Braunschweig, February xx, 2004
As part of a large-scale modernization program to modernize its train control system
for five Paris Metro lines, the Paris mass transit operator RATP has awarded an order
to Siemens Transportation Systems (TS). Under this order Siemens is to equip Metro
Lines 3, 5, 9, 10 and 12 with ultramodern train control and route protection systems,
thus reaffirming the leading role it plays in the field of mass transit automation.
Siemens will supply not only the technology for transmitting data between the trackside and
on-board equipment for all five lines, but also the on-board equipment for the trains on Lines
3, 10 and 12 (117 metro cars Type MF67) and the trackside equipment for Line 5 and Line 9
(34.2 kilometers).
This technology is founded on the communication-based train control (CBTC) system already
being installed by Siemens on Paris Metro Line 14, New York Subway’s Canarsie Line and
Line 9 in Barcelona. RATP is equipping its Metro Lines 3, 5, 9, 10 and 12 with an essential
component of that system: namely, spread spectrum radio, which Siemens is also supplying
for the metro lines in New York and Barcelona.
CBTC fulfills the RATP requirements for interoperability, thus enabling trains equipped with
Siemens automation technology to also run on lines that are provided with equipment from
other suppliers and vice versa.
This modernization work is to commence at the end of March 2004 and will not disrupt metro
service. The new systems are due to enter operation between 2007 and 2009, starting with
Line 3 and finishing with Line 5.
