squares as accents, as well as for an unshaped (e.g. triangle or
rectangle shawl) and shaped garments (e.g. sweaters). Students will receive a
scarf pattern though in class we will work on smaller samples.
695-3 Easy Slipped Stitch Mania Slipped stitch patterns allow you
to create the look of 2-color knitting while only using 1 color per row or
add texture while using only 1 color. Mosaic knitting (one form of slipped
stitch patterning) can bring to mind beautiful, Native American fiber art. No
stranding, bobbins, or changing color within the row. In this class we will
explore different techniques as well as the do’s and don’ts of this method
of knitting.
2013
Gwen Bortner is a Craft Yarn Council Certified Teacher, teaching at venues throughout the country. She is the author of the book,
Entrée to Entrelac. Her designs can be found in a variety of knitting magazines and through her business, Knitability, LLC. Education is
probably the most important component of the Knitability business plan as all efforts focus on the company motto of “Taking Knitters
to the Next Level”. Whether teaching at a local yarn shop or at a national knitting convention, meeting new people and sharing the
love of knitting is one of her greatest joys. Gwen’s teaching philosophy can be summed up in the following quote, “As a teacher, my
goal is to help students increase the size of their knitting ‘tool box’. Although I may have a preference, experience has shown that my
preferred way is rarely the only way. My mantra is ‘knitting is fun’ and if class isn’t fun, then I am not doing my job.”
when reversed. However, it is possible to create a double-knit fabric with two
different patterns. Learn the secrets of creating different patterns on each side
of the work. Explore options for using two or three colors. Gain insights on
creating your own double-knit designs. Along the way pick up helpful hints
to improve the look of your finished projects.
558-3 Intermediate Knitting in Both Directions Most of us
knit in one direction, but what would happen if you could knit in EITHER
Laura Bryant
With a degree in fine arts from the University of Michigan, Laura began Prism Yarns in 1984. She continues as
Prism’s creative force, specializing in color and hand-dyed yarns and has published over 70 pattern booklets for
Prism. Laura has written six books, including The Yarn Stash Workbook, The New Knitter’s Template (coauthored
with Barry Klein), and recently produced the DVD Knitter’s Guide to Color with Laura Bryant and Yarn to Fit with
Barry Klein. Her newest book, Artful Color, Mindful Knits from XRX Books is available now. She teaches and
designs with a ‘no rules’ approach, and her classes are designed to bring out the creativity within all of us.
Thursday 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
102-3 No skill required Intro to Color Color brings life and
excitement to our knitting, yet many feel uncertain about how to approach
color. The human eye is capable of discerning over three million distinct
colors, yet most of us have untrained eyes. Learn about color from an artist’s
perspective and begin a journey of enhanced perception. Laura presents color
effects in tangible visual terms that illustrate why color combinations work or
don’t work. While a basic understanding of the color wheel is useful, this class
will not present wheel based formulas such as many have heard of. A new
way of sorting color and seeing relationships becomes the basis for exploring
color through knitting. You will achieve a deeper understanding of color and
perception, and Laura promises you will never look at color in the same way
again. You will leave understanding Laura’s favorite axiom: You don’t get WOW
by doing the expected!
522-3 Intermediate Beyond the pattern: Knitting ‘Purls’ of Wisdom
Long before ‘cast on’ and even after ‘sew seams’ there are numerous details, tricks,
and techniques that can make knitting better looking but are never spelled out
in patterns. These are a dozen of my most essential ‘purls’ of wisdom for knitting
success—from winding a pull-skein by hand to wearing the garment out the door.
Each nugget of information can make knitting more enjoyable and produce more
professional results.
308-6 Intermediate Custom Fitting Existing Patterns Many patterns
are available, but often you want to change the neckline, lengthen the sleeves,
etc. Find out how to personalize the fit of a pattern for yourself or those you
knit for. See how small alterations can make a garment hang better. Learn easy
alternatives to drop shoulders. These simple refinements don’t require extensive
pattern re-writes but produce great results.
Note: This class does not cover extensive pattern sizing and fit alterations.
Saturday 8:30 am - 11:30 am
657-3 Intermediate Pinstriped Knitting Learn this quick and easy way
of creating complicated-looking fabric with slimming optical effects. Infuse other
colors for different “rhythms.” Make increasing, decreasing and counting stitches
simpler. Throw in some textures for an even-more-complex look.
395-3 No skills required Design Inspiration Have you ever wondered
where ideas come from Where do designers draw their inspiration from How do
they interpret their ideas into reality What problems arise What challenges are
posed What details do they specifically look for What special tools are involved
See the many examples of source and result in this show-and-tell lecture.
Sunday 8:30 am - 11:30 am
NEW 396-3 No skills required Draping a Pattern: a demonstration There
are many ways to draft an original pattern. Draping is one of them and is never
talked about nor covered in knitting. With commercial knit fabric, we will
construct garments on two volunteers and use this “mock up” as a basis for our
knitting. We will transpose the pieces onto gridded marker paper then plug
in our gauge and figure out areas of simplification. Motifs may be previewed,
stitch patterns “tried out,” and details tested. Most importantly, a personal and
customized fit will be ensured.
Sunday 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
507-3 Easy Tips and Tricks with Lily Learn Lily’s secrets to make your
knitting life easier: join a cast-on for circular knitting without adding twist, start a
new skein of yarn or a new color without losing the first stitch, attach knit pieces
as you work, work a circular bind-off on the neck where the beginning and end
are imperceptible, and weave in ends that are too short for a darning needle.
Leave class with lots of small ‘fix-its’ and a new eye for knitting details.
Cindy Craig
I learned to knit while chaperoning Girl Scouts in Norway. While in our hospitality home, I asked the mom
to teach me how to knit, and because I was pregnant with my first son, we started a baby sweater. She had
the back finished in two nights, and I was still on the ribbing! I have learned so much since then and now
spend my days managing Studio Knitting & Needlepoint, Kansas City, MO. I love helping people learn to knit
or crochet — especially, when they get stuck! I knit everywhere I go and am frequently questioned on the
sidelines of the soccer field and at PTA and Cub Scout meetings. I love to design and write patterns.
Since graduating with a degree in fashion knitwear design, in 1993, Fiona has been designing handknits professionally. Her work
is much sought after with sustained exposure in leading magazine publications, online at Twist Collective, and for yarn companies.
She has produced original concepts for major fashion houses in London, Paris, and New York. Fiona teaches hands-on workshops
at conferences and guild events and is an on-line instructor at Craftsy.com. She is the author of Inspired Cable Knits, Knitspiration
Journal, and Inspired Fair Isle Knits.
NEW
Thursday 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
926-3 Intermediate Twisting with the Cable Girl Fiona would like to
teach the whole world how to knit cables because she LOVES the technique! In
this workshop she will show you how to twist in a number of different ways, how
to read charts, and how to add cables to simple projects for stunning details.
This workshop is a must for newer knitters who love the look of texture or for
knitters who need a refresher with a twist.
134-6 Easy Tints, Tones and Knit Two (colors) Together Many
knitters find it difficult to choose colors. This class will show you how to put
color theory into practice, so that those scary sounding terms make sense. You
will look at color temperature, tonal value, complimentary and analogous color
schemes, along with many other terms. And once you get playing with color
you will see how the theory can be a helpful underpinning. In combination with
the color exercises, instruction will be given on the techniques used for working
with multi-colors—stripes, Fair Isle, intarsia, slip stitch, etc.
NEW
Friday 8:30 am - 11:30 am
233-3 Easy Creative Crochet Edgings for Knitters Certain styles of
garments look elegant with crocheted rather than handknit edgings. Just as ribbings
look great on Fair Isle sweaters, crochet edgings look fabulous on jackets, vests, and
tops. In this class, you will learn how to customize your handknits and give them a
contemporary look with beautiful crochet edgings worked directly onto the knit
fabric. Start by learning how to work a single crochet foundation row on horizontal
and vertical knitted edges. Then, learn several attractive edgings including picots
and backwards single crochet. Practice working buttonholes on edgings and bands.
Yes, knitters, YOU will master and learn to love beautiful, simple, crochet edgings.
Note: Participants must be proficient at working single crochet.
Friday 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
NEW 924-3 Intermediate Use Grafting to Fix Mistakes If you find a mistake
in your knitting, don’t immediately rip out rows and rows of your work to get back
to a boo-boo. Learn how to cut and remove a “mistake row”, then create the correct
stitches by grafting. Grafting is a sewing technique that creates a partial or full row
of stitches. Learn to cut, remove, and graft stitches in stockinette stitch, garter stitch,
1x1 rib, 2x2 rib, and seed stitch. Class discussion will include grafting other stitch
patterns.
Saturday 8:30 am - 11:30 am
225-3 Intermediate Advanced Seaming: Texture, Color, Pattern Do
you know how to seam stockinette stitch, but find other stitch patterns challenging
Learn how to apply the same techniques and principles to seaming textured
stitch patterns and colorwork. The key to seaming is understanding stitch pattern
structure and recognizing where to place the sewing needle. We will work with
two simple textured stitch patterns—garter stitch and seed stitch—to learn how
to identify “where to sew.” These two patterns are representative of many textured
patterns and by seaming them, you will understand many aspects of seaming
others. You will practice seaming vertical, horizontal, and horizontal-to-vertical
seams in garter stitch and seed stitch. Also, you will learn how to adjust textured
and colorwork stitch patterns so they match at the side-seams of a garment. Charts
and knitted samples will be used to examine the stitch patterns and determine
how to adjust them. The class includes a discussion of using selvedge stitches with
colorwork and textured stitch patterns. The last part of the class focuses on the
knitting and seaming techniques used for set-in sleeves. All of the steps for sewing
set-in sleeves will be reviewed, and you will practice seaming the diagonal section of
a set-in sleeve on seed stitch swatches.
Note: Must be able to sew vertical, horizontal, horizontal-to-vertical, and diagonal seams in stockinette stitch
and vertical seams in reverse stockinette stitch (or must have taken Superb Seams class). Must be able to identify
the structure of knit and purl stitches in handknits.
Jean Frost
Years of working in the garment industry sharpened Jean’s skills in knits and
designs. Her attention to designer fit details and to knitted fabric textures and
color delivers garments that have high interest and style. Jean now teaches,
knits and designs. She is the author of Jean Frost Jackets, Custom Knit Jackets
and her upcoming book, Stitches for Tailored Knits.
Thursday 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
634-3 Advanced Amazing Couture Stitches One of the unique
things about couture clothing is the fabric. In this class we will work with
some little-known knitted stitch patterns to produce amazing textures
using ordinary yarns. By manipulating the stitches and combining yarns
and colors, wonderful fabrics come to life. With these stitches, you can
turn a simple garment into a masterpiece.
NEW
Friday 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
131-3 Easy Knit It, Weave It Some people do not like to knit
‘fancy stitches’ or do color work. Perhaps just a break from a difficult
project is what is needed. Learn several ways of weaving to add color or
texture to plain stockinette or garter stitch fabric. We will use weaving
techniques to produce beautiful designs, stripes or plaids which can be
used as all over patterns or borders.
628-3 Advanced Chasing the Hounds Tooth, That Is
Follow the trends with graphic knits. The classic houndstooth is a series of
interlocking shapes that add style and dimension to any garment. Jean has
sought out over a dozen ways to execute this eye-catching stitch pattern.
Through samples, slides, and a bit of practice, see why this stitch should be
a part of your knitting repertoire.
Antje Gillingham
Antje Gillingham grew up in Germany and learned to knit at the age of eight. In 1982 she moved to the central coast
of California, where she lived for the next 17 years. When her husband’s job relocated the family to Tennessee, she
rediscovered her infatuation with fiber and all that is knitting. Antje is the author of three best-selling books and has
published patterns in several knitting magazines. Over the years, her travels have taken her all over the country, and
along the way she has made many new friends who all share the same passion for knitting. It is these wonderful, likeminded
souls who continue to inspire her to design, write and teach. When she isn’t traveling or teaching at a variety
of knitting workshops, she can be found relaxing at home...with knitting in hand.
407-3 Easy Fringed Modulation Yes! Another scarf! But a modular
scarf is not just “another” scarf. Join me in exploring one of the easiest yet most
dramatic looking knitting techniques I’ve come across! Within the three hours
of this class, you’ll be well on your way to knitting one of the most gorgeous
scarves ever! You’ll look at the oh-so-uneventful garter stitch in a new, loving
manner as you learn how to knit a patchwork of colors without ever picking up
a single stitch.
537-3 Intermediate A Fair Isle Cowl Fair Isle or Stranded Knitting is
the technique used to work patterns with multiple yarns and colors in a row or
round. There are several ways to work a Fair Isle pattern but we will specifically
explore holding a yarn in each hand and weaving in (tacking) the yarn floats
behind the pattern as we go along. Once conquered, this is one of the fastest
and smoothest ways to knit Fair Isle. The magic word to success: practice...
569-3 Intermediate Knitting Brioche...and Loving It If you look
up the definition of BRIOCHE, the online dictionaries will tell you that it is a
French yeast bread with a sweet flavor and light texture—it’s probably not the
explanation you were hunting for to describe the origins of this wonderfully soft
and stretchy form of ribbed knitting! In most cases, Brioche is worked in one
or two color combinations and combines slipped stitches with the traditional
knit/purl rib; some of you may know it as “Purl YO and stitch tog.” Sounds easy
enough, right The knitting begins after you understand the pattern phrasing.
explore the Brioche Stitch inside and out. Tips, tricks and practice will make it a
garter stitch. So often confined to the edge of the party, so seldom seen in anything
but the same old blocks or stripes. But not today! Today, garter stitch breaks out
into fully-fledged stranded color patterns, courtesy of an intriguing but little-known
technique called garter jacquard. We’ll work charted garter jacquard patterns both
flat and in the round.
Practice (Deluxe Edition) A hands-on introduction to the creation of tessellations:
motifs that interlock without gaps or overlaps. Tessellations are as old and pervasive as
design itself; they can be found in some of the most ancient examples of human craft,
and were famously used in the modern era by the artist M.C. Escher.
691-6 Intermediate Knitted Tessellations: Playful and Powerful Patterns in
In this class, we will begin by discussing the theories behind tessellating, and put into
practice the basic techniques for designing new tessellated patterns in hand-knitted
fabrics. In this expanded, six-hour edition we will also delve into eleven varieties of
symmetry, and use them to create striking, original new designs.
Note: Fluency in the basics of knitting in the round (or, if it is the student’s preference, speed-swatching or flat
stranded colorwork). Students are offered the choice of working in knit/purl texture patterns or in two-color
(stranded) knitting; those choosing the latter should be adept at it. A sense of humor, a taste for adventure, and
a reasonable ability to concentrate are strongly advised.
cutting of steeks (slashed openings in knit fabric) and the installation of zippers. These
techniques are famous for causing anxiety in the uninitiated.
Susanna Hansson
Susanna grew up in Sweden and learned to knit in the fifth grade, as did all young Swedish girls in the early 1960’s. She has been
an instrumental influence in the renaissance of interest in the unique patterned colorwork Bohus Stickning sweaters and her
collection of vintage garments was the centerpiece of a highly successful exhibit at the American Swedish Institute (ASI) in 2009.
In addition to teaching at all four STITCHES events, Susanna takes her workshops on the road to guilds, retreats, and shops in North
America, Scandinavia, Japan, and the UK. Her work is grounded in her love of technique, detail, history, and culture. She loves to
teach as much as she loves to knit! For more information about Susanna, please visit her website at www.oneofsusannas.com.
466-3 Easy Off the Cuff Are they accessories or jewelry Hard to say.
Either way, they knit up quickly, make great gifts and fun additions to a winter
wardrobe. And, if someone is cold, there is nothing more effective than keeping
the pulse points warm.
Basic knitting skills are required, but there’s nothing complicated about this
type of bead knitting. Learn an easy way to calculate how many beads to string
and then begin knitting the cuff with a provisional cast-on that will allow you to
complete it with a three-needle bind-off rather than having to sew it together.
578-3 Intermediate Great Beginnings Is there a perfect cast-on for
1x1 ribbing How do you cast on and create a picot edge at the same time When
might you want to remove your cast-on Knitters often learn only one way of
casting on. Different cast-ons create different edges and having several at your
fingertips will enhance your finished pieces. We build on the classic long-tail caston
and add several refinements, then move on to a crochet chain cast-on, ideal as
a provisional cast-on. A tubular cast-on, using Japanese waste yarn, is perfect for a
1x1 rib. Finally we will work a sweet picot cast-on, perfect for a baby garment. With
this class, your knitting will be off to a great start!
313-3 Intermediate Japanese Short Rows Short rows are an elegant
way to shape your knitting and are the perfect way to finish off shoulders and
build collars that lay flat. Japanese short rows are done without using the wrapand-turn.
will be a distant memory once you master this technique. Complete your short
rows with an elegant Japanese bind-off.
Judy Pascale
Judy Pascale, a native of Connecticut and a life long knitter, launched her career as a professional knitting instructor and
designer in the early 1990’s. She has professionally sold her unique knitwear under the name THE JUDITH COLLECTION both
privately and at juried shows. For several years she was employed at a yarn shop where she taught knitting classes and
assisted numerous customers with their knitting and finishing problems. She is now exclusively teaching knitting and design
classes with the emphasis on customizing desired fit. The second phase of Judy’s designer career combined knitting with
beads. Using a non-prestringing technique and textured stitches, she has designed classes from small projects to garments.
The most recent phase is wet felting. This ancient textile process remains vibrant and fascinating today. Either a Nuno scarf
to wear or a decorative table runner or bowl to decorate your home. Creativity is endless. Besides teaching for STITCHES, her
experience includes The National Needle Art Association (TNNA), Vogue Knitting Live (VK Live), The Knitting Guild of America
(TKGA) and yarn shops and guilds all over the country. Most importantly, Judy has joined the ranks of other talented members
of the knitting community whose explosive interest is creating a renaissance for the ageless art of knitting.
617-3 Advanced Challenging Stitches From Japanese Designs, Part 1
Many knitters are intrigued by the interesting stitchwork found in Japanese
hand-knitting designs. In this class, we’ll explore some charted stitches
which will surely be new to the experienced knitter. How are these stitches
challenging The chart may be hard to interpret (with composite symbols or
Japanese footnotes) or the execution of the stitch may be unusual. We’ll do
a quick review of Japanese stitch symbology, then swatch four or five stitch
patterns. Bring an adventuresome attitude!
Note: Students must be very comfortable knitting from charted stitch patterns. Some familiarity with
Japanese stitch symbology is useful but not required.
533-6 Advanced Understanding Japanese Knitting Patterns
The creative and often unusual work of Japanese designers can open up
another world of knitting for you. Even without a word of Japanese, an
experienced knitter can work from a Japanese pattern, once familiar with the
graphic format in which they’re presented. In the morning, we’ll learn how
to “read” a schematic, and how to find basic information such as size, gauge,
shaping, yarn requirements and needles. In the afternoon, we’ll focus on
the stitch symbology used in pattern charts, which are standard among all
Japanese publishers. We’ll also swatch a few stitch patterns of varying levels of
difficulty. Bring any Japanese patterns that you may have questions about.
Note: You must be very comfortable knitting from charts.
Saturday 8:30 am - 11:30 am and Saturday 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
635-6 Advanced Even More Challenging Stitches From Japanese
Designs Japanese hand-knitting patterns often use complex and
interesting stitch patterns. This class introduces patterns that present
unusual challenges in executing the stitch or deciphering the chart. We’ll
do a quick review of Japanese chart symbols, then you’ll swatch eight or
more pattern stitches.
Note: These patterns are not part of 617-3 Challenging Stitches. You MUST be comfortable knitting
from charts.
several garments in various stitch
511-3 Intermediate Turn Mistakes and Mishaps into Knowledge
and Experience
Mistakes — we all have made them. Some are very obvious
from the beginning; when your stitches accidentally fall off the needle, a single
or multi-row dropped stitch in stockinette stitch, garter stitch or seed; a knit
where you should have purled; a cable in the wrong direction, a lost yarn-over;
and more. Through practice in this class, you will be able to fix a list of common
mistakes possibly avoiding the need to start over or throw a garment away.
Some mistakes insidiously get noticed after the sweater is finished, because
there was more information to be learned in that swatch you unraveled. Know
the information which can help you avoid the problems of stretching or growing,
and/or shrinking. Think of that sweater you once made and choose to not wear.
This important class promises to arm you with the best information to prevent
and fix a variety of mishaps and disappointing results that appear immediately
or long after the garment is complete. Instead of consequences being your
teacher, this problem-ending class will arm you with techniques to turn you into a
confident, successful, target-oriented, and fearless knitter.
525-3 Easy Yarn Substitution Made Easy Master the mysteries of
yarn substitution! We’ll start with gauge, then discuss the various weights of
yarn (fingering to super bulky), weight/yardage/plies, and look at fiber and
yarn characteristics that affect substitution (e.g. drape, elasticity, weight, halo).
We will also consider color choice and buying quantities of the substitute yarn.
We’ll finish by walking through some real-life examples by selecting potential
substitute yarns for real patterns.
Note: Class focuses on how to substitute yarns the same weight/gauge as called for by the pattern and
does not include rewriting patterns to use a yarn with a different gauge.
Easy You should know the basics,
how to increase and decrease, and
have made at least one garment.
Intermediate You should have
worked with a few stitch patterns and
should be familiar with basic garment
Stacey Trock
Stacey has been bringing cuteness into the crochet-world with her adorable stuffed animals since 2008.
She is the author of Cuddly Crochet and Crocheted Softies and has self-published over 100 irresistibly cute
animal patterns through her website, FreshStitches. Stacey firmly believes that there’s no ‘right way’
to crochet and enthusiastically experiments with a variety of techniques (even less-popular ones!) to
achieve the desired finished product. This philosophy spills over into her teaching style: she encourages
students to discover what works best for their own crocheting style for maximum crochet enjoyment!
837-3 Easy Techniques for Crochet Colorwork Have you been befuddled by
a project that requires you to use multiple colors of yarn Should you carry the unused
color across or start a new ball Decisions, decisions! In this class, we’ll investigate the
advantages to various techniques for handling color changes: stranding, ‘crocheting
over’, and intarsia. We’ll also compare working in the round vs. working in rows. You’ll
learn to read color charts and get tips for keeping your color changes tidy.
Saturday 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
835-3 Easy Troubleshooting and Pattern Reading for Crocheters Have
you learned to crochet from a friend… and feel like you ‘know how to crochet’, but feel
like you ‘don’t get’ patterns Or are you having trouble managing your hook Fret no
more! This class is designed to polish up your basic crochet skills. We’ll discuss some
common stumbling blocks in crocheting techniques: like your loop falling off your
hook, splitting your stitches, how to select a hook and yarn that’s right for you, and
then cover the basics of reading a pattern and variations in pattern-writing styles. In
no time, you’ll be crocheting with ease and feel confident picking up a new book to
cuddly, they’re fantastic crochet projects because they don’t take long to make and
they don’t need to fit anybody! Plus, once you know some basic techniques, you’ll be
able to tackle almost any animal pattern that’s out there... what could be better This
class will cover selecting yarn and appropriate hook size, how to do a sorta-gauge
swatch (no measuring required!), how to begin working in the round, a refresher on
crochet pattern variations you may encounter, techniques for attaching pieces, on
child-safety, and tips for stuffing. We’ll crochet a super-adorable ladybug, which will
teach you the variety of basic techniques you’ll need. By the end of this class, you’ll not
need to be scary! In this class, you’ll learn the tips and tricks for using double-point
needles, which are very handy for knitting small pieces in the round (such as thumbs
of mittens, socks, and tops of hats). You may even end up LIKING them! We’ll knit a
miniature hat in the course of this class. You’ll learn to cast on over multiple double
points, rearrange your stitches, and prevent laddering (those ugly gaps that happen in
between needles). We’ll also discuss how to know how many needles to use, talk about
reading patterns with double points, and review tips for making sure your stitches stay
Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton
Since there are painters and crafters on both sides of her family, it is not strange that Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton has applied her
talent in combining colors and structure to designing handknits. Hamilton’s artistic endeavors began in her childhood, and she
started selling her creations in her mid-teens. A true multi-crafter, she is proficient at embroidery, macramé and crochet but finally
settled on handknitting at the age of 22. Her knitting career started in New York where she developed her talent during the
early 80’s. There she designed for the knitting magazines and a private clientele as well as sold her handknits to better boutiques
in Manhattan. The high point of her time in NY was a handknit collection under her own label that was sold to select boutiques in
20 states from Florida to Alaska.
The move over the Atlantic to Mariefred, Sweden gave her the peace and harmony to raise a family and develop her business and
artistic creativity even further. Cornelia has written numerous articles on Swedish knitters and knitting for the American market
and has 13 pattern books to her name, including Noro: Meet the Man published by Soho Publishing in the fall of 2009. Her latest
design collection, Reflections, features the Poems Collection from Universal Yarn. With her sons grown, she now divides her time
between Mariefred and Atlanta designing and developing her own yarn line, Heaven’s Hand.
Andrea Wong
Andrea has been teaching the Portuguese Style of Knitting for 8 years in the United States and
abroad. She was born and raised in South America where she learned and practiced the technique.
She has published 3 DVDs on the subject and self-published a book called The Portuguese Style of
502-3 Easy Portuguese Style of Knitting During this workshop, knitters
will have the opportunity to learn and practice the style of knitting which is in
Greece, Portugal, Egypt, and Turkey. The main characteristic is that the yarn is
either wrapped behind the neck or looped through a pin attached to the shoulder
in order to maintain a constant tension. Advantages of knitting Portuguese style
include: it’s faster than either the American or Continental styles, it requires less
hand movement — great for those suffering from Arthritis or Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome and it helps maintain constant tension even for beginners. Blind
knitters are overjoyed because they always know where the yarn is — the yarn is
never dropped.
NEW 567-6 Intermediate Two-color Knitting: Portuguese Style The
Portuguese style of knitting makes the purl stitch very easy. For this reason, when
knitting circularly I prefer to knit garments inside out. This technique makes twocolor
knitting very smooth: where the two colors of yarn do not tangle and the
tension of the fabric is very even. In this class we are going to learn all the basics
of this style of knitting and then make a two-color knitting hat, learning the basics
skills for many knitting projects: Fair Isle, double knitting and Bohus knitting.
Daniel Yuhas
Daniel Yuhas learned to knit as a college kid nearly 20 years ago, and the obsession has grown ever
since. He believes that knitting is fundamentally good for the universe — every stitch we knit is an
act of creativity, and loves it when his role as a teacher is to encourage that spark of creativity in his
students. Daniel’s first book, Knitting from the Center Out, came out in the Fall of 2012. Daniel lives
and knits in Portland, Oregon.
found anywhere. How will you make socks In this class we’ll learn to use single-strand
double-knitting to knit a pair of socks seamlessly, toe-up, and in the round—using
straight needles and our wits. The result looks identical to a sock knit circularly, but the
bragging rights are beyond compare.
393-3 Intermediate Design Your Own Pi Shawl The Pi Shawl is a great
project for exploring center-out and lace knitting. Described by its un-nventor
Elizabeth Zimmerman as having “absolutely no pattern,” the simple shaping of the Pi
Shawl makes it supremely easy to customize your garment as you go to your heart’s
delight. In this workshop, we’ll learn the architecture of the Pi Shawl, and pick out a
lace pattern or two, then cast on and get knitting. We’ll learn the disappearing loop
cast-on technique and magic loop method for working in the round. Class handouts
will include several examples of lace patterns that work well with the Pi Shawl’s
465-3 Intermediate Revolutionary Knitting Knitting from the center out
is a ‘revolutionary old technique’ for making just about anything. Working on doublepointed
needles and beginning with just a few stitches, our work will grow outwards
with each spin around the needles. In this class we’ll learn the disappearing loop
cast-on and knit a beautiful pinwheel pattern. What you begin in class could become a
is yours!
NEW 925-3 Easy I-cord Wonders Put simply, I-cord is a rope-like tube of knitting
made without turning the needles. But we can use it to make so much more than just
overgrown string. In this class we’ll learn to “knit” I-cord on our fingers, then how to
knit it with needles, and how to use it as a cast-on, selvage, or bind-off. And we’ll leave
plenty of time for play and discovery as we explore the wonderful, freeing, and easyto-create
shapes we can make with this unassuming knitted tube.
knitting, spinning or weaving will be
at your side as you learn new skills
and gain confidence.
You’ll have time — not just to hear
the words and try the techniques, but
to create a plan, and to do it yourself!
And, to make attending even more
convenient, the two day event has
been moved to begin on Sunday
and conclude on Monday (rather than
Monday and Tuesday as in the past).
This will give you an opportunity to
shop the STITCHES Market during
your lunch break on Sunday. Then
on Monday we will enjoy a quiet
lunch together.
Candace Eisner Strick
Candace Eisner Strick has immersed herself in music and knitting most of her life. Now retired
from 16 years of teaching cello, she concentrates on designing, writing, and teaching knitting.
Her newest book, Strick-ly Socks, features a revolutionary and amazingly simple way of
knitting socks. She is the author of 6 other books, has been published in numerous magazines,
and has taught nationally and internationally since 1998. She is the creator of her own line
of yarn, Merging Colors, and her own line of patterns under the name of Strickwear (www.
strickwear.com). Candace’s students say they not only love learning from her classes, but
thoroughly enjoy her sense of humor as well. Appropriately, “strick” means to knit.
Strickmuster: The Beautiful Twisted
Stitch Patterns of Austria
Sunday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm & Monday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
ETC Advanced
These gorgeous patterns wind and twist around each other in
complicated and intricate designs, but actually are done using
only two basic techniques — without the use of a cable needle.
We will sample some of the 174 charming patterns from Maria
Erlbacher’s book, Strickmuster and learn how to read the unique
yet logical charts. Each person will then choose and start a
project. Projects can range from wrist warmers to mittens, socks
or a hat. There will be charts and directions for all projects, which
you can either use as is or modify in any way you wish.
ETC Intermediate
In this intensive, two-day exploration of knitted lace, we’ll discuss
(and practice) each aspect of its creation, including: the history of
lace knitting and its development in different times and places,
the choice of materials, the structure of knitted lace fabric, the
creation of stitch motifs, and methods for planning new designs.
If you have enjoyed working from lace patterns but only dreamed
of creating your own, or if you love lace and would like to
understand what lies beneath the pretty surface, Lace Unlocked
is for you.
Note: This is not a learn-to-knit-lace class; students must be fluent in lace knitting,
including reading and working from lace charts.
Deborah Jarchow
After many years of teaching knitting and crochet, Deborah discovered weaving in 1996, and her
love of fiber, texture, and color came together. Since then she has worked full time as a weaver and
artist, including teaching fiber arts, creating and selling wearable art, giving lectures, and showing in
local, regional, and national exhibits. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and museums across
the country, and she has won numerous awards and written articles for national publications. Her
work has been commissioned by churches and is in many private collections. Since 2004 she has
been an artist in residence, teacher, and weaver at Studio Channel Islands Art Center in Camarillo, CA.
Deborah loves helping knitters discover the joy of weaving. Her class Rigid Heddle Weaving Beyond
the Basics is now available on Craftsy.com
ETC No skills required
Go beyond the basics and weave more than plain weave on
your rigid heddle loom. Let Deborah show you how to create
decorative designs and textures in the structure of your woven
fabric. Spend two days immersed in the joy of weaving with
pick-up sticks, learning to make additional sheds and manipulate
your warp threads. Discover the difference between warp and
weft floats and how to use them to create your desired patterns
in a sampler. Try out lace patterns, honeycomb, waffle weave,
and more.
After learning a variety of patterns, see how the right finishing
techniques really make your patterns pop! This sampler will be
your basis for planning many beautiful future textiles. While
weaving the sampler, students will learn various methods for
finishing the ends, how to wet finish the woven pieces, and
many tips for easier weaving. After you finish your sampler
Deborah will walk you through planning future projects based
on the patterns you like best.
Note: Students must be familiar with the rigid heddle loom and have taken a
beginning rigid heddle weaving class or equivalent.
Janel Laidman
Janel Laidman is the author of The Enchanted Sole; Legendary Socks for Adventurous Knitters and
an upcoming new stitch dictionary, The Encyclopedia Knitannica and has contributed articles and
patterns for magazines and books. She runs the designer sock club, the Knitterati, for those who
love socks and mystery. Janel is lucky enough to teach both knitting and spinning nationally and
occasionally internationally. She lives in a fiber-filled modern cottage in Eugene, Oregon, where
she apparently takes every opportunity to feed the deer her precious tulips. When she’s not shooing
away nibbling deer, Janel enjoys making clothing for feet out of little loops of yarn, hiking, bread
baking and yarn making. She was amazed when she recently discovered that she has written over
70 sock patterns! You can usually find her blogging and working away at her books and clubs at
Color Tricks in Spinning
Sunday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm & Monday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
ETC Intermediate
Learn to control the color changes in your spinning to get just
the effect you want—stripes, no stripes, short stripes, long
stripes! We’ll make a gradient yarn, a fractal stripe, and lots more
tricks. We’ll also learn how to card fibers to produce particular
color effects. Learn to tone down a fiber that’s too bright, which
colors to blend to get that perfect green, or how to make your
colors pop.
Note: Students should be familiar with their wheel and be able to spin a
continuous thread. Can be done on a spindle but students may not spin enough to
see the effects.
Judy Pascale
Judy Pascale, a native of Connecticut and a life-long knitter, launched her career as a professional
knitting instructor and designer in the early 1990’s. She has professionally sold her unique knitwear
under the name The Judith Collection both privately and at juried shows. For several years she was
employed at a yarn shop where she taught knitting classes and assisted numerous customers with
their knitting and finishing problems. She is now exclusively teaching knitting and design classes
with the emphasis on customizing desired fit. The second phase of Judy’s design career combined
knitting with beads. Using a non-prestringing technique and textured stitches, she has designed
classes from small projects to garments. Her most recent phase is wet felting. This ancient textile
process remains vibrant and fascinating today. Besides teaching for STITCHES, her experience
includes The National Needle Art Association (TNNA), Vogue Knitting Live (VK Live), The Knitting
Guild of America (TKGA) and yarn shops and guilds all over the country. Most importantly, Judy has
joined the ranks of other talented members of the knitting community whose explosive interest is
creating a renaissance for the ageless art of knitting.
Felting Meets Lace
Sunday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm & Monday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
ETC Intermediate
This two day class allows you ample opportunity
to pursue a combination of two ancient crafts that
produces a beautiful contemporary scarf.
The first of these crafts is felting. Felt itself is one of
the worlds oldest textiles created from wool roving.
You will be using an updated technique called Nuno
felting. With this process you will layer high quality
wool onto a hand-dyed silk fabric—both available
in a wide selection of colors. The result is a soft,
lightweight fabric with a crinkled texture.
Next you will create a knitted lace border that
will complement the Nuno felted portion of the
scarf both in weight and color. Using a short row
technique, the scarf will follow a crescent shape that
drapes beautifully.
Lace knitting and Nuno felting when effectively paired together
are the perfect partners to create a one-of-a kind fashionable
accent scarf for you!
